TheOgreChef,

I’ll see your over the top Volcano scene and raise you the grandma in Dante’s Peak dying via boiling-acid-lake-water death scene. How both of these movie came out at the same time AND had so many weird similarities will forever be beyond me.

TheOgreChef,

At a local Italian place called Ozzie’s, they used to have a crab pasta that is easily my favorite dish from any restaurant I’ve ever been to (like lick the plate good). They took it off the menu about 15 years ago, and I was so devastated that I think I actually felt my soul leave my body when the waiter told me. He had to give me a few minutes to mourn, and to this day I still feel sad/hopeful when I go back in and look at the menu. Fuck. Now I’m sad again.

TheOgreChef,

My great-grandfather’s rocking chair. I don’t know the exact date, but it’s from the early 1900’s and was refurbished some time in the 50’s. Still in amazing shape and solid as hell.

TheOgreChef,

The butterfly effect refers to chaos theory where all events are interconnected no matter how small, so a butterfly flapping its wings in Tokyo could cause a tornado in the mid-west USA. The lady bug is pure myth about one landing on you bringing good luck, no idea what specific culture/myth that’s based on though.

TheOgreChef,

I don’t know if it’s the same stat buffs/debuffs across all the Elder Scrolls games, but the one OP was likely talking about was the Redguard race in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (stat sheet here). And yes, it was pretty messed up.

TheOgreChef,

An actual faithful adaptation of I Am Legend. It’s a short as hell book and could easily be adapted almost word for word and still be a reasonably short movie. Hollywood had multiple swings at it without even bothering to try and get the main story arc or the ending right (and no, I don’t think the Will Smith alternate ending was good).

TheOgreChef,

Bloodborne. I gave up on 3 separate times, even after loving previous Dark Souls games. Gave it a 4th and final try, then didn’t stop until I got the platinum trophy. I don’t know that it’s my favorite souls game, but it left me the most satisfied when I finally finished it. Love that game and wish it would get the same remaster treatment that Demon Souls got.

TheOgreChef,

When a man does it, it’s genocide. Trial would have to take place at The Hague first.

TheOgreChef,

Bonus point : you can generate the menus with an AI.

But why?

Didn’t AI make up a recipe for chlorine gas for someone? I’m with you 100% up to the bonus point though.

TheOgreChef,

Delicious, but if I’m being honest, I don’t know that it is worth the money. Got this and a grade 9 wagyu from Australia, and that had more of a “beefy” taste to it, while the A5 was so fatty and rich it tasted almost like pork belly. I’m really glad I tried it, and it was lovely, but once was good enough for me.

TheOgreChef,

I think that’s accurate honestly. It’s worth trying, but it does need a sauce or something else with it to cut through the richness. As he (and you) pointed out, it might be better when it’s not the star of the dish.

TheOgreChef,

You’re spot on here. I had friends over and we cut it into strips like the one in the picture. Between 6 people, we split this and a grade 9 Australian wagyu and we all felt like we were going to burst. We all loved the A5, but the consensus was that the lower graded one was better as a meal. I said it in another comment: it was amazing, tasted heavenly, and I’m happy that we had the opportunity to try it, but I’d be fine never getting it again.

As a side note, I’ve never been more terrified to cook anything in my life. When your buddy blows $200ish bucks on a steak, you really don’t want to screw up your one chance to nail the preparation.

TheOgreChef,
TheOgreChef,

Serious question. Is this something that would generally just be prepared raw or with minimal cooking? I feel like it would just disintegrate the second it touched any heat source.

TheOgreChef,

Hotpot! Something that I did not think of in the slightest that makes complete sense, ugh my brain stinks sometimes.

It may be recency effect, but My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 could be one of the worst movies of all time. There’s no plot, no one has any motivation that actually matters, no one wants to be there, the writing is horrid, there is nothing in the film that’s even accidentally funny, & you don’t root for or care about literally any of the characters.

The big story arc revolves around bringing her dead father’s diary back to his childhood friends in Greece that he never saw after he left, then they bring them in for 30 seconds at the end and the don’t even have any lines. It’s like they forgot that they wrote the story about them and pulled in a few dudes off the street on the last day of shooting.

It’s not even so bad it’s good, it just makes you feel sad.

TheOgreChef,

Wasn’t there a report where some of the devs called him a seagull because he would just fly by whatever you were working on and shit all over it? Maybe I’m misremembering who that’s attributed to though, there are lots of terrible people in games.

Archaeologists Unearth a Medieval Skeleton with a Prosthetic Hand (www.ancient-origins.net)

In an extraordinary archaeological discovery in Freising, Germany, experts have unearthed a medieval skeleton equipped with an iron prosthetic hand. The burial, dated to the 15th century, offers compelling evidence of early prosthetic technology and medical innovation.

TheOgreChef,

What, you mean that wasn’t an early-colonial on-the-job training program?

TheOgreChef,

The atmospheres of pressure gag on Futurama is still one of the best that show ever did.

TheOgreChef,

The other thing about watching at home is the comfort level. Regardless of breaks, if I’m in my big comfy chair with no distractions from other movie-goers, it’s easier to be immersed and watch for longer periods.

That being said, his “unbound genius” needs to get reined the F in. I got flamed on Reddit back in the day for suggesting The Irishman was too damned long, but you could pick any random point in the middle of it and cut 45 minutes and nothing would be lost. If you feel the need as a director to make movies this long and bloated, just make it a miniseries for god’s sake.

At the very least, don’t get pissy when theaters want to give people a stretch/bathroom break.

TheOgreChef,

It’s actually a spinach, onion and garlic ciabatta loaf from a bakery in Maine called When Pigs Fly Bread. My wife’s friend lives up there and got us a loaf or two when they came down to visit. We first tried it a few years ago when we went on a trip up their way. They do deliver, and it is pricey, but it’s worth it if you get a bunch of stuff.

TheOgreChef,

That sounds pretty damn good!

TheOgreChef,
TheOgreChef,

At least half of these are the “Why he say fuck me for!?” meme. Costco actually treats their employees well, has razor thin margins, keeps profits low to maximize value, and pays living wages. Also, $1.50 hotdogs in 2023 is bordering on insanity as far as value is concerned.

I also have no idea how you truly avoid all of these without living like Ted Kaczynski.

I appreciate the honest reply, and I hope I didn’t come across as condescending in my last post as it was not meant to be an attack, but more of a “huh?” statement. All of those are valid concerns, but I would argue that while not perfect, they’re a much better version of Sam’s/Walmart/Target, and their bulk goods offering doesn’t put them in direct competition with smaller mom and pop stores due to consumers not being able to get quantities/brands that they always want. It’s also very supportive to markets like local restaurants and stores that don’t have built in supply chains that may not want to shop at conglomerate supply stores.

Short version, I don’t necessarily agree with you, but I appreciate your perspective and the well thought out response.

TheOgreChef,

There’s always a canal. Or an inlet. Or a fjord

Edit for formatting :/

TheOgreChef,

I started Starfield and dropped it after about 3ish hours (happy for you if you liked it, I just couldn’t find anything interesting there), beat Lies of P (could be the best of the non-Bandai soulsbourne games), and just started up The Lamplighters League (a fun X-com style game that’s good, but REALLY poorly optimized, so buyer beware).

Looking forward to Spider-man 2 though, only a few more weeks!

TheOgreChef,

It’s a ton of fun, and I hope you check it out! As an fyi on the combat, it is very perfect block centric like Seikiro, which I know is not everyone’s favorite Fromsoft game. I think the demo that’s out there gives you a pretty substantial preview though, so feel free to judge for yourself :)

TheOgreChef,

As someone who does it on a regular basis, I cannot recommend it enough. It is DELIGHTFUL.

TheOgreChef,

RecipeBox is another good one that has a recipe search function and a grocery list function that connects to your recipes and populates what you need directly from the recipe itself.

TheOgreChef,

That bread looks phenomenal for making sandwiches. Well played!

TheOgreChef, (edited )

As I’ve gotten older and had more sporadic time windows to play games (kids, work, life), I’ve gravitated more and more to rogue-like/lites and soulsborne style games. Having games that have a core gameplay loop that is 20 minutes to an hour is perfect for me, and I can kind of pick up and put down whenever I want without losing my place in a grand overwhelming open world that is miles wide, but inches deep (Starfield, I’m looking at you…).

With the rogue-like/lites, I can do a run and just go to bed and say “I’ll get further next time”, while with soulsborne games I can clear out an area and do a boss, then come back to do the next area/boss another time. If the lore seems interesting, vatividya will probably have a video on it some point to catch me up on whatever I missed.
