You must pick a point in human history before the 1950s to be spend the rest of your life in. What era and place would you choose?

You would still have the same age, gender, personality, skin color, etc. and you would be able to speak at least one local language and would know basic information of the era and place. Your family, social standing, and such would be randomly picked.

DozensOfDonner,

Lol sports, cars, hunting are lame as fuck hobbies anyway

DozensOfDonner,

What a surprising reslonse from KLM, Smith, etc /s

DozensOfDonner,

Lotr: the two tower.

Something about a tower shaped like a two?

DozensOfDonner,

Damn his wiki doesn’t really describe anything he did to become a millionaire, except for being born is a good family. That’s really all it takes huh?

On the other hand, great to see these donations have already been added to his page. Fuck this guy and everything around him.

DozensOfDonner,

You’re fucking right, goddamn this guy

DozensOfDonner,

What the hell are they getting a Chi and Rho from? It’s clearly the Van Halen logo on it’s side.

DozensOfDonner,

Google has been shit for a while now, innit?

DozensOfDonner,

Yeah didn’t really catch any that was in there

DozensOfDonner,

Read a paper on this at some point, and this has become standard practise at home. Notice that visitting friends don’t do this, so I thought about looking framing the paper and/or some figures showing those plumes after flushing (can’t remember what paper it was but I guess searching pubmed for “toilet flushing” will easily give some appropriate results).

edit: OK “toilet flushing plume” did the trick and showed this marvel (see figure 2) www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9732293/

DozensOfDonner,

Going over the counter with a swab and some random household spray soap. I think some people have the great habit to always keep the kitching clean, but we don’t, and I’ve noticed that when you really try to keep it clean it not only looks so much fucking more calm and not like a mind-pulling warzone of stuff to do, but I also noticed less (fruit)flies, which, now that i’m writing it, makes our kitchen sound fucking disgusting.

DozensOfDonner,

Yeah I saw in the discussion that it is also not clear how it behaves with actual geval particles in the water. However I think multiple other studies have looked into spread of bacteria and viruses and showed this is found near a flushed toilet, but one recent review said the signs where there but it’s not certain it’s super significant for health. (If I remember correctly, i scanned them pretty fast in a coffee fueled random-interest vortex while I actually really wanted to get on with other things).

Oh and I think it can also help with humidy and mold in toilets? Seem to recall my sister did a BSc project on this and actually gathered data in our home. No clue how significant this was tho.

But yeah it’s also just polite, good habit to have i.m.o.

DozensOfDonner,

No no no no no no no nooo don’t taunt the seasons I never got to enjoy this summer please stay

If it were possible for some event to destroy the fabric of spacetime at the speed of light, could we still observe and be safe bc expansion?

Just a thought, if an event happened well beyond the observable universe that caused entire galaxies to be destroyed radiating from a point source event, what would it look like from our perspective and how close could it get on our observable horizon while still being unable to reach us due to expansion of the universe?...

DozensOfDonner,

Fun idea. You mean like the expansion of the universe is going 0.5 light speed at the edge of the void, so the spreading void is basically pulled back right? And then any photons that reached us from just before this void are traveling a tiny bit faster I guess? Being just outside the void?

DozensOfDonner,

Seeing how 90% of the ads I get are reeeeeally missing the boat, they might already be over- harvesting my data?

DozensOfDonner,

Yeah I’ve got ads for very weird, retiree, conservative dad shirts a lot a while back, with text like “dad: I fix things and like cars” or something dumb like that.

I’m in my thirties, European, super left, don’t like/never wil have kids. Wtf?

(By the way algorithms those facts are just a present, see what you wanna do with it)

DozensOfDonner,

I did notice that one we talked about vacuum cleaners or something, we got some ads about that. Weird i guess. But 90% of the time with household stuff like that its: research something (and start getting ads), buy something and keep getting ads for another month. And companies are posting top dollar for those ad- companies and their algorithms???

DozensOfDonner,

Wait what? You get ads for oncologists? Like what? Cancer medication?

DozensOfDonner,

Ah lol, that makes sense actually. I guess the algorithm isn’t nuanced enough to pick out a case such as yours

DozensOfDonner,

So it’s the second part of the remake?

DozensOfDonner,

Ah cool. Funny, i heard a lot about the remake before it was released but wasn’t even aware the next step was already at such a mature stage. Here’s hoping a ps4 version will be available :')

DozensOfDonner,

Lame. Guess I’ll just play this when the ps6 is released

DozensOfDonner,

Subbed to it last year because I like a lot of the nature stuff, and it’s pretty good. But to be honest, in the day to day live I tend to forget it and go for the quick and easy dopamine rush of a comedy show I already saw 300 times. A bit sad

DozensOfDonner,

True but they are rates of events, which could be said to be 0 for nothing and 1 for a spike.

That being said there are definitely some things in the way neurons behave that are not very binary, from the potentials driving ion flow to the way certain proteins act. Complex on amazing levels but I’d say it’s stil just a gloopy predicting computer.

DozensOfDonner,

The way Musk is acting should have some severe effects on any company he touches. It’s pretty annoying that he just so insanely wealthy that he can screw around and still have fuck-you money.

DozensOfDonner,

If you like cats and building things for cats this guy is amazing: www.youtube.com/

It’s a korean guy on a fish farm that started vlogging 7 years ago, and he had a lot of stray cats that he helped out, made food for, made sleeping spots etc. I think he became pretty popular in korean (1mil + subs), and he is now building more and more cool stuff for his cats.

DozensOfDonner,

There is a solar tanning parlor of sorts in a street close to us. I might just live in a bubble where noone would ever go to one of those parlors, but it seems to be open pretty late, and it feels like there are often some unsavoury people going in/coming out. It’s become a running joke that it’s a front, to be honest don’t have a clue but I wouldn’t surprise me.

DozensOfDonner,

Plus one for airfryer. Bought one that was on discount a few years back, has a spot on top of the cabinet when not in use but it’s almost always on the counter.

DozensOfDonner,

Good hiking shoes and some hiking pants. Especially the pants, got a set from the Decathlon for 40 bucks or so, light, airy, but not cold, extra pockets with zippers, zip-off bottom parts, elastic bands at the bottom. Use them for hiking but almost any activity that just requires a comfortable and efficient pant (actually it would work everywhere except at the office now that I think about it).

DozensOfDonner,

I think you could get away with an oven and a deepfryer with everything, but in my experience an airfryer is generally faster than the oven, and less oily than a deep fryer (I wanna say more healthy but I don’t really know enough about the details, so I’ll just stick to the objectively “less oily”).

I use it for fries (sweet potatoe fries most often), anything resembling nuggets (like vegetarian nuggets/schnitzels, other veggy pattys, falafel), fry-snacks (eggrolls, samosa, bitterballs), and you can get a bit adventurous with trying our breads, vegetables, or other stuff that you would just plop in the oven.

DozensOfDonner,

Ah, our just has a basket that goes right in the dishwasher

DozensOfDonner,

Idk, I’ve got good experiences with stuff from the airfryer so far, also in terms of crispiness and stuff. It’s idd different from a deepfryer, for sure, but works good enough for me. Also gotta say that I don’t have a deepfryer anymore, and when I had one years ago it was an annoying device to use, so I guess the ease of use is also something that makes me like it.

DozensOfDonner,

Oh yeah I think I saw a SciShow episode about this. It’s in like one category beneat red meat and “a bad night’s sleep”, if I recall correctly?

DozensOfDonner,

Don’t the current quantum computers also rely on superconducting materials that need to be kept sort cold?

DozensOfDonner,

“So it could perhaps turn out useful or totally useless.”

That’s a realistic statement. Although the MRI thing sounds cool as well. I recall last year a big grant for a big 14T mRI project was awarded in the Netherlands, I wonder if this thing will make them reevaluate their plans. Before this becomes viable in such a setting I can imagine a lot more is needed, but it would be such a typical thing that they finish building a 14T MRI and then “hey guys we just finished this superconductor pipeline and stuff is much easier/better now!”

DozensOfDonner,

Yeah for sure, it’s prolly a while until it’s developed into something feasible.

DozensOfDonner,

I’m in the same boat. In [email protected] I found some info on finding other communities but it’s still not a bit iffy, also i combinatino with LiftOff for mobile. Took me a while to find and sub to one of the “drums” communities.

howeverrrrrr, it struck me that I made a quick post on a relatively niche subject, even within the “drums” community, but I got a sincerely helpful and geniune comment within hours. If there’s not a lot of people but enough nice people here to have a decent flow of information 'round, that’s an amazing deal in my book!

What type of game do you want to play that doesn't really exist?

Have you ever played a game and wondered what if you could do something that it doesn’t really allow you to do, for example being able to move around blocks in Minecraft fluidly instead of in sectors, edit the world in Hogwarts legacy with spells, be able to fly in a world like Elden Ring or Elder Scrolls with epic sky...

DozensOfDonner,

I love beautiful environments and such, so if I could pick anything that wouldn’t exists based on something that does exist, I would make a 3D or even VR version of this old Korean 2D sidescrolling game called Maplestory.

Not gonna lie, that’s going to be 99.9% nostalgia, but it has a couple of awesome areas that have amazing backgrounds and thoughts behind it. Like typical magical forests, dungeons, cloud cities, but also a lego-gone-interdimensional city where time is weird.

Don't feel bad for the Moderators of Reddit

I should begin by mentioning that I am (was) a moderator of three subreddits: one large subreddit, one NSFW subreddit and a medical-related subreddit. After u/spez’s calamitous AMA, I joined Lemmy and haven’t looked back. I am really enjoying the Lemmy/KBin vibe. It is very much an alpha (almost beta) product and the ad...

DozensOfDonner,

I hope it’s a matter of time. I’m starting to feel more communities are becoming more and more populated and it’s by now just starting to top reddit.

Edit: thinking about it, if people still like it on reddit than, whatever anyone wants. I’ve got a feeling the quality is better here, so I don’t think I’d mind it staying a bit lesss mega-big.

DozensOfDonner,

Im still getting into DnD and don’t get it, can someone explain?

DozensOfDonner,

Wow, a sincere, thankful reply. This place is indeed a lot better than reddit, isn’t it? I’ll have to get used to this type of internet
