Non-Profit Registration: Name suggestions.

It’s been on the back-burner for a bit but it’s time that I get on it and register our operation as a on-profit organization. We will be registering under the BC Societies Act. Completing this registration will allow for opening up a bank account under the organization’s name and reopen donations and have the previously...

TruckBC,

Would be interested in knowing what kind of future projects we’re thinking about?

Other than a potential matrix server, I do not currently have anything in mind. The future is unpredictable.

An example of a non-profit effort that I took on in the past is COVID PPE 3D printing with volunteer community printers. If something like that was needed for pandemic or disaster relief again would be nice to not have to go through the trouble of spinning up a new non-profit.

I think we can definitely work with Canadian Open Source Communication Association. Maybe swap out Communication for Community.

TruckBC,

Your “pointless Ted Talk” is greatly appreciated.

TruckBC,

Yes it will need to be redone.

TruckBC,

I’ve reached out to both the mstdn.ca admin as well as the CIRA.

TruckBC,

I’m just curious, any reason everything you post seems to be from the paywalled WinnipegFreePress.com?

I’m getting an uneasy feeling about that.

TruckBC,

The sorting algorithm is still a bit of a hot mess but slowly getting better. To my understanding yes, Upvotes and Downvotes do make a difference.

TruckBC,

Thanks for the kind words! @Shadow has been amazing.

You guys are amazing and I’m more than happy with the subscribed donation I’ve given to your instance.

Just so you know with the transition to the new team all prior donation subscriptions have been cancelled and we’ve yet to set up a new system for donations.

We’ll let you all know when we have a new system up and running right now but it’s not high priority as we’re well funded for at least the next 6 to 9 months if we don’t have explosive growth.

TruckBC,

I’m sure they’ll bring more features to it soon, and their GitHub should allow you to make feature requests!

TruckBC,

I’m curious why you say that. Seems to work fine on Android in browser.

TruckBC,

I’ll keep that in mind, and I’ve just had a realization, we can set up all the donation options and just not “cash out” until we’re determined non-profit status and how we’re going to set up the financial side of it.

TruckBC,

It’s not a massive complaint, but I’d hope “m.lemmy.ca” would be reserved for something more OS agnostic.

Yup. I get what you’re saying now. It doesn’t fit indeed. And yes m.lemmy.ca will be reserved for something more OS agnostic.

TruckBC,

I’m in favor and willing to help

TruckBC,

It exists.

It’s not totally accurate, so professional oversize drivers don’t trust it and double check signage by looking on Google Street view, and still check the physical signs as they drive.

TruckBC,

Even the one on DriveBC apparently has some errors, and so do the routes that you get with your oversize permit occasionally. At the end of the day, it’s ultimately the driver’s responsibility to make sure every overpass/tunnel/snowshed etc is tall enough for their load.

TruckBC,

And competence is never a substitute for double, triple and quadruple checking everything.

TruckBC,

The current funds are enough to operate it at it’s current capacity for ~11 months. Once we get to accepting donations again and figure out how to set up our accounting, I would definitely like to see a growing contingency reserve fund built up to be ready for future unexpected growth or unexpected slowdown in donations.

We will continue to be transparent in a similar format to this but split the remaining balance in a operating fund and reserve fund.

TruckBC,

That’s the plan!

TruckBC,

Ever contribution is greatly appreciated even if it’s just 10 cents a month (please don’t actually donate just 10 cents, payment fees are more than that). We currently don’t have plans of doing flairs but if we ever do we will keep what you’ve mentioned in mind.

TruckBC,

$137.xx right now per month. Moving images to Object Storage will slowly add to that.

We figure even without significant efficiency improvements for Lemmy we should be able to handle easily 25,000 users or so without adding more resources to that.

TruckBC,

Or support 3rd party app developers?

All the options sound great.

TruckBC,

We asked him to stick around for as long as he wants in whatever capacity he wants. Good to have his input for a longer transition period so we can carry on his way of doing things.

TruckBC,

There will be a huge drop off to drop as part of the transition process to the new admin team we have paused donations at this time.

We’re on the fence if we want to accept further donations before registering as a not-for-profit to avoid any of the funds having to run through my personal bank account.

TruckBC,

We’re Defederated from exploding heads, you shouldn’t see any content from that instance here.

TruckBC,

Just do it every day if you really want to still be active on Reddit.

TruckBC,

www.praxibetel.org/toro/toro.html

Pretty cool clock project from the early 2010’s

TruckBC,

I can’t even imagine how stressful it would be to be in that situation. It must really be horrible.

TruckBC,

I’ll have to ask Kamscan how he’s not being caught up by the rate limit and pass it on to my contact at the ministry. Explains why I was the one that updated on Twitter that the highway 3 closure earlier today has been cleared…

TruckBC, (edited )
  • option 1: Defederate from Lemmit.Online
TruckBC, (edited )
  • option 3: Ban @bot from lemmy.ca
TruckBC, (edited )
  • option 2: leave it up to users to block @bot
TruckBC,

We’ll share this post with other instance admins once there’s a bit more discussion, and maybe seeing this will get the ball rolling for other instances to have similar discussions.

TruckBC,

@bot, it posts links to Reddit posts in corresponding communities on lemmit.online. 99% of it’s posts get no engagement.

Unless you’re browning all instances sorted by new, you would never notice it’s activity.

TruckBC,

You’ll need to clear the cache on your 3rd party app either through app settings or by uninstalling and reinstalling

TruckBC,

I’ve contacted them to see if they would be willing to transfer it to us. Figured I’d have better luck as a Lemmy admin then just someone random. The domain name is under $20 a year so it’s a non issue.

TruckBC,

Let’s see what the current owner of matrix.ca says.

TruckBC,

Clearing cache & data should also allow you to re authenticate.

TruckBC,

I can’t remember exactly but @Shadow is the one that takes care of those things, I think he’s got it set up to backup every 8 hours? I’m taking a rapid crash course in sysadmin but I’m not really ready to start poking at production server stuff yet.

TruckBC,

Thanks!

TruckBC,

We have updated to a patched version.

TruckBC,

Power of the open source community.

In my opinion the “drama” was a critical part of immediately drawing attention to the voulnerabilty and bringing it to the attention of most instance admins very quickly.

Few things that have been added on my to-do list that I’ve learned from this.

  • We need more backend man power for coverage.
  • Major instances, and probably all instances should partner with another instance that’s in an opposite time zone for emergency response. Ideally having partnered admins and backend admins with no more than 8 hours difference between each one for 24 hour reliable coverage would be ideal. Partnered admins should in my opinion have each other’s phone numbers and have it set to bypass do not disturb.
  • We need to make sure users know how to contact admins off Lemmy for emergencies, as well as ensure that admins are tagged when a situation like this develops. (To my knowledge no lemmy.ca admin was tagged when this started to unfold.)
  • There’s more thoughts but I can’t remember them on 5 hours of sleep 😴

Any additional suggestions are welcome!

TruckBC,

No, but that’s a great idea. Thank you.

TruckBC,

We believe they have resolved it but we will remain defederated overnight.

TruckBC,

Lemmy.ca is hosted on OVHcloud as they have a Canadian data center. If you’re not specifically looking for a Canadian server, there’s many other options that are priced more attractively.
