Except minivans are at least good at the one thing they’re made for, hauling people and their stuff. SUVs try to do everything, so they do everything badly.
Base 16 is great when you’re interacting with a computer, but aside from that, not much. Only being divisible by 2 is kind of a pain in the real world.
Except it’s not - it’s accurate enough within certain limits to still be useful today. It’s only inaccurate in extreme cases. Relativity is more accurate, sure, but outside of the extremes, it’s more complex than Newton’s and not worth the extra trouble.
I had a crazy Catholic prepper neighbor way back in '99 (she was the hipster of preppers, one of the things she railed about was all the people prepping just for y2k when she had already been doing it for years, but that’s another story) and one of her things was how evil bill gates was- so I told her Linux was evil-er because of the daemons. Gave her a lot to think about.
like I went to taco bell and they didn’t even have napkins out. they had the other stuff just no napkins, I assume because some fucking ghoul noticed people liked taking them for their cars so now we just don’t get napkins! so they can save $100 per quarter rather than provide the barest minimum quality of life features.
If there’s an empty napkin dispenser, that would be my assumption. But it’s been happening more often and at more places that no, they don’t even have dispensers, you need to ask for napkins.
Seriously, I wouldn’t even bother futzing with adblockers on my Android TV if it was reasonable, but fucking 45 seconds of ads for every 5 minutes of content is just ridiculous. I almost wonder if it was all an experiment to see how much they could get away with…
I had one of the old fashioned distorted text ones the other day, but instead of something like “please enter the text above” it just said “are you human?” next to the text box. Naturally, I typed “yes” but that turned out to be the wrong answer.
I’ve always argued this wasn’t the case and that motoring is a worse transport mode because of the associated externalities, not because of anything inherent to the users....
It’s not that they “took a lot of code from the GNU project”, it’s that “Linux” is the kernel, which is just the core of the OS, by itself it’s not very useful. All the stuff around it that constitutes the rest of the operating system, like the command line and the vast majority of the commands you might run from there, are the GNU project. And I’m not even getting into desktop environments.
Thisthisthis. I have kids, I’m not at all worried about them getting shot, sure it’s “possible” but it’s just so improbable that it’s not something I even think about. But holy shit, the way people drive in my neighborhood, I’ll be a nervous wreck when my kids start walking or biking to the park by themselves…
Is it “right and defendable” that a drowning person will quite literally climb on top of you and push you under if you get too close? No, but it won’t stop them from doing it.

I watched someone make this mistake during a screen share, she hit execute and I screamed “wait! You forgot the where!” Fortunately, it was such a huge database that SQL spun for a moment I guess deciding how it was going to do it before actually doing it, she was able to cancel it and ran a couple checks to confirm it hadn’t actually changed anything yet. I don’t think anything computer related has ever gotten my adrenaline going like that before or since
Youtube let the other shoe drop in their end-stage enshittification this week. Last month, they required you to turn on Youtube History to view the feed of youtube videos recommendations. That seems reasonable, so I did it. But I delete my history every 1 week instead of every 3 months. So they don’t get much from my choices....
YouTube existed before it was part of Google… if it becomes a money pit, they can spin it off, or let it die, in which case something else can take its place.
So I’ve been using youtube ad blockers since pretty much when ad blocker extensions were first available. Lately though I’ve been getting hit more and more with these messages that YT was sending out every 5 or so videos telling me that adblockers aren’t allowed. No problem, just gotta wait 5 seconds to x it out and then...
I bought a new laptop that came with 11, I haven’t had any super annoying issues… Actually the preinstalled Samsung apps are more annoying than anything OS related… But to be fair, when I was setting it up, I looked into how to do it without connecting to a Microsoft account - it’s possible but takes a little work. I wonder if that is the difference…
Landlords and groceries can just raise prices to bring the cost of living up
They already can, and do. If they do it too much, people leave that area. With a UBI, there’s nothing that says you have to live in a big city, it would be easier to move to bfe, where it’s always going to be cheaper. It’s not ideal of course to uproot and leave, but it’s possible, and it’s that possibility that keeps prices somewhat under control.
