And stats really should be a mainline math class in high school. It comes up in so many places, and is far too often simplified away into a binary black & white choice.
Any time something happens that was predicted to be less than 50% likely, people lose their shit. For instance, when it unexpectedly rains or the wrong person wins an election.
But it’s not even being able to run the numbers or understanding statistical significance. It’s much more basic, just understanding that probabilities and uncertainty exist and are everywhere. My favorite example is when going to the doctor. They explain that whatever you have is probably X or Y, with a small chance of Z, but Y has been going around a lot and is easy to treat, so let’s try medication A for it. Then when that gets reported to friends and family afterwards, it’s “she said I have Y and I need A to fix it.”
Life seems like the result of such an unlikely complex Rube Goldberg machine where everything was just right to let life start then survive for a very long time. Plus we are made of various elements that had to be created in some of the universe’s biggest explosions.
It seems then that life should be something to be cherished while we briefly have it. I try to do just that.
…then we get to watch people around the world working hard to make life worse for those around them.
I had an abscess under a tooth many years ago, and the only thing that helped the pain was to chew ice and pack the resulting slush in between the gums and cheek where that tooth was.
It wouldn’t do anything for a minute, then suddenly the pain would just turn off. It was great.
I haven’t played VR for a couple years, but I played hundreds of hours of it in the 2018-2020 time frame. It has a long way to go but it’s already amazing too.
When I played, it was much more “drop me in another world” than the more visceral racing type stuff. I did love some vehicle based games like Ultrawings, but most of my time was in Skyrim and No Man’s Sky.
However, I have recently been on a racing game kick. I skip over the management and tuning stuff to just get to the driving because that’s what I’m looking for. Having a sim rig like yours that adds physical sensations to VR driving sounds pretty sweet. Maybe in another year or two when it’s time for me to get the hot new headset and dive back in to VR, I’ll have to think about the racing sim setup.
Btw I used a Samsung Odyssey, which is WMR, but via Steam VR. Had very good experiences. The displays seemed great for the time.

Something being fiction is no reason to throw expectations and consistency out the window.
It’s not that there is a wheelchair in a fantasy setting. It’s that the setting is typical high fantasy that may have magic but is otherwise very low tech. But then you have this out of place modern wheelchair made from a steel tube frame.
It’s like if the bard and the paladin disagree any some fact, then the paladin put down his shield and mace just to pull out his fucking iPhone to show that he was right all along.
I thought that too, but then I saw their weapons are literally sticks, lol. There’s a fancy one with a rock tied to the end.
The bald guy looks to have some armor though. But armor (or sword) hammered out by a blacksmith is still quite different than a welded tube frame with all straight lines and right angles.
There’s also the episode where the three Ferengi go back in time to (I think) the Roswell incident in mid 20th century USA.
Quark is repeatedly appalled at the stuff the hu-mons are doing to hurt themselves and destroy the planet. Smoking and testing nuclear fission bombs come to mind.
They must be going for the mainstream audience that just knows printers suck. That, and anybody who knows enough to see how funny that sentence is, has already sworn off HP forever.
I am absolutely looking forward to it! I have been enjoying this rewatch much more than I remember liking the show years ago.
I’m at this sweet spot where I know the broad strokes but don’t remember all the details because it’s been a long time. I can anticipate stuff and see pieces falling into place, but I still get surprises here and there.
I just watched this episode a couple days ago. Some of it is way too applicable to current day, particularly the part about how it takes a huge tragedy for the population to realize that maybe we should make society nice for other people.
Yeah there’s there tragic undertone to the whole thing as well. It showed the underclass actually standing up for themselves rather than fighting to keep inequality in place.
I have set both short and long swipe right to be upvote in my favorite clients (Memmy, Voyager). That way I can rapid fire the upvotes on a discussion I like.
If I feel compelled to get off my ass and downvote something, it’s always two clicks away in the menu.
My guess is yes. Many consider it the best Star Trek. I think I agree and I’m not even to the best parts yet.
The general look & feel of it is closest to TNG, if you’ve seen much of that. It’s not as campy as the original, but you get a few moments of “look at that actor on that obvious sound stage set pretending to be an alien, lol” moments. But DS9 has more long plot arcs. I am loving the cast of characters more than I remember too.
Voyager is the only Lemmy client I’ve tried that has an Apple Watch app! It is so nice to just review some headlines for a minute and save the interesting ones for later.
On my phone though I’ve been using Memmy more recently too.
I finally tried out Linux Mint this year at work (we use Fedora for some of our different tasks). It arms like such a nice experience out of the box, and I’d put it on a family computer in a second.
