The UK does not hold companies to account. This is pointless under this Tory government. Google got away with data abuse because no one suffered any damages apparently. P&O dismissed its workers.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

The article doesn’t have anything to back up the claim. It is nothing more than click bait.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

It is not antisemitic to be critical of Israel. Governments need to wake up to this fact.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

The UN has never had any control over any country. It has has only ever been designated a talking shop where countries can get an understanding of each other. They may have voted a consensus on decisions, but that is by agreement not enforcement. If we had a body that could dictate morality to any country, then we would not need any country with a military.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

It wasn’t just about comfort; it was for standardisation. Having a proprietary interface opens up the threat for gouging the customer. If everyone uses the same cable then you can buy it anywhere.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

It is probably state instigated. Putin needs something to deflect from Ukraine.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

I think you missed the point of the forum. You are not really supposed to answer your own question.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

Disturbing propaganda BS.

A lot of premise based on the need for the EU to trade with Asia. Except the EU is actively trying to move away from these autocracies. Not because they are biased, but it is showing that supporting these regimes is proving to be a danger to world security. The more money these people have the more they are using it to finance military might, and then using that might on their neighbours.

How are these illegal sanctions?

How long has China been adopting the UN charter?

This is news to me. I guess we can all forget about the nine-dash line from today.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

Doesn’t answer the question. When has China accepted UN charters?

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

Hate to burst your bubble on that one, but all of the latest and greatest phones are made by cheap labour these days. Apple uses China and India, Samsung uses Vietnam, Google uses China and Vietnam with some assembly in the US.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

I find fanboyism pretty much a naïve attitude to have. These are large companies that only have one aim in mind, and that is to make as much money as they can out of you. That is not the same as buying into an infrastructure that gives you a comfort zone. All phone companies strife to push people into that comfort zone, where they do not want to change. On that I am guilty as charged.

All in all you spend your money where you feel happier about it. If Apple want to out price their products then people will find alternatives. I never understand this culture of griefing people for having differing comfort zones. There seems to be a lot more emphasis on calling out people buying a bad deal, rather than just educating people on where the good deals are to be had.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

I think that you mean by distinction, what you really mean some have a sensible approach. Both are likely to buy a product just by preference.

As for people buying the less informed option, if people are happy with their purchases, then let them have at it. It is hard to compare anything with the disappointment of buying something you are getting enjoyment from, only to find some smart Alec calling you an idiot. It is great to see guides on best purchases before you buy them, but once a purchase has been made there is no real going back on that.

the Palestinian militant group Hamas was not a terrorist organisation but a liberation group fighting to protect Palestinian lands and people

Then it is a liberation group that has war crimes on its hands. What Hamas did was wrong on so many levels. I think there is an overwhelming majority now see that Israel has done wrong for many years. This has been a massively provocative attitude towards the Palestinians. What Israel is doing to Gaza right now is also a massive wrong. Israel are using this as an excuse to take even more land in the West Bank. The problem will never be solved while the west support an apartheid state and ignore the actions against the Palestinians. But two wrongs do not make a right. There is no excusing murder by any party.

Gandhi is attributed to have said: “An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind”. At some point you have to understand how the people of Northern Ireland saw the issue. You will never bring all to justice for their crimes. At some point you have to draw a line and say this is where a new start begins. Israel needs to return the land stolen and let the Palestinian state develop. When people are impoverished to such a degree then this just invites extremism. Extremism only ever festers when people are under duress. Palestine will never develop while it is being hampered with Israeli aggression. This is the most obvious case for UN support to police the divide between the two states.

I hate games with very low playtime or just not very appealing to replay. Some of my best buys:

The ascent, Grim dawn, Shadow tactics blades of the shogun

Currently finishing Deperado’s 3 (version 1 and 2 is not very good imo due to incompatible graphics updates).

Just change your password again to make sure. If it is a fishing attempt then changing the password can make it harder for any chance of success. Use the official website by googling Apple login.

Syldon,

That makes no sense at all.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah I thought maybe marketing, but the article does state real blood. I cannot find a blue post to verify or deny it.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

I don’t play any Blizzard crap. I have done in the past, but the practises they use since they joined with Activision are shockingly bad. I posted this as yet more evidence of how bad the company is.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

As someone who donates regularly I agree. Donating blood takes very little effort and saves lives. My wife and I’s next session is due on the 31st. It will not be used for this as we are UK based. You are probably right about the end justifying the means, I just find it more than a tad gross.

You would think there is an election due. It’s like gullible’s travels

Digital Foundry - Redfall's 60fps patch works - but this isn't the redemption story we were hoping for (www.eurogamer.net)

“Assuming Arkane will continue development, clearly there are many areas for technical improvement, with some annoying visual glitches, oversights and outright bugs remaining in the updated code. I’m not sure that any amount of patching will make Redfall a truly good game, but Arkane has at least delivered the performance...

You would have to get rid of the crappy 3rd-party DRM before I would consider it.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

What roads did you take? A majority of that is dualed.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

So not really the main roads.

Most of the non main roads are a result of the feudal farming system. The US differs because people could buy up large rectangles of land which fit nicely together. The farming in Europe was a piecemeal affair, and roads were built onto to that. The UK is a very London centric country. The further north you get the less that is spent on roads and transport.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

There is blame on both sides here. What HAMAS did was abhorrent, egregious war crimes. They should be brought to justice. But we have ignored the war crimes Israel has committed consistently for years now. Two wrongs do not make a right.

It also needs to be recognised that HAMAS have done this to prevent closer ties. They did not like how SA were in talks with Israel. Without conflict HAMAS has no reason to be here. Any actions Israel take need to understand that this would be playing straight to the outcome HAMAS wants. HAMAS are showing they are nothing more than a group of gangsters, who depend on the conflict to keep themselves in power.

Palestine needs a two state solution. One that does not involve in one nation subjugating the other. Israel needs its security. The UN needs to step up and start playing a role in this. We cannot continue to resort to wars to resolve differences.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

That is exactly what war crimes are. War crimes are a step beyond murder.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

Hindsight is always a wonderful thing. The Taliban were created or at the very least heavily supported by the CIA. Iran is a result of US interference in the ruling of the country. The West are funding Ukraine in a big way, and yet we were critical of certain practises very recently. Ukraine in turn are supplying weapons to Russian revolutionaries.

It is easy to be critical after the smoke is cleared. The reality is that if you arm and train a group then they become a weapon. You only have good faith that this weapon will not be turned on yourself.

Biden specifically asked Israel not to use the situation for an easy land grab in his speech on the situation.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

Someone needs to educate Braverman. Just like the UK other nations have small minorities that are nasty and dangerous. That doesn’t mean that other countries should see the whole of the UK in the same light they view the Tories.

Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming Apple (www.theverge.com)

Samsung has released a new video in support of Google’s #GetTheMessage campaign which calls for Apple to adopt RCS or “Rich Communication Services,” the cross-platform protocol pitched as a successor to SMS that adopts many of the features found in modern messaging apps… like Apple’s own iMessage.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

Exactly. The software is being kept closed source. You have no idea if Google is up to its shitty stunts to data track or anything along those lines. If it was open source then that argument is gone, till then…

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

Everyone can audit the code you clown, that is the point. When it is hidden you cannot do this. If you are trying to be clever and demean my intelligence, let me put it another way, Everyone who can use google can audit the code. Writing code is not something restrictive, there are many, many guides out there along with syntax breakdowns.

Do you even know what the internet is?

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

Not a problem, I am not fragile in the least. I hope your hangover is a short one.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

I haven’t done any real coding since the 90’s. Excel meant having the ability to write your own software from scratch redundant.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

My point was that everyone can do it, but not everyone will commit the time and energy to do it. This fact alone is why people prefer an open source product over the hidden schemes behind the likes of Google and Samsung. And you right you will never stop malicious elements trying to take advantage of the flaws that are inevitable in the complexity of software today.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

Because the world is interconnected a lot more than it has ever been before. A single shooting in a very minor nation went from a terrorist attack to a full world war. The world is in a very precipitous state ATM. Many countries are looking for opportunities to take advantage of any weaknesses in world order to subjugate their neighbours. Now is not a good time to go gun totting frivolously.

Syldon,
@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

Sometimes you need to make absolutely sure it’s job done.

Syldon,

Is this a relatively new thing? I was under the impression that the UK conservative party was fairly different than US conservatives. I had heard that Johnson was a bit of a johnson himself, but assumed things went back to “normal” with his ousting.

I really don’t know when it infiltrated the Tories. Thatcher from the 80’s for all she was hated because of the way she attacked unions was certainly not of that ilk. Part of Thatcher’s persona was honesty and integrity.

Major who followed her did not seem that way. I listened to him giving an interview on TRIP, he seemed extremely genuine. He was also a major feature of Thatcher’s government.

I think the rot started when the Tories took a major arse kicking in 2005. I have no real evidence or insider information to back that up.

There was a lot of talk within the party regarding reform so they could get back on track. There was a very disturbing report written up from a group within the party. It was based around manipulation and where the party should aim for. One particular notable part pointed out that educating the poor was not good for Tory votes. People from poorer back grounds who gained degrees were less likely to vote Tory than any other group. DIRECT DEMOCRACY: An Agenda for a New Model Party. Page 12

The decline in Conservative support has been particularly marked among the most educated. This is not always obvious since more education is associated with higher income, and higher income is still (just) associated with stronger Conservative support. However, other factors being held constant, the more educationally qualified someone is, the less likely he or she is to support the Conservatives. This is a problem to the extent that the more educated are likelier to vote, and are often influential in leading the opinion of others. It is also, of course, a problem in a country where nearly half of young people are now going to university.

There is a conspiracy theory thrown around from time to time that defunding education in poor areas is done by design to increase the vote share. Something that is hard for a Tory to argue against in the UK, especially when you show the stats on funding.

If you read the report in entirety you will see republicans are mentioned many times over.

The first Tory PM in power after this was Cameron with Osborne as chancellor. I listened to Osborne on TRIP and was not impressed. I am going to say imo here, I CBA to dig up more details, it really annoyed me to listen to him. He told lies on his figures, he ducked and dodged with inuendo. It just felt massively different to Major talking. I have seen people quote stats on things that were wrong under Cameron and Osborne. This was not the view I had on them at the time, but that has since changed in hindsight.

Teressa May who followed them seemed genuine to me. She also did an interview on TRIP. I felt at the time she got a bad deal from the Tory MPs and the infighting. That view has not changed.

The rest is as they say history. Johnson, Truss and Sunak, all I can say is shithouses. And that is unkind to the toilet.

Both parties are known for gerrymandering now, the Tories are changing the boundaries across the UK. Both are recognised for hiding information through obfuscation. Both have shown designs to bully influential depts (judicial system, elections control, police etc). Both have shown a prevalence for gaslighting and talking nonsense to fog over issues. Both are reputed to have Russian influence running through them. I would guess the Republicans are known for selling government contracts to donors, something the Tories are going to loose the next election over.

@Syldon@feddit.uk avatar

I believe it was a report that was sold at the 2005 conference. The PDF was available for purchase on Amazon last time I looked. It made a few pounds in 2012 when Jeremy Hunt (the main author) was promoted.

As for the discrepancies, they were trying to sell an idea. Truth was not at the top of their agenda.
