I get that they have to protect their IP, but $14m is insane. Feels like the judge threw the book, switch, 3DS and every other console they could find at him. Does he have no right of appeal against the sentence?
When Bowser was first sentenced, Nintendo’s lawyer Ajay Singh said in a court transcript (via Axios) that the company wanted to “send a message” to other Switch hackers.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought sentencing was supposed to reflect the severity of the crime and make fair restitution? It sounds as if this sentence / restitution was massively inflated to create a deterrant, to benefit a private business. Huge fail from Nintendo imo that only makes me want to never buy one of their games or consoles again.
Edit: (Slice of bread with a hole cut in the middle and an egg fried in it.) I have always called them daddy-o eggs but I have recently been informed that is incorrect.-
GHO may be gone from the tournament for this year, but it isn’t forgotten. Found a nice article about them today. If you click through to the article there are some nice pictures, including baby owls and owls in nests....
"This owl uses the immense crushing power of its talons to sever the spine of prey when it attacks. A strong person can squeeze your hand with about 70 pounds of force per square inch; the crushing power of a great horned owl’s talons is 200 to 500 pounds per square inch! "
Wow, that’s some insane grip strength. Remind me never to shake hands with a great horned owl!
Shreks all day, baby. Why the heck would I want to be a stinky vegetable that makes people cry, when I could instead be a stinky ogre who makes people cry?!
I’m happy with my version of simple messenger, I’ve not updated it for a while… Am I good to keep using that? Can you explain more what you mean by selling out?
Tough choice, both exude fierce cuteness. Unfortunately for the Morepork, for me it has an association with Liz Truss, and the Little Owl is just adorable (unless you’re a mouse, in which case I imagine its cute flat head is actually quite terrifying).
Ah this is sweet to hear. I had a really bad, unintended interaction with a mod on another group recently and it’s made me really nervous about making silly offhand comments, so it’s good to know we can be silly here as long as we try to keep it light and polite :) one of the things I used to love about reddit, and love about lemmy is that I get to chat to people from all over the world. Like you say it’s a good opportunity to expand our worldview.
I’m a little envious of you, getting to experience all these lovely books for the first time! Terry Pratchett has such a brilliant style of writing. He manages to lampoon everyday life annoyances and foibles, into a bizarre setting but it still seeks to be perfectly relatable.
Also in reply to your other comment… You’re doing a brilliant job here! The vibe is perfect 😁👏
One of my friends in Finland has a couple of cats, one is fairly disinterested in people but the other loves to play fetch with her toys. It’s ridiculously cute.
I’d say to be careful what you wish for, because once the game has begun, it doesn’t end until the cat is bored. It’s impossible to resist the cute drop / sad little cat-activation-noise when you get distracted and don’t notice.
When Nicolas Winding Refn, the director of cult violent films Pusher and Drive, was announced as one of the creators of the BBC’s new version of The Famous Five, it left members of the Enid Blyton Society spluttering into their ginger beer....
I wasn’t expecting to love Lower Decks so much, knew I’d enjoy it but it really is incredible. Star Trek has always had a little sprinkling of goofiness but LD turns it up to 11!
The crossover episode is amazing too, didn’t realise how much the animators based the characters on the voice actors.
It was a good game, just it fell well short of expectations. When you compare the little systems that contribute to games by R* like rdr2 / gta5 feeling so detailed and alive, it felt a bit barren, despite all the gorgeous backdrop and cool abilities.
“mile wide, inch deep” would be how I described it. The story was excellent but the gameplay loop imo needed some work.
Have you played the new version / dlc yet (I’ve not so pls no spoilery spoilers)?
Thanks for the informative reply! I am definitely going to update at some point. I tend to only play one game at a time, not sure if it’s an autism thing but I get very much into one game, play it to completion, do all the side quests if I really like it, then move onto the next… don’t replay games very often.
I got the absolute worst ending possible on my CP2077 runthrough, I have a save from just before the point-of-no-return and was mopping up all the side activities with the intent of trying to get a better ending. Perhaps I should start a new game from scratch to really appreciate all the additions. Though, I wager I’ll be installing the car handling / HUD element and minimap resizing mods immediately, unless they’ve fixed those issues?
Yeah for $17 it’d be an absolute steal, assuming it’s playable. Iirc it didn’t crash once for me, just there were sooooo many ridiculous graphical bugs, and so many systems just felt half-arsed or unfinished. Some notable examples for me:
looking out over the city from a high point, zooming in on the traffic and finding out they’re sprites
no real police / law system, you could have your back to a wall and they’d somehow teleport behind you
on my first cyberpsycho case, as the “Thanks for work, I’ll take it from here” call didn’t trigger until leaving the area, I was unsure of what to do with the knocked-out psycho, so I carried them to the trunk of my car. Well, the game did not account for my idiocy and there were, let’s just say, interesting spaghettification results when I drove away
the autodrive when calling your car often had hilarious or strange results
According to the holographic principle, our entire 3d universe is a projection of a 4d space, so really the traffic is more realistic than other games!
It’s one of my fav wwii stories, can’t remember what rank the Japanese navy dude was but apparently the idea that Americans had an entire ship just for ice cream was a large factor in him calling to stand down
Hahaha. Reminds me of one of my own similar fails.
I bought this mop… I’m tallish at 6’. For at least a year I used this mop, cursing it everytime for being short. “What is this? A mop for dwarves?!” literally gave myself a bad back using it.
Until one day, something clicked, and I noticed I could extend it. Fuck my life.
That’s amazing, thanks for sharing your fail as I feel slightly less dumb now.
One of the best I’ve seen… was working on a track with a one of my writing partners, he’s messaging his gf who’s asking where his washing machine powder is, he replies, but the response makes him sigh deeply. Asked him what’s wrong, he shows me the message, it’s from his gf and says “babe… Do you realise you’re washing your clothes with dishwasher tablets?” 😂
My sister’s partner has a kid, with a woman he had a one-night-stand with. She’s an absolute fucking psycho, borderline negligent mother. Just about competent enough that social services do fuck all, but incompetent enough that the poor girl (who’s now 3) is blatantly falling behind in terms of development. And nothing he can do as he only has her 50% of the time.
My absolute worst nightmare. Wrap it before you tap it.
When life gives you lemons, cut a lemon in half, hold it up to life’s face, and SQUEEZE IT DIRECTLY INTO LIFE’S EYES. Fuck you, life, give me oranges next time.
That’s interesting to hear. How come they aren’t updating?
Tbh I don’t mind those ‘ads’ you speak of, not sure if we’re talking about the same thing because for me it’s mostly articles, often quite interesting stuff that I wouldn’t have seen elsewhere. Will have a look into arkenfox now as never heard of that
I wonder how many people who comment that in a broken comment chain know the origin. Figuring out those ultra combos and then memorising them, good times.
Just checked the wiki… 1994, fucking hell. Incredible graphics for the time too.
She has one of those faces that can look so different with a different hair / makeup combo, imo. I didn’t recognise her at all as Mrs McMurray, despite watching the entire Wynonna Earp series. Though I did have a “Hey, I’m sure I know her from something” feeling in Star Trek.
In all fairness I am a bit faceblind in general haha. Also have to give credit to her acting chops as the way she holds herself / speaks is so different in those roles.
I don’t get the hate for kale. Never would buy it after decades of reading how horrid it is… Decided one day to try it and found it’s actually refreshing and tasty, aside from the health benefits
10 years ago, I’d have put my ability to visualise at 0 out of 10. Practice and occasional halucinogen use has got me to 2 out of 10. It causes no end of problems in day to day life, so I’m interested to hear if anyone has tips or just experiences to share so it doesn’t feel such a lonely frustrating issue....
Sorry I’m well late replying to this! For some reason I didn’t get the notification.
I’ve been trying really hard to boost my visualisation skills. The best I can do is a vague suggestion of an image, it’s like made out of mist and dissipates instantly.
I think there’s probably like you said, a lot of people who think not being able to conjure a distinct internal image = aphantasia. On the other hand, I’m pretty sure I’m aphantasic as I score extremely poorly on any tasks that require mental image projection (eg manipulation of 3D objects, spatial reasoning etc). Iirc last time I did an IQ test which broke down IQ into various regions, I scored 17% on that part. And there’s practically nothing there when I shut my eyes and concentrate.
I would wager that without having done halucinogens a number of times, that score / my ability would be even lower.

Aphantasia... apparently 3% of the world has it. Any aphantasists in here, who've had success improving their condition?
