Peddlephile,

And here, everyone, is exhibit A as to why critical thinking is going down the drain globally.

Peddlephile,

Doom, Event Horizon, Hereditary, Silence of the Lambs, The Big Short, Frank… There’s heaps of movies out there for us people who steer well clear of romance. They’re just not mainstream and I’m fine with that.

The only romance movies I really like are The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates and the 1995 Pride and Prejudice series. I think it’s because the characters actually have depth and are fun to watch.

Peddlephile,

Probably doesn’t like WFH because people can clock off when their task is done and he can’t ask them to work unpaid overtime.

Peddlephile,

Rain is no problem for me. It feels kind of liberating.

Snow… I’ve never ridden in snow. I propose dog sledding as a substitute.

Peddlephile,

The Mitchells vs the machines did it best. It was a great and entertaining story and I loved all the characters. Perhaps Disney should just make a story that’s worth telling?

Peddlephile,

So what if employees take advantage of the system if they still get their work done? If they don’t get their work done, that’s when a manager can step in.

Also 5 sick days a year is abysmal. I’d expect the sick days to get carried over where your sick leave is that low.

Peddlephile,

Pretty sure that’s just a nickname.

Peddlephile,

There are also those who make bad decisions and are lazy but have a lot of money and power regardless. Being lazy/making terrible decisions does not equal poor; same as being hard working/making good decisions.

The system at this stage is just geared towards making the poor poorer and the rich richer. E.g. making people pay lots of money to stay healthy rather than give people equal opportunity, making good education only accessible to the rich by making it prohibitively expensive, the wage divide between an employee and a CEO, family trusts and associated taxes etc.

Peddlephile,

Spicy take: we need to curb our addiction to power sources.

Peddlephile,

Depends. It’s a business here and there are lots of young people with MBAs and not enough experience to contextualise the things learned within the masters. I mean, some are even doing it post grad.

From my past experience with these types of people, I have a very low opinion on young people with MBAs. Business degree holders who want a shortcut to the top.

Peddlephile,

Whoops. My bad!

Peddlephile,

In my captial city, the lead city designer’s wife owns an industrial design company. All of the bollards, lights, bins, seats… everything is given to the wife’s company for manufacturing because the lead city designer only ever puts orders in to that company.

Everyone in the industry knows but doesn’t want to do anything because he’s a nice guy.

Peddlephile,

I like the concept of 15 minute cities/suburbs. You can get anywhere you need within 15 minutes, whether by public transport, bike, walking or car.

Peddlephile,

Like, why would you ever build a city differently in the first place?

Exactly. Unfortunately, in Australia, we tend to borrow stupid ideas from the US to make money and have sprawling suburbs with zero amenity.

For instance, we had a new suburbian development within 20km from the CBD with the promise of schools, community centres etc. in the early 2000s. When all the houses were bought and built, suddenly there’s no money for amenities so they just sold the land to developers who then put more houses in. Now the only way to get anything you need is by car because there’s no train or buses because it was supposed to be accessible by bike/walking but now isn’t. And not to mention gridlock of vehicles looking to get out of the suburbs for food etc. out of the one intersection provided.

I would love 15min cities without cars for my country but the attitude to cars here is similar to the attitude about guns in the US.

Peddlephile,

This is me.

I love watching the crested pigeons and turtle doves, and trying to understand their culture.

Peddlephile,

Give me a European style apartment with high ceilings and generous space and you have yourselves a deal!

That said, I’ve been working in my local building industry for almost 20 years and the trend that I see is that though there are more apartments being built, the quality has tanked. We have huge issues with mould, flammable facades, exploding glass, alternatives are rampant through the roof and price gouging.

Unfortunately this has fed the idea that apartment living is no good.

Peddlephile,

For my local industry, at least, generally houses are built better (not that they’re that great compared to houses built in the 80s or earlier) because the materials aren’t bought in bulk like they do for apartments and there’s less opportunity to ‘off spec’ (cheap alternative products).

That’s not to say that cheap materials aren’t used but there’s a lot less pressure to go bottom of the barrel. Plus, the home owner also has a bit more control than an apartment owner during construction.

There’s also a lot more that can go wrong in an apartment than in a house. Lifts, for example. We had an issue in one of the high rises in the city where a lift was broken and there was a huge queue. Whereas in houses, the main issue I’ve been seeing in housing is poorly built housing extensions from unqualified builders.

All in all, it’s more liveable to be in a poorly built house than in a poorly built apartment.

Peddlephile,

Does your dad believe that we can continue with our current rate of emissions and waste without consequence though? Maybe it’s worth discussing from an environmentalist point of view rather than climate change specifically. Perhaps the phrase has become taboo for him.

Peddlephile,

EVs are the biggest load of green wash ever and on par with ‘clean coal’. They still use roads and carparks which are environmental waste lands, they also need power to run and their manufacturing and distribution process is definitely not environmentally friendly.

Not to mention that their CEO actively campaigned against public transport in a bid to sell more cars…

Peddlephile,

If you’re forced to use a car to get to and from work in the inner city, you can blame your government and lobbyists. If you’re rural, it makes sense to use private transport, though I highly doubt it’ll be a Tesla.

Peddlephile,

Private health insurance.

Banks.

Peddlephile,

Welcome to crony capitalism

Peddlephile,

It’s already happened in Hong Kong for decades with the coffin apartments. It’s just now more prominently occurring in the west.

All businesses must move to a circular economy. This infinite growth nonsense is what’s causing this and it’s impossible to have infinite growth.
