aksdb,

told me that I should be able to come to work when I was able to play World of Warcraft

From your name I assume you are German. In that case your employer could suck it, even if you played on Monday. You can do whatever the fuck you want if it doesn’t conflict with you getting better. So if the doctor advises to stay in bed and sleep and you run around town for fun you could rightfully get in trouble. But if you have a broken leg you might not be fit for (your particular) work but could of course still play computer games. If you are on sick leave for mental problems you could even go on vacation because that might even benefit your mental health.

Hauptsache man muss nix ändern.

aksdb,

So you don’t schedule any doctor appointments and never buy tickets to concerts or other events in the future? Huh…

aksdb,

In Germany for specialists it’s quite normal.

My dermatologist only makes appointments 3 to 6 months in advance. Same with my pulmonologist. I heard psychologist appointments are often enough between one and two years in advance (if you want to start a new therapy).

Vacation is another such thing. Some employers require you to plan your vacation time at the beginning of the year so they don’t end up with a whole department being gone at the same time. Of course I need to factor that into my calender then so I don’t put other appointments/promises in there.

Weddings and large birthday parties are also often announced and planned far ahead. I need to block that in my calender as well.

And so on.

aksdb,

Schon gar keine extremen Ausnahmen.

aksdb,

Nice idea, but then everytime a video that contains anything licensed by the content mafia is uploaded (even partly), the user in question breaks that license opening themselves up to lawsuits.

In a perfect world where only properly free content is shared that model would work. But that is not how most content shared on YouTube looks like.

aksdb,

That is essentially how bittorrent works anyway. In Germany people lost in court over this. Also portions of a copyrighted file are a problem. If they can “proof” that they got a relevant portion (more than the typical fair use seconds) you are still on the hook.

aksdb,

That could help, but if a file is not shared that much (yet) or not many people are online at the moment, a single peer will still share many more parts, likely ending up with having shared significant amounts.

aksdb,

I wish there is a github FOSS script that does this for new windows builds.

FDP-Politikerin gibt Studierenden Tipps: Lifehacks gegen Armut (taz.de) German

aksdb,

I would love to upgrade to one, but from tests I gathered that they have an exceedingly bad idle power draw. Given that the card would idle most of the time, I don’t really want to waste power on it if nvidia and amd manage to stay far lower.

aksdb,

They also have different processes. Each report would start as a support request that goes through some customer care department or even call center first, that will triage the issue with some knowledge base or decision tree. So before a meaningful report makes it way to a department that can actually deal with it, a dozen other people are involved first.

aksdb,

It’s a double edged sword. If the actual devs are exposed too much, they get bombarded with shit from so many people who have no clue and/or just want to vent, that they would not be able to do their actual work or would even burn out from all the toxicity.

Unfortunately people with actual helpful input are so rare that it’s likely not worth the hassle.

Would be cool though if the people triaging reports would have the knowledge to sort the wheat from the chaff. But same problem there: it’s likely so rare to encounter these reports that it’s not worth training people for it.

aksdb,

I got fed up with this shit and invested a bit of time into getting a working Premium Family plan through a cheap country (Ukraine is about $4 per month). I invited my whole family (parents included) so essentially 6 people have an ad-free YouTube now for less than $1 each (per month). I assume that’s still less than what they have gotten by serving us a shit ton of ads. And I am rid of that cat and mouse game for a while.

aksdb,

As others said: VPN. Ukraine seems to work good currently, since the Credit Card address isn’t validated. Cheaper countries like India or Turkey now check if the CC you use is from that country. That is a bit more complicated to pull off, so that wasn’t worth it for me.

aksdb,

For the service they offer (the hosting basically) I am actually willing to pay quite a bit. But what they typically ask for (about €15 for a single account) that’s just not worth it, given that YouTube isn’t the producer of the content they serve. Music might be a bit more complicated thanks to the fucking idiotic way how licensing around that works. Anyway: nothing of that excuses the excessive use of ads they serve nowadays.

aksdb,

You can easily turn it into a “pubic display” once it’s set up.

aksdb,

Why though? I daily-drive it on multiple machines. The native encryption and ZFSBootMenu make it an awesome root fs. And incredibly easy to use with the way it handles mount points.

aksdb,

If it was real, the walls would be glass and there would be spectators.

aksdb,

But why? If you don’t need moving parts, don’t use moving parts. Simplicity is king.

aksdb,

IDEA isn’t Java-only. Most of the other languages are available as plugins. IDEA is typically the go-to IDE for multilanguage projects.

aksdb,

clion is also strictly separated.

aksdb,

I have a few projects where parts are Java, parts are Go and parts are C. Having that in a single workspace can be convenient.

Until it happens to befall a depressed or suicidal person who just goes “fuck it” and let’s it catch up. What then? The curse cannot be passed on so it’s essentially just over forever, right?

OSS Notetaking App: Notesnook (notesnook.com)

Just wanted to share my experience with notesnook as a daily note taking and information organizer app. The free tier is fairly barebones but you can use it for simple stuff, but I’ll say that the paid $50 per year tier is really nice. I’m surprised at the polish and feature set for a OSS project from 2019 but it’s also...

aksdb,

Notesnook locked my session every other week requiring me to authenticate again. But it doesn’t even do this like every other app out there, it first asks for the TOTP code and then for the password. So reverse from how password managers work, requiring a lot of manual back and forth.

So quickly writing a thought down sends me into a chain of context switches and completely disrupts me.

I gave up after a while. Happened on all my devices too, so it wasn’t a weird setup either.

aksdb,

For a bit of templating? Yes! What drives response times up is typically the database or some RPC, both of which are out of control of PHP, so I assume these were not factored in (because PHP can’t win anything there in a comparison).

aksdb,

Anything under like 100ms load is instant to the user, especially a page load.

True, but it accumulates. Every ms I save on templating I can “waste” on I/O, DB, upstream service calls, etc.

aksdb,

If you run it in old-school CGI mode, no, because each request would spawn a new process. But that’s nowhere near state-of-the-art. So typically you would still have a long-running process somewhere that could manage a connection pool. No idea if it does, though. Can’t imagine that it wouldn’t, however, since PHP would be slaughtered in benchmarks if there was no way to keep connections (or pools) open across requests.

Urteil des EuGH: Erste Kopie der Patientenakte ist kostenlos (www.tagesschau.de) German

aksdb,

What should I expect then?

aksdb,

LP is probably very audit-friendly … (in regards to its stored data).

What is the best linux alternative to OneNote?

I’ve no problem with using LibreOffice for most of my document needs, but i haven’t found a good substitute for microsoft’s OneNote yet. I mainly use it to plan my RPG games and it helps a lot. What alternatives are there for organizing notes on linux, with similar features to those that OneNote provides?

aksdb,

Notesnook required me to re-login every week or so. I paid for it in the beginning but after that kept happening over and over (it was fixed for a while and then regressed) I just gave up. If I need to quickly write something down I don’t want to context-switch into my password manager first. Especially since auto-complete wouldn’t help me, since for whatever fucked up reason Notesnook first asks for the TOTP token and THEN for the password.

aksdb,

I may be wrong, but I think the mask is just oxygen. What puts you under is the stuff they inject you.

I also heard (and used) it as a mix of both: “the last 20% take as long as the first 80%”

Ich tippe auf “zu faul”.

aksdb,

Ist das nicht aber genau der Aufhänger? Dass man eben keine invasive Darmspiegelung braucht? Das empfinde ich schon als Gewinn.

aksdb,

The lavage introduced an instant and substantial change to the intestinal microbiota. The total microbial load was decreased by 31-fold and 22% of the participants lost the subject-specificity of their microbiota.

I always love the many little implications of this genius “everything is a file”-architecture. Thank you Ken Thompson.

aksdb,

You do your name justice and all and I know (well, hope) you are exaggerating, but I wouldn’t wish any physical harm (especially sickness) on others.

That aside: I hope both fail horribly, lose their jobs and enough money to sink into a meaningless life where they are forgotten.

Then convert better next time! (/s)

aksdb,

And the ads in Steam are from its own store. So it helps with discoverability. Seeing some fucking razor blade ad before watching some firefigther documentation is just completely unrelated. Plus: I can’t buy razor blades on youtube. It’s a fucking video streaming platform. When Steam shows me new games, it’s at least something I would actually do on Steam.
