autism101,

Most of the time when asked “How are you doing?” I actually tell them, because I forget I’m supposed to always say, “I’m fine” even if I’m not.

You think as an older adult I would have learned by now…but nope.

Do you?

@actuallyautistic

Polychrome,

@autism101 @actuallyautistic first I didn't know better.

Now I do.

Still no intention to stop~

@autism101 @actuallyautistic I tend to do the same, especially if I am under the weather and consider the person asking to be a friend. I have even stopped myself mid sentence and said, oh, you're not concerned, you're just a fine collector! Sometimes it gets a laugh, for the play on words.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic I know the feeling. Nowadays, if someone asks me how I am, I say, "Hello," and go on.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic I do not understand the ritual of asking questions you don’t want to know the answer to as a form of greeting. Why not just say hey/hello/hi and keep walking?!?! Also don’t get “Good Morning!!” all fake cheerful. It feels like a command that I should APPEAR to feel it’s a good morning. I usually just respond with “Morning” and keep moving.

@modgalfri @autism101 @actuallyautistic
I'm neurotypical so let me know if replying here is not okay.

This seems particularly common in America. I'm not American and when I visit I often get nonplussed by everyone always greeting me and starting small talk at every opportunity. There's even people in the supermarket entrance whose job seems to be to just say hello to me.

As a foreigner I never really know what the right response is.

@jannem @modgalfri @autism101 @actuallyautistic Yeah their job title is literally "Greeter". SMH Sure, I'd love to talk to a perfect stranger, thanks.

@hosford42 @jannem @modgalfri @autism101 @actuallyautistic I hate this so much, I'm so glad it doesn't happen much in the UK. Whenever it happens to me I stop dead and stare at the person...am I meant to respond? How do I respond? Do they know me and I don't recognise them? One of my jobs tried to make me do this job and it made me so stressed that I'd cry in the toilets my whole lunch break

@jannem @modgalfri @autism101 @actuallyautistic fwiw, that "greeter" is part of the "loss prevention" (security) department. Research has shown that if people think they've been "seen" they're less likely to shoplift. So those old people at the front door are there to keep people from stealing stuff. They don't really expect a response at all. They just want you to know you've been seen.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic I play it safe by saying, “Ok, and you?”

[Technically, I am ok; I’m up & in motion.]

The question feels intrusive to me, particularly since no one really cares about my answer.

To be honest, I’m not interested in their answer, either, or I would’ve asked first.
🤷🏽‍♀️

@n69n @autism101 @actuallyautistic I agree lol I don't care how people are and nobody cares how I am. I answer every time with 'I'm fine' because those are the rules. If I'm actually alright I'll say 'I'm alive', which apparently gives the impression I'm not alright 🤷‍♀️if I actually want to know how someone is ill ask if they are alright. "How are you?" to me is a flippant everyday bs 'courtesy'

@nerdycrab @n69n @autism101 @actuallyautistic I’ve started asking, when I’m just not up to guessing, if they want to really know or not really asking.

@nerdycrab@mastodon.social avatar

@Honmedblommorna @n69n @autism101 @actuallyautistic in my experience they never want to know so I just say I'm fine, that's literally all they want to hear. I experimented with "I'm good thanks" because I heard colleagues say it, but that sounds like too much of a lie lol if I say I'm fine, it's like...I'm not good but I'm not bad, it's close enough to reality to be able to say with a normal tone 🤷‍♀️
