Theharpyeagle,

Pretty sure it’s a lot easier to do what cartoons have been doing forever: sell toys.

Theharpyeagle,

The best thing is that they’re made by people who grew up on the same stuff. Like OK KO is this wild blend of Looney Tunes and 90s/early 2000s Shonen and I love it.

Theharpyeagle,

In what way?

Theharpyeagle,

Hey, don’t go hating on Peppa Pig, that show is great!

Theharpyeagle,

I mean you remember the the greats of the 80s and 90s, that’s what makes them the greats! But how often do people talk about looks at Wikipedia The Little Lulu Show or Extreme Dinosaurs? As we go on, the good will be remembered and the rest will fade into obscurity.

Plus, kids have low standards. I remember begging my parents to take us to see Good Burger in theaters and I loved the hell out of it. Upon watching as an adult… yeah, it was terrible. That’s not too say that shows shouldn’t try to make good content for kids, but I do feel like a lot of adults don’t realize how little it took to entertain them as a kid.

Theharpyeagle,

For fun, I went through some old newspapers and really, nothing ever changes. Here’s one from 1959:

It even has the theme of “most generations think the younger generation is out of hand, but we’re really right this time.” So it has always been.

Theharpyeagle,

Also known as the “Winston from Overwatch” conundrum.

Theharpyeagle,

I’m terrified of ever having to take an ambulance. How the fuck am I supposed to know which for profit company will send a van out for me?

And so little of that money ever makes it to most of the paramedic and hospital staff. It’s insane that someone performing life-saving work on call makes, on average, $45k.

Theharpyeagle,

Because to some people the most important thing of all is representation of specific groups and everything else is secondary.

This but unironically. Any TTRPG game is about the players first and foremost, a good DM can take a few minutes to work out any inconsistencies with the world building if it makes a player happy.

Theharpyeagle,

Our butter is usually marked out in tablespoons. It’s also just known that a stick of butter is half a cup.

Theharpyeagle,

Taiwan (or The Republic of China) is a special case in that it doesn’t want independence from the PRC*, but rather they claim that all of China is part of the ROC and is illegally occupied by the PRC. The PRC, likewise, views Taiwan as a rebellious little part of their own country.

*I learned just now that there’s a political movement that eschews this view and instead just wants sovereignty for the land currently owned by Taiwan.

Anyway, as far as I know, Ukraine doesn’t make any similar claims to Russia (except for certain contested areas).

It gains some bite when most of the teachers either explicitly cheer on the bully or cough and look the other way.

Theharpyeagle,

Melting because someone didn’t configure the right profile and now isort and black are fighting over imports.

Theharpyeagle,

I… what? What does Ubuntu have to do with misogyny?

Theharpyeagle,

The fact that Windows 11 has removed the ability to move the taskbar and has no intention of adding it back is just baffling to me. It’s a small thing but so jarring every time I try to use it that I’ve barely used my desktop in the last few months.

Theharpyeagle,

Oh, this is good news for me. I remember trying KDE years ago and feeling that it was just way too heavy. My goto is usually Cinnamon, but the lack of Wayland support has made me hesitant to go all in with out on my gaming PC. Def gonna give KDE a try, thanks!

Theharpyeagle,

It’s especially great that they aren’t migratory birds, so you get to see these fattened little red fluffballs all winter. They really look striking against the snow.

Same with robins, they’re an incredibly common bird, but they are also so handsome.

Theharpyeagle,

Though the x11 is a real shame (looking forward to Wayland support soonish), I’ve found cinnamon to be the smoothest transition from windows. Since I still have to use windows for work, it’s nice to have something that doesn’t really disrupt my workflow when switching back to my personal laptop. And I find cinnamon to be pretty slick and stylish.

I tried KDE for the same reason, but it just feels a little too bulky.

Theharpyeagle,

Honestly with how shit windows 11 feels, I’m thinking of even switching my gaming pc to be totally mint. Thank goodness for Nvidia support and proton.

Theharpyeagle,

Death Grips is car jamming music, you really gotta get into that mood for it.

Theharpyeagle,

Holy cow, probably real happy it got released later. Though honestly it’s funnier that ice cream guy went deep into the mountains to finally enjoy his cone in peace and still got robbed.

Theharpyeagle,

I’m of two minds. I use Firefox for privacy reasons and don’t use Google if I can avoid it, but I have to admit that chrome was leagues better than other popular browsers at the time. It’s no accident that they ran away with the market share even when IE was on everyone’s computer by default.

Now they’ve gotten huge and their search engine has gone to shit. So it goes with infinite growth. I’m with Firefox for now, but I’ve learned the hard way not to totally trust any piece of software.

Theharpyeagle,

Most people really don’t care what browser or search engine they use as long as it gets the job done. I wouldn’t call it lazy or stupid, it’s just the reality of humans who have to pick and choose what they spend energy on. Yahoo search has been around a few years longer than Google and it sucked (and still sucks), that’s why people decided it was worth going elsewhere. If you’re going to try and wrench people out of their comfort zones, you’ve gotta put on a better first impression.

Theharpyeagle,

What’s the functional difference between the two Linux Mint versions? I’m thinking of switching to Mint as my daily driver even for my gaming pc, wondering if there’s anything I should be concerned about. Honestly I don’t even know the difference between Debian and Mint aside from the desktop environments they come packaged with.

Theharpyeagle,

Hah, good luck with that. Remember when they gave a guy $5k after destroying his house? Compensation for mental injury? No way in hell.

Theharpyeagle,

Honestly what’s wrong with making a trailer park?

Theharpyeagle,

On the other hand, you can throw one of these things together in a week, ensuring that people have homes sooner. You also don’t have to worry as much about soil conditions, water pressure, and all the other complications of building large structures. If the choice is between space inefficient homes or no homes at all (because the cost is prohibitively expensive), then the one that makes homes wins.

Theharpyeagle,

Genuine question, how many applications are bottlenecked by the size of text files? I understand your analogy, but even a doubling in size of all your utf-8 encoded files would likely be dwarfed by all the other binary data on your machine, right?

Theharpyeagle,

I also found that line hilarious. Like yeah plays may run longer, maybe into the 4 hour range, but they have intermissions with well-known signals when it’s time for people to return to their seats.

And, of course, old movies had intermissions, too. Has he never heard the “Let’s all go to the lobby!” jingle?

Theharpyeagle,

Honestly that sounds like a great time. Make a day of it, grab a bite to eat and talk about what you think will happen next. Sounds lovely.

Theharpyeagle,

There’s a tradeoff between security and convenience that has to be dealt with. You’re not supposed to reuse passwords, but most sites/apps require a login. How do you memorize a couple hundred passwords? An offline vault is safer, but also a real hassle to keep synchronized between devices and locations.

I’ve settled on memorizing passwords for financial sites and emails and storing the rest in a password manager. All I can hope is that, should a breach happen and my passwords somehow get decrypted, I’ll retain control over the most critical accounts.

Theharpyeagle,

Is Orville Peck considered country? I feel like it might be my gateway drug.

Theharpyeagle,

Man I miss his Lemon Demon stuff. I think he’s pretty busy with a young kid and stuff, but I’d love to hear more from him.

Theharpyeagle,

Otis Redding. I didn’t realize until recently that he died so young, I would’ve loved to see how the rest of his career turned out. His voice had such a special quality.

Theharpyeagle,

I’ve really been enjoying Wonder, I find the online stuff a lot more fun than I thought it would be.

Theharpyeagle,

Hades definitely has his issues (e.g. kidnapping someone and tricking them into eating the fruit of the underworld), but most of the other famous Greek gods were worse (especially Zeus).

Theharpyeagle,

Brooklyn Nine-Nine feels that way to me. Not that I think it’s a particularly bad show, but I definitely feel like the memes spawned from it already contain the funniest parts of the show. The actual content of each episode is kinda predictable with the protagonist learning stone sort of lesson.

Also I so desperately wanted to get into Bojack Horseman because I love animation, puns, and to cry while watching shows. The memes showed so many really deep and interesting moments, but by the end of the third season, I just couldn’t stand to watch Bojack learn a lesson only to revert to being a complete asshole an episode later. I get that’s kind of the point, but it was more infuriating than engaging.

Theharpyeagle,

I don’t know where you get this idea of “most women”, but I think you need to meet more people.

Theharpyeagle,

Listen, in industry programming (and for personal projects if you want to get them done), the thief is the way to go. By all means, challenge yourself to understand each of these functions, but 99% of day to day development will not look like this.

Theharpyeagle,

Some of the DLC, like After Dark (adds day/night cycle with changing resource use depending on the time of day) and Mass Transit (adds a bunch of new transportation methods along with new roads) feel almost essential to the game. Most of the others (like Parklife, which adds the zoo and some other stuff) just add a little more to do in the game once you’ve nailed down what it takes to run a city.

And then there’s the radio stations, in case you wanted to pay $4 to listen to the same 3 songs and 4 fake ads on loop.

Theharpyeagle,

Honestly, though 31 hours seems a bit excessive, I don’t blame them for being cautious. If it was a body, they’d be smart to document everything in the area and carefully navigate so as not to contaminate the crime scene. Lots of important evidence could be destroyed by someone just walking up and moving the body.

I’d rather them be careful and thorough with what turns out to be a sex doll than be callous and clumsy with an actual body.

Theharpyeagle, (edited )

I love the notion that the tension between the two was “created out of thin air,” and the solution is to drag both parties into it and make them say “either I agree with you or I’m a big stupid dummy who doesn’t care about my company.”

Theharpyeagle,

The more time I spend on development at work and at home, the more I truly despise constantly switching from mouse to keyboard and back. I’m no power user, but I may well check this out.

Theharpyeagle,

Ian Jones-Quartey, my man. He’s married to Rebecca Sugar, goodness knows what crazy stuff they’ve cooked up together.

A Lab Test That Experts Liken to a Witch Trial Is Helping Send Women to Prison for Murder in Multiple U.S. States (www.propublica.org)

The “lung float” test claims to help determine if a baby was born alive or dead, but many medical examiners say it’s too unreliable. Yet the test is still being used to bring murder charges — and get convictions....

Theharpyeagle,

How horrifying to have your wanted, stillborn child cut open like a high school science experiment. And what about infants who were able to take a breath before dying shortly after birth?

Theharpyeagle,

I ahem acquired a copy of Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak from my elementary school lost and found, played it whenever I had a minute for the next few weeks. I don’t know if I’d have the patience to play it today, but it’s still an adorable little puzzle game. The sound and animation of the actions was spot on.

Theharpyeagle,

Eh, certainly a lot of big sites are shitting their pants right now, but I don’t think the internet as a whole is doing that bad. It’s really the consolidation of internet communities in the 2010s that lead us to this point, now we’ve learned a hard lesson. Even as things fall apart, FOSS thrives in their wake. We’re in a pretty sucky transition period, but I think the internet will be fine in the long run.
