Stillhart,

Did the definition of “trolls” suddenly change or is this author just using it wrong? Corporate astroturfing? Sure that makes sense. Corporate trolling? Not sure I get the point of that.

Stillhart,

Yeah, that day when you got your first whole MB of RAM… I remember mine was on SIPP chips.

Stillhart,

If you’re using nvidia and like Fedora, try Nobara. It’s gaming focused and comes with nvidia drivers.

Stillhart,

Easier for a linux noobie. Some people want easy, some people like to fiddle. It’s good to have choices.

Stillhart,

I’m very happy that you had success and such an easy time. Yay, linux! Yay, you! You’re the best!

Starfield design lead says players are "disconnected" from how games are actually made: "Don't fool yourself into thinking you know why it is the way it is" (www.gamesradar.com)

apparently this is in response to a few threads on Reddit flaming Starfield—in general, it’s been rather interesting to see Bethesda take what i can only describe as a “try to debate Starfield to popularity” approach with the game’s skeptics in the past month or two. not entirely sure it’s a winning strategy,...

Stillhart,

…this sounds like a company that simply has the wrong processes in place

LOL! OMG, I totally thought you were talking about their process for dealing with negative press/reviews. What’s funny is that your comment basically applies to both your point and mine and that kinda reinforces the point for both versions…

Stillhart,

I’m confused by the word “but” in that headline. Seem like they are trying to imply cause and effect when the reality is that readers trust outlets less who use AI whether they label them or not.

Stillhart,

If you game, and especially if you use nvidiva, I’d recommend Pop!_OS or Nobara.

Stillhart,

Wish it worked on linux. I understand it does for some folks but I don’t have the skills to deal with it. Oh well.

Stillhart,

I’m here looking to see if I need to bring my car in and it turns out it’s just a software update that already happened. Wow, such news…

Stillhart,

Nope. Been working just fine for a few years now. Can’t see them suddenly just breaking it.

There are plenty of reasons to avoid Tesla, like the fact that it took 11 months to repair my car because Tesla isn’t making enough spare parts. Or the fact that Elon Musk is a fascist asshole. I will certainly not be buying another Tesla at this point. But software? No.

And to be clear, every car manufacturer has an “autopilot” like system now. It’s not just a Tesla thing.

Stillhart,

The only one that really sticks out is Starfield. Most other games I played I knew what I was getting into. For some reason Starfield surprised me, probably because it was on Gamepass (so effectively free) and because I trusted Bethesda. Oh well.

Considering the number of great games this year, that’s not too bad.

Stillhart,

Oh yeah, I forgot about this one. Good call, definite stinker. Shame, would have loved an Arkham spiritual successor.

Stillhart,

Why would it be Steam’s responsibility?

Stillhart,

www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuaKzm7Kq9Q

This is how I learned about it. Afterwards, I talked to my teenage nieces who are both on Android and they confirmed that it’s definitely a thing.

Stillhart,

FYI, there’s a recent video that also touches on the recent news about this stuff. Posting it for you since you seemed to like the last one. No affiliation with MKBHD or Nothing Phone here, just sharing something I found interesting. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5HwS3bhlU

Stillhart,

If you’re going to use a 3rd party app to share photos, why not just use WhatsApp (or Telegram or whatever) in the first place?

Stillhart,

Is that game still the poster child for toxic gamers? Been years since I played but I would never let my kid play that game.

It’s sad because it is pretty fun when you get into it and when you have people to play with. But it really only takes one person to ruin a match for nine other people by trolling/feeding/etc. I ended up quitting because it was just WAY too toxic.

The shit people used to say in that game… like nothing I’ve heard in any other game. Literally talking about

spoilerraping people

like that’s somehow acceptable shit talking. Curious if it’s gotten any better… it certainly couldn’t have gotten any worse.

Stillhart,

Possible you’re in a noobie bracket where they keep you away from experienced players so you can learn with less stress… and get into the game before you realize how toxic it can be. :-D

But glad it’s good so far! It really is a fun game. I played for a couple years despite all the toxicity so yeah.

Stillhart,

People were begging for auto-mute back when I was playing. I realize that it’s a team game and they don’t want to discourage communication but they were well aware of the toxicity. They implemented the Tribunal system to try to address it. Didn’t do much in the short term. Glad rito caved on the auto-mute.

Stillhart,

Oh yeah, I forgot they added an official ARAM mode. Back when I played, it was a custom game thing and kinda honor system to stay in the middle lane. I played it a lot before I quit for the low stress environment. Kinda want to check it out now. Shame/not-shame I can’t because I’m on linux.

Stillhart,

The MOBA genre is based off a mod for Warcraft 3 called Defense of the Ancients. DotA, being a mod, had lots of “quirks” (aka bugs) in the game play that kind of just became part of the flavor of the game. LoL was the first standalone MOBA, based off DotA and (iirc) developed by some of the people who worked on the original mod. LoL was designed as a standalone game but it recreated all the quirks of the mod because they were believed to be so important to the game.

Blizzard, when they made HotS, looked at some of the wonky, quirky things and said “This is dumb, let’s strip that out and make it simpler.” The result is a MOBA that’s just as fun but less complex. I really enjoyed it a lot for that reason.

Stillhart,

Never heard of it, but I’ll be sure to keep away in the future, thx.

Is linux good for someone tech illererate.

Now i’ve been considering moving to linux. I don’t have much of a history using a computer and find it tougher to use than my phone. But I also really appreciate the foss movement. I’ve currently got an old laptop running windows 11 I think and it would prolly speed up with linux too. But I’m afraid I’d fuck smth up...

Stillhart,

If you’re not doing anything crazy, there’s no reason linux should be any harder to use than Windows.

Once you’re up and running, daily life will be pretty straightforward.

Plenty of great advice in the other posts that I won’t rehash. One thing I didn’t see mentioned is using a live boot to try out linux. You can basically run it off a USB stick before you install it to get a feel for what it’s like. Most “beginner friendly” distros will have tutorials on how to create the live disk. Example for Pop!_OS: support.system76.com/articles/live-disk/

Stillhart,

I am Jack’s COMPLETE lack of surprise.

Stillhart,

For the sake of those who love the game, I hope it’s true. Personally, I doubt it, but who knows…

Switching to Debian on my gaming pc

Hello everyone - I have been wanting to ditch windows on my gaming pc for a while now, and since I have recently finished a large project, I now have the free time to switch. I am relatively comfortable with Debian having used it for a while on my web server as well as school laptop, but I am concerned about using it on my...

Stillhart,

Ditto. I swapped to linux this summer and landed on Pop!_OS because my laptop has hybrid Nvidia graphics. Pop supports that really well because the company that makes Pop sells laptops with similar hybrid Nvidia graphics.

So far almost every game I’ve tried on Pop has worked with no issue. Of the games that have had issues, EVERY ONE got working with the help of Proton db. (Note: All Steam games or games with native linux support.)

Anyways, yeah I’m really not the biggest fan of Pop’s desktop environment, but it work really well for gaming so I’m leaving well enough alone.

Stillhart,

Couldn’t agree more. I don’t even need to watch the trailer, this is an instant buy for me when it comes out.

Stillhart,

Does the world really need another building/survival “game”? These are getting as stale as Ubisoft open world games.

Stillhart,

Not sure if iOS lets you use the “Private DNS” feature, but using an adblocking DNS is the way to go on Android.

adguard-dns.io/en/public-dns.html

(Looking at that page, it does have iOS instructions available, so I’m guessing yes.)

Stillhart, (edited )

I didn’t realize there was a cloud gaming option. I have Edge installed for work stuff (Teams and Outlook web) so I’ll look into that option. Thanks!

EDIT - Looked into it, works surprisingly well! EXCEPT it requires a controller. Kinda the whole reason I want to play on my computer is to use KBM, otherwise I’ll just use the ol Xbox. Oh well, maybe they’ll improve it in the future. It’s still a beta in theory.

Stillhart,

I didn’t realize there was a cloud gaming option. I’ll look into that option. Thanks!

Stillhart,

Technically, I am still setup to dual boot to Windows. But now that I’ve been off it for months, I really don’t want to go back even for “free” games. It feels like a triumph to be off it and every day I don’t go back into it when I can easily dual boot feels like a big middle finger to MS. I’ve been finding different ways to do that since the 80’s when I used DR-DOS instead of MS-DOS. :-D

Stillhart,

I have Edge installed via Flatpak and the cloud gaming worked perfectly. Shockingly well, really. Unfortunately, it requires a controller and doesn’t support KBM, which is kinda counterproductive for me since I can just use my Xbox to play with controller.

Oh well, it’s a step in the right direction. Maybe they’ll get KBM support going in the future. I’ll keep an eye on it. Thx again!

Stillhart,

I swapped to linux this summer from Win10 and have absolutely no regrets.

Actually, that’s not true, I do have one regret: I can no longer take advantage of the PC half of my Gamepass Ultimate subscription. It was nice being able to play games on PC that are just better with KBM (recent example: Steamworld Build would be much better on PC than console).

Beyond that one thing, which I will get over eventually, no regrets. Every game I want to play on my PC works perfectly fine so far. I’m not a linux guy. I don’t tweak things. I just turn on my computer and use it for normal computer things and then turn it off. Surfing the net, gaming, word/excel type things, Discord, Steam, etc. Everything normal works easy peasy on linux now.

Most average home users could get their computer preinstalled with linux and never know the difference after a day of figuring out where the new “shut down” button is and such. Hopefully MS keeps driving people away so we can get more people on linux so even more things work easy peasy.

Stillhart,

I’m on Pop_OS. I like Nobara better but on my laptop with hybrid graphics, Pop works better for gaming.

I didn’t follow any guides. I looked up individual games that had issues. Mostly I game on my Xbox unless it’s a game that plays better with KBM (think Civ and the like) or indy games that aren’t on console yet. Neither of those tend to have any major issues with Proton.

Stillhart,

Not a lot of brake maintenance on a car that barely uses the brake because of regenerative braking. I’ve changed the tires more than the brake pads on my Tesla.

Stillhart,

Surprised this crap has this many upvotes. Guess it’s a sign that Lemmy is growing…

…but it sure would be nice not to have to see shitpost memes upvoted to the top of non-meme communities.

Stillhart,

This. It needs to be visually uncomplicated so I can actually see what’s living on the desktop. Because of that, I prefer bottom right the most, though I generally like much darker backgrounds. Color shift that into something darker like an alien or night scene, and it’d be perfect for me.

Stillhart,

Sure, that’s definitely a feature for customers.

You misunderstand: the advertisers are the customers.

Stillhart,

(according to Xbox achievements I’m one of only 6% to bother reaching level 50)

When everyone gets to try it for free via Gamepass, you’re going to get very different statistics than when everyone has to shell out the money for the game and fight through the shit gameplay thanks to sunk cost fallacy.

Stillhart,

I feel like this post is guerilla marketing for “TempleOS”, which I’ve never heard of before and will absolutely not be looking up after this.

Stillhart,

Might finally pick up Risk of Rain 2…

Stillhart,

Personally, I find that researching games on the internet can be really fun. I get analysis paralysis pretty badly (I’m the guy who is always worried he will be out of consumables when he needs them so he never uses them in the first place!) so researching a little beforehand helps me enjoy myself more. I don’t need to min/max the fun out of a game, but knowing I’m on the right track is really good for my enjoyment levels.

And this is very much a me thing, and that’s okay. We play games to have fun so play the way that’s the most fun for you. If you don’t like doing research before you play, but the game seems to require it, then play something else. It’s okay to not like a game. (I wasn’t super into BG3… shhh! Don’t tell the internet or they will burn me alive! Good game, but not for me.)

Personally, I really like rogue-lites these days. They’re games where you are meant to replay them and every run will be randomized in some way so that each one ends up being unique. (Hades, FTL, Nova Drift, those sorts of games.) The randomness makes it so that there’s no WRONG way to play, just better or worse choices for a given run, which takes that “stress” of making a wring choice away for me.

You gotta find what floats your boat and don’t worry about the other games.

Stillhart,

There are lots of games out there, and just like any kind of entertainment, some will hold your hand and some won’t. Everyone has different tastes, different things they want to do with their time, different amounts of time and money, and there are games that cater to all of them.

Unfortunately, the only way to tell which is which without playing it first is by doing a little research.

So it seems like you’re a little stuck, you either play a game blind and hope it’s right for you, or you look into it beforehand to figure it out before spending your money. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect but hey, you do you. Good luck!

Stillhart,

Well, there is a pretty large community of gamers who play games on Youtube and Twitch professionally. You could always watch someone else play it briefly to get an idea of what to expect. Once you eventually find some games you really like the style of, you will be in good shape. You can then ask for more targetted recommendations here on Lemmy, or look up reviews for games in a similar genre, or find streamers who play games you like and look through their old videos for similar games (they tend to stick to a style usually), etc.

First step, I think, is figuring out not what you don’t like, but what you DO like.

Stillhart,

Weird how reading the article will sometimes give more information than just reading the headline, isn’t it?
