I like dogs like I like toddlers. It’s fun to hang out with other people’s for a while, but ultimately they’re annoying, loud, and make a mess. I feel like in the past 10 years or so, dog owners have become increasingly convinced that everyone thinks their slobbering, untrained mutt is god’s gift to everyone, and expects...
This just happened to us today! We took the dog to some trails nearby. On the way home wife wants me to go by Target for a few things. We get there and she asks if we should take him in with us. I’m like “Hell no. I already think Home Depot is a no go even though it’s a common site there, but I draw the line at a place like Target.” And don’t even get me started on the rudeness of owners who don’t carry waste disposal bags any time they have their dog.
I’m laid up right now and I’m an anxious mess. I’m worried about finances and now my car. My mom said the engine sounded funny when she brought it over to her place, where I’m staying....
To expand on this - I’m interested in thinking about times that a cause we support won, not only because maybe it feels good to see positive stories instead of all negative, but also because specific examples might help illustrate why it won, and reveal strategies we can use in the future.
The crooked board of directors of our company hired a narcissist and small time corporate raider to become the CEO of our company. He did millions of dollars of damage to our company in three short years, but we finally ousted him and good people are back in charge.

My 13 hour flight just got delayed 7 hours, I’m stuck at my second airport, and I dont think I’m gonna make it. I have some movies and audio books on my phone, but really only anticipated having to burn the flight time via napping and some media, not 7 hours leading up to it, and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna mentally burn...
No advice, but I sympathize. I once sat listening to music while waiting for my flight to board. When there was no activity and fewer passengers in the area than I expected, I discovered that while I had been waiting they changed the gate for my flight. I ended up waiting in Chicago Midway (this was before their big upgrades in the early 00s) for 12 hours. It was hell.
That’s how I felt when listening to King’s Dark Tower series when Frank Muller was replaced with George Guidall (who is a fantastic narrator in his own right). Then I discovered there was a pretty compelling reason they had to switch.
My Uncle in the 1970s taught me how to make a cannon that went boom with just tin cans, electrical tape and Rossignol fluid, taped together and holes in the first few cans. Made a very loud boom. How was this made?
We used to make those too. We called them tennis ball canons. You pretty much described the whole thing. Make a big tube from a bunch of cans taped together and put a hole in the bottom one. Squirt lighter fluid into the hole, put your tennis ball in the other side, and light the lighter fluid through the hole.
All of the cans had both ends cutout of them except one…the bottom can. The end of the tube was sealed by that end of the can. On the side of the can just an inch or so from the end you put a hole large enough to squirt in the lighter fluid. I remember some kids shaking the tube to try and get the lighter fluid throughout the tube and not just in the end, but I never noticed that helped.

Every now and then I browse topclassactions.com/…/open-lawsuit-settlements/ to see if there is anything I qualify for. Most are $5-$10 things. But they give you these virtual gift cards with the money on them, and you cannot combine them all into one card. So now I have a bunch of these cards with $2-7 on them, and I can’t use them because there’s not enough on any card to buy anything.
My kids and I used to do this all the time. Lots of great memories. About the time the geocaching app in the Apple Store stopped working and they created a new subscription app, we quit. Any app recommendations for getting back into this? Anything free out there, or is it all subscription-based?
Some days ago, a neighbor invited me over because she was donating books that belonged to her husband, who died from covid during the pandemic. There were a lot of books, and even by choosing only the ones which caught my attention, I was able to get over 100 different books....
I’ve always had trouble labeling King as horror just because most horror is gruesome, and King rarely is. I used to be critical of his work because of that before I’d ever read it, and then once I started reading him I realized that how he’s marketed is very different from what his work is in reality. King didn’t like the movie of the Shining because it’s not at all like the book. But it IS a fantastic movie in its own right. Just go into it knowing it’s a very different story from the book.
Often with a Linux kernel update, or even after a first install of Linux in place of Windows, Bluetooth stops working and the advice is usually to just power off your computer, wait a bit, and then turn it on again. Bluetooth then miraculously works again....
As a non-technical person, someone on Reddit once explained in a way that makes sense to me as an analogy. Say you are on vacation for a week. Over the course of the week you get pretty good at going from point A to point B, and can even take small side trips along the way. But one day you get a little turned around, and you find you can’t get back to where you need to go. But if someone could pick you up and return you to your starting point, you could do just fine going about your business.
I don’t understand why, when people talk about what a dirtbag Trump is, so many people respond with, “Yeah, but person X is also a dirtbag.” Like yeah, so? That’s beside the point of this conversation. That person is also a dirtbag. Why don’t you start a thread to talk about that?
I think most all of us here on Lemmy are people with technical background. Most of my professional contacts remained using Reddit, Twitter and even excited when Threads launched....
This applies to me, except I’m an English major and had to cheat to pass high school math even with a full time tutor! I’m not intimidated by technical stuff though; when I get stuck I can usually find the answers by Googling. I did get pretty frustrated by how many times I had to try to simply get an account opened, and I still hate that I can’t see my password when I log in.
Gettin real goddamn tired of dogs

How can a naturally anxious person keep from worrying while laid up in bed with a broken ankle and leg?

What's a situation you were involved in where "the good guys" won?
To expand on this - I’m interested in thinking about times that a cause we support won, not only because maybe it feels good to see positive stories instead of all negative, but also because specific examples might help illustrate why it won, and reveal strategies we can use in the future.
Several Lemmy iOS apps look to have left TestFlight!
I’m currently trying Voyager. Initial impression is that it seems like a great app.
How the fuck can I kill 20 hours?
My 13 hour flight just got delayed 7 hours, I’m stuck at my second airport, and I dont think I’m gonna make it. What are your preferred news sources?
I like NPR and PBS but am curious if there are other good news sources elsewhere. Particularly elsewhere in the world, outside of the US.
Lemmy Democrats, what is just ONE nice thing you can say about Donald Trump?
Conversely, can the republicans of Lemmy say just ONE nice thing about Joe Biden?
I am pissed apparently Holly by Stephen King will not be narrated by Will Patton
I pre ordered the audiobook because I have everyone of the books in the series with this character and have been excited for this novel....

After migrating from Reddit, it’s jarring that comment sections aren’t cluttered with hashtag-style comments that are just links to subreddits like /HoLuP/
I love that comment sections here are like, y’know, discussions and stuff. Not just the same jokes and parroted phrases over and over and over.
How are we supposed to convene an impartial jury for a trial involving high profile political people? [USA]
Supporters of the person would just vote non-guilty and opponents would just vote guilty. It would just result in hung juries over and over.
What are your favorite news sites?
Regardless of the kind of news. I’m working on a TLDR bot and I’d like it to support the most used sites on Lemmy.
Sound Off: How many 10+ year redditors have left the site?
I was just browsing a thread on c/nfl looking for new mods. There were multiple 12+ year Redditors there offering to help....
