autism101,

Autism and Sensory Issues:

Our microwave oven is a sensory nightmare for me. I always try to stop it before it reaches zero and begins beeping. I get extremely anxious over this.

What do you avoid?

@autism101 @actuallyautistic i would do that with ours, but it still emits an annoying beep when you hit stop. So... no matter what I get beeped at, and i have to be closer to the beep if i hit stop.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic pointy objects directed towards me and quick movements. I guess it is connected with my vision impairment. Sometimes even a bottle on a table next to me is enough.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic haha I don’t even recall the last time I tried to boil water in the kettle and let it finish. Like the microwave it’s always a race to turn it off before it officially says it’s done.

ActuallyAutistic,
@ActuallyAutistic@autistics.life avatar

@autism101 @actuallyautistic I usually do this too so I can avoid the beeping as well.

I realize you asked for other things we avoid but I can't not comment on the weirdness that appliance beepers aren't volume-programmable including off. It would be a far better use for the "soften frozen ice cream" button or whatever.

Regarding things we avoid, my spouse is wet-touch avoidant, so for them,
everything that falls under that category? I dissociate at the drop of a hat, so I don't avoid much. Especially if someone needs something done. That may not be a good trait?

@autism101 @actuallyautistic We have this which can be muted. https://www.breville.com/us/en/products/microwaves/bmo870.html It looks like their regular microwave oven have that too.

@johne @actuallyautistic @autism101 Thank you! This may be exactly what I was looking for!

@minxdragon @actuallyautistic @autism101 Two cautions, the included pan for air frying is teflon coated. Using it as a toaster makes very uneven toast. We ended up getting a basic toaster that sits next to this. Otherwise, this thing is great.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic It still makes a noise when I click the button before it goes off! Not as loud a beeping but would still be nice to turn off the sound completely

@autism101 @actuallyautistic You've got good taste; IMHO Panasonic makes the best microwaves.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic 💀 Had to show this to my husband so we could have a good laugh. He does not understand why I must stop it before it beeps! But he does it too, for me. ♥️♥️♥️

Also watch videos without sound, play games without sound, and cannot stand my stupid car turn-signal blinker noise.

I've opened a cheap one up that didn't have a muting option. Found the beeper component and clipped the leads.

Rental house, but no one notices when the beep is absent.

Obviously gotta unplug and know which things would throw you through a wall if touched. Look up capacitors and avoid those.

Yes you can turn them off in the UI, but they reset when there's a power outage. In a rural house it could mean doing it several times a day.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic Be a dear and test this for all of us ppl? I hate the sound, too.

Microwave Silent Mode Exists—Here's How to Activate It

@servelan @autism101 @actuallyautistic The number one feature I looked for in a new microwave was a mute button

servelan,
@servelan@newsie.social avatar

@jake @autism101 @actuallyautistic We should get manufacturers to offer one if they don't.

Beeping kitchen appliances are very bad for me too, but the worst ist metal scraping on metal. My mom always scraped the food with metal spoons out of pots, it was like torture. The first thing I bought my partner after we got together was therefore a silicone spatula. 😁

thoralf,
@thoralf@soc.umrath.net avatar

@autism101 @actuallyautistic Not sure if that might help: set the timer to 30 seconds extra and you got more time to react without risking to hear the sound.

I have made my Honda totally silent. Watch me trigger people by leaving the lights on or opening the door with the keys in the ignition...:)

Very weird to get in a rental now.

@PricklyHeart @joshsummer @autism101 @actuallyautistic How?? I'd love to be able to reverse the car without it also automatically engaging EXTRA STRESS ANNOY MODE.

There's a beeper and there's a thing that makes it beep.

Bathroom fans. I am actively seeking one that works and is actually quiet. (Advice please).

And dentists. Drills. The sound my husband makes scraping his calloused feet with some kind of file.

ScottSoCal,

@Adventurer

If you ever find a bathroom exhaust fan that's quiet, that doesn't make a horrible rattling/whirring/vacuum cleaner noise, post it far and wide. I'll buy 3.

The motors often need oiling and the blades need cleaning.

After that, the cases are often just shoved in and are misaligned.

@HaelusNovak @autism101 @actuallyautistic Testing and changing the battery on smoke detectors. The horror!

PossiblyAutistic,

@undefined_variable @HaelusNovak @autism101 @actuallyautistic A company does this once per year here 😄

I was actually testing the smoke detector when I left my Bialetti coffee maker on the stove and joined an online meeting (planning to go back after a few minutes to get the coffee, and then forgetting) ...

Tarrenvane,

@undefined_variable @HaelusNovak @autism101 @actuallyautistic I hate smoke-detectors with a major passion! At least the standard ones anyway. Like, I know they're necessary, but they actually only succeed in freezing me up.
