At this point, I’m pretty sure I’d just fake my own death.

First we hear fast walking is more gay, now it’s less? Which is it?

Lev_Astov,

They could use one of those corten type steel alloys that develop a protective rust patina so it looks hideously rusty, but isn’t actually losing strength.

Unfortunately, the US Environmental Protection Agency (emphasis on mental) has rules in place regarding emissions per unit length of vehicle which effectively penalize manufacturers who make small vehicles.

I’m typically against government-run healthcare, but yeah, the insurance companies ruin EVERYTHING. I experienced how worthless they are firsthand, too.

I had a torn ACL and needed knee surgery with my insurance, so I went to the same doctor and same surgeon my housemate had for his ACL repair without insurance. After all was said and done, we compared how much we’d paid out of pocket and I maaayyybe paid $1,000 less than he did, while my insurance claimed to have covered like $30,000. And this was decent, corporate insurance that I’d been paying $120-170/mo for over the course of 6 years at that point. What a waste of money…

Why would they complain when they could just have the party’s healer offer to heal the NPC in exchange for something? That’d be especially great if they were a merchant.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

Sir, this is the Internet; we take everything we read at face value and only believe what we want.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

But we won’t serve it to you in the full resolution unless you use our approved devices.

No, apparently Overdrive offers digital delivery of movies now as well as books. I haven’t tried it yet, though, but they have been great for checking out library books on my phone.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

I made the mistake of purchasing a movie advertised as 4k on YouTube once. They wouldn’t let me view it higher than 480p on my PC. They also had the audacity to claim it was because too many people were streaming during COVID. Never ever again.

I also believe things that are free to copy and distribute should be free, but public institutions have to work within the legal framework we have and a digital library analogue is a perfectly adequate and painless work-around. Besides, you can typically check things out for weeks at a time, so it’s not like you’ll be pressured to watch it fast.

Lev_Astov,

That isn’t a Lemmy thing, but a morning people thing. I’ve seen it all over.

Lev_Astov,

And also under Intuit headquarters.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

We’re also using phobia to refer to irrational hatred now, apparently, so that could be more common.

Lev_Astov,

Yeah, it’s plain to see that engagement is steadily climbing. The top posts keep getting higher and higher numbers and new, interesting communities keep popping up.

U.S. Pledge To Triple Global Nuclear Energy By 2050 (www.huffpost.com)

When I first read the titile, I thought that the US is going to have to build A LOT to triple global production. Then it occured to me that the author means the US is pledging to make deals and agreements which enable other countries to build their own. Sometimes I think the US thinks too much of itself and that’s also very...

Lev_Astov,

Sounds like typical politicians.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I just realized what they intend and am thinking the same thing. It sounds like they intend a closed rail network between the ports to eliminate things like customs, but it’s still gonna take at least a day of processing on each end of that.

I feel like a canal between Ranong and Chumphon wouldn’t be too bad at around 27mi (43km).

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

This is an unedited exchange from the show IT Crowd while she’s trying to subtly tell them she’s on her period and they just don’t get it.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

Thankfully water falls from the sky and our residential use of it barely amounts to a single digit percent compared to industrial and agricultural consumption of water. Unfortunately some regions charge residents way too much for it and have the gall to try to convince the populace that reducing personal use of water will have any meaningful impact. All so they can get back 0.1% of the total water used so they can spend a few more minutes watering lettuce they’re growing in the desert.

So, the statute of limitations on stolen property is one year in California, so probably not possible.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

I thoroughly enjoyed that one. A different take on the Roadside Picnic genre and thoroughly weird.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

A few months ago? Ohio has been a joke for decades!

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

Have you ever read Roadside Picnic, the book the STALKER stuff is loosely based on? I highly recommend it and I love that they really have no idea what The Zone is. The best suggestion was from a scientist saying that we were like ants goggling at the trash and crumbs left behind after some beings beyond our ability to comprehend had a roadside picnic during a trip to our planet and left it all behind. We never witnessed the beings themselves, but their refuse is like gold and/or poison to us and we can barely comprehend any of it.

There were many immediate dangers within The Zone, but I like to think the main reason it was closed off was because some anomalies acted contagious to materials, such that metals could contract the effects and spread them to other metals. Imagine that getting out.

I thought PEX was just an industry term for HDPE pipes, but no, you’re right. The X stands for crosslinked and irradiation is one of (the more expensive) ways of achieving it. It sounds like most common PEX is made by adding peroxides to the HDPE or LDPE before extrusion and the chemical causes the thermoplastic to become a thermoset after the heat and pressure of the extruder. Neat stuff.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

I recently had to have my 1980s house’s water main connection replaced because they used some experimental flexible hose material from the late 80s and it’s all starting to embrittle and fail now. Wouldn’t have happened with PEX…

I’ve been reading about PEX now and it sounds like it only became commercially viable to produce in large volumes in the 1990s, even thought it’s existed as a form of polyethylene since the 1930s. It’s just now becoming cheap enough to be used everywhere because it’s obviously better and we have lots of material performance data on it.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

Yep, that’s the stuff! They tried to fish the new PEX line through by pulling it with the old stuff, but it broke apart in several places when trying to pull it out.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

Yikes! That’ can’t have been easy to replace.

Cat paralysis is a real condition!

Lev_Astov,

I always used old.reddit on mobile and had no problems. Not sure how anything could look any better.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

Wtf does “unreviewed” even mean? Are they waiting for some board to approve communities now?

Lev_Astov, (edited )
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

Certainly not any of the main changes made by the new Reddit UI. Except maybe the collapse thread buttons being long, vertical bars. That was a good idea.

To clarify: I also use RES, so that’s what I’m thinking of when I say old.reddit.

Lev_Astov,

Well, TP is the answer to butt cataclysms.

I just saw the grocery prices at a Target for the first time in years recently and was horrified at how bad they were. I’m sure it’s regional, but it was nearly double my grocery store on some items and the selection was terrible.

Look at this guy who doesn’t buy merch…

Lev_Astov,

I’d also be willing to bet it’s actually really great sauce.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

That really would have been delicious.

Lev_Astov,

What policy choices? He should have had his weapons confiscated after his recent issues under Maine’s yellow flag laws, but the police did nothing once again.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not like we’ve tried nothing; he should have been dealt with when he made threats, but the police don’t want to act on the laws we have in place. They want to wait until a tragedy happens so they can feel like they’re being heroes, apparently.

Lev_Astov,

I like to bite off just a little of the top and bottom of the sandwich cookie to aid in airflow/flooding, since the baked finish is sometimes nearly air tight.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

Why do these things always need to be apps when they would work just as well as a webpage?

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

Timers can easily be made in a web UI, so that’s no reason for an app over a website.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

SteamOS has been a big boon to the Linux gaming world.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

I’m disappointed to see that Lemmings hate this truth.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I found the same issue once I finally got my hands on any real N95s. Earlier I had built a mod for a cheap ARF-A gas mask that filtered both intake and exhaust using 3M P100 filters and that was dramatically superior to the airflow, moisture control, and overall comfort of the N95s I tried. As an added benefit, the eye coverings also kept me from absently touching my eyes like I often do, which is a major disease vector. I just look like a dork wearing it, but I’m used to that.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

Why wouldn’t you use an appropriate respirator for that task? Any respirator would probably be okay, but I’m a big fan of the 3M 7500 series for comfort and exhaust control in case you’re wearing a face shield.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

Commas don’t do that; that’s what em dash is for.
