Yep in the settings for the account, you can specify that it’s a bot account. There’s no way to say “don’t show c/test on the frontpage” yet unfortunately.

As long as it’s reasonably well behaved, I don’t think we’d have any concerns. We’ll have to build up / iterate on rules as we see what users end up building.

I’m fine with it posting to c/test

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

There’s no real support for anything like this yet :(

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

… Who is this?

Am I bad Canadian for not knowing?

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

This is pretty solid, thanks! I’ll give it a bit to see if anyone else has ideas.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

Yes, but it might take us a bit to get to. We’re planning to setup as a nonprofit and I’d like to publish our financials.

In the meantime server costs aren’t that high so we’re not stressed about it.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

I wish the vendor area wasn’t inside the paid area this year, I would have spent some money at the market.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

I pay for it just because it’s cheap and to support them

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

Nope, that’s probably just lemmy being buggy.

If you scroll to the bottom of the page and click instances, you can search on that page for it

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

The problem is that it can fill up the new feed for new users, so they end up seeing a ton of posts with no interaction on them.

I personally don’t feel mass cloning of content from reddit over to lemmy, is going to help build a community. This isn’t stumbleupon.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

Nope, I believe it’s confined to communities on that instance.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

For All Mankind is by the same writer as ds9/bsg and is pretty entertaining. There’s some bad personal drama, but the space and alternative timeline stuff is good.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s like when your friends won’t stop talking about your ex.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

You mean communities, not instances.

Just make one and be the change you want to see. You can always give someone else mod later.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

Mobile apps are coming. Personally I was a long time sync user, so I’m excited for Sync for lemmy.

You can run android apps on Windows now I think.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

I tend to agree that they should not be allowed, but how would everyone feel about an exception if they’re obviously called out?

I think of communities like churningcanada on reddit for example, where affiliate links / referral codes are intentional and wanted by the community.

IE, something like:

  • Any affiliate or referral links must be obviously called out as such, with a clear description of what the poster gains and what the user would gain by using it

Tagging @mxwarp so he can share his opinions here :)

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah this is my thought too.

Is someone posting a YouTube video they made and are monetizing, advertising? Where do we draw the line?

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

Thanks! It’s not a rule yet, but that’s what we’re all here to discuss.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

These are actually stock themes that come with lemmy!

I removed the few custom ones since it’s difficult to keep them working while lemmy is getting so many rapid updates.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

We’re just behind cloudflare, the server itself and all us admins are Canadian.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m not an admin on your server, but they need to upgrade to 0.18.2-rc1 ASAP.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

Yep, this. Sorry about this, early software growing pains!

Shadow, (edited )
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

I’ll take a look in a bit but might be a new bug.

Edit: I can see the link just fine, even without deactivating it first. Can you try clearing your browser cache?

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

Want me to nuke your old version off the server?

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

This. Clear your cache and let us know if you still have trouble.

You may wish to try a different theme too, there’s new ones!

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah it’s way faster

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

Ooh yeah I like darkly-compact too

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

I belive this is probably fixed by the upgrade to 0.18.1 I just did!

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

Officially out now

Admins are in agreement that we don’t want federation with Meta.

I don’t see us currently federating with them - lemmy.ca/instances

We’ll make sure it stays that way! I’ve added threads.net to our blocklist.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

Personal take - I don’t think it’s reasonable to assume the meta will operate in good faith. I don’t have confidence that they will moderate their users, and I believe their only interest will be in slurping up 3rd party data to make their platform more appealing and decrease the chance a user will go elsewhere to find things. They don’t want you going anywhere else for that juicy ad revenue.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

For moderating users, I mean all the bullshit conspiracy theories. My dad lives on Facebook and has gone completely off the deep end, we need to start actively fighting against this instead of being tolerant.

Do you have an updated copy of your theme already? If you send it ahead of time, happy to drop it in whenever we do the upgrade.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

Applied!

Which gadget makes your life better?

For me, it's a bidet toilet seat. I bought one that didn't really fit as well as I hoped, so now I am shopping for a v2 based on experience. I don't want to live without one going forward. That's for sure.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

The good ones have built in heaters.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah a laser is not that great, an instant read probe is what he needs.

I love my thermapen

Shadow,

Correct! The server running this and all data is stored in Canada.

Here’s a blurb from a doc I’m working on:

Lemmy.ca is hosted in Canada at OVH in Beauharnois, QC with all data on a dedicated server. Backups are PGP encrypted and pushed to the OVH backup service, however these will be moved off-site in the near future.

We use Cloudflare as a security and performance layer in front of the server. They accept the traffic for Lemmy.ca through a worldwide network of ingestion points, scrub it of abusive traffic, cache the images, and pass it through an encrypted tunnel to our server. This means they can see in plain text the data sent between us including your credentials, posts, comments and images. You can read more about their policies at www.cloudflare.com/trust-hub/.
