An extreme version of this is: What should the German health service do if someone says they are willing to donate a kidney as long as it doesn’t go to a Jew?...
So I’ve been tweaking my Steamdeck settings and whilst I don’t consider myself a total noob to this…I’m legitimately not sure what the difference is between the two, or which is more important to the overall smoothness of the game I’m playing.
The refreah rate is dependant on your display. On most monitors it is fixed to a certain frequency, in the past mostly 60 hz (hz means per one second), nowadays there is more diversity. That is how often there will be a refresh, meaning every pixel will change it state if there is a new image ready.
Frame rate is how often your pc has a new picture for the display.
Do you like a tactile click? Are you a sucker for screws? Or something you can put in any direction? Maybe it's yours or another country's power plugs?...
mqtt works topic based. It is for sending and recieving messages. You’ll need a broker to distribute the messages. Every client can subscribe to list of topics, the broker saves that list. If a client sends a new message with the topic foo, the broker recieves it and will try to send it to every subscriber of foo. When some client is offline and comes back up later the broker will still send it to them. Therefore it is great for IoT and smart Home devices

These actual benchmarks are just synthetic ones. In my personal expierence (using (ungoogled-)chromium and firefox side by side on the same sites) neither is noticeable faster or slower.
Hey, I’m wondering what everyone’s solution is for self hosted “cloud” storage of photos? I’ve been running a PhotoPrism server on my Synology for a while but it’s missing some features I’d like to have. While we’ve set up auto-uploading from different phones to the web server, I haven’t found an easy way to...
Photoprism is one user only, maybe some day they wil implement multi user. You can donate to give them an incentive to work more on it. For me it is good enough.
So with open source software more on my mind lately I was wondering - while I get the benefits of transparency and such, how safe is it? If the source code is available to all, isn’t it easier to breach for people (like the recent cookies hack)? If I’d have an open source password manager, would it be easier for people to...
If someone wants to find a vulnerability they will find a vulnerability.
only if there is a vulnerability. Which is possible but not necessary.
The only advantage open source maybe has that it’s harder to hide vulnerabilities for years
Vulnerabilitues should never be hidden but in stead eradicated. The true advantage of oss (regarding security) is that your implementations have to be secure. Security by obscurity is simply not an option
and it’s more obvious if they don’t fix it.
Security also means knowing about issues. When “they don’t fix it” in OSS, you at least (can) know about that, in closed source it is harder to be sure that the code is secure.
It is no all or nothing question. Some things are obviously more secure than others. Locking your door with a key won’t guarantee that there will be no home invasion but having no lock at all will make it much easier for potential threats. And open source software has advantages in this regard.
noScript with blocking all Scripts by default. Most sites rely on javascript to ask you the cookie question. Of course that will disable all other javascript functionality which i have to enable manually if I need it.
There are 5 testing areas for this atm and only a handful of trucks which use that. These are hybrid trucks having batteries and electrical engines besides the main traditional diesel engine. So it’s far from an widely adopted tech right now.
I mean, there might be a secret AI technology that is so advanced to the point that it can mimic a real human, make posts and comments that looks like its written by a human and even intentionally doing speling mistakes to simulate human errors. How do we know that such AI hasn’t already infiltrated the internet and everything...
That quickly boils down to “How do we know anything?” and the answer to that is “We don’t”. When you think hard enough about anything you can come up with an explanation why what we think to onow and believe is wrong. To get around that irl you can employ different tactics. For example, you can check how plausible sonething is. How many assumptions do you have to make for a theory? Usually, more assumptions means less plausible. And you can ask yourself " why does it matter? What would it change for me?" and the answer is most likely it doesn’t and nothing.

get a domain (third level from here for free for starters) and ssl certs from lets encrypt. IP Addresses and no or self signed ssl will look super shady for any not coputer savy person and is unsafe (at least no ssl is)
Does the reddit style format inherently make for a toxic environment? Or is it a culture of toxicity from the influx of reditors? For lack of a beter example, on stackoverflow, when someone down votes you, it comes with a comment saying how to improve. On mastodon, people can’t downvote you. These platforms are a joy to use,...
Mastodon was very depressing for me, this follower centric self presentation stuff is super not my style, it don’t want it to be about me, I most likely suck but I say smart things some times, so I want it to be about the stuff I say.
Plus I don’t mind being downvoted into oblivion. I actually think that this can be a good thing. It means that there was something at least controversial about what I posted so I might be wrong or have to argue better.
Lastly, mastodon is too much safe space and filter bubble. I want to read things from people that I disagree with and I want to argue with them in good faith. When I tried this on mastodon, I got misquoted, blocked, harassed… You name it.
I use different ones. Got an legit dpmain which I also use locally (with ssl certificates) and in my local network my server listens to SERVI. Just SERVI.
A project that is seperated in different files is as difficult as in C(++), Java or Rust. Regarding the itendation I agree, but that’s personal preference. What ‘vanilla’ stuff can’t you do without libs?
What can you do in C without including stdio.h? Almost nothing. Far less than with python. Ignoring built in libraries is no fair criticism imo. Also all that you listed can be done without importing anything, just with oop (yes, in a turing complete language you can already anything but I meant it is not even that complicated to implement these things with basic python)
I think it is an mediocre language if you’re into compiter science or dev, but for scientific programming and simple tasks it is great. So for some it is the best beginner programming language.
East Germany is recovering from the massive theft the Treuhand did in the early ninties after the 1:1 Währungsreform every honest and sensible scientist warned about. The Wiedervereinigung destroyed East Germanys economy.
Though you’re right that the Planwirtschaft in the GDR sucked big time, but not because it was planned. Rather it was a combination of different reasons, the ideologically driven lies in the managment, inability of the people who made the plans and the hidden classes in society. Not to mention the shit ton of money that went into surveillance. A really classless society with a planned economy based on efficieny would perform vastly different.
Also just coincidence that all those also shared many other negative aspects I pointed out? And what about all of them being in a disadvantage from the start? When Marx envisioned communism, he explictly stated that it is something industrialised societies should try to achieve.
And keep in mind that they always stood against the “free” world trying to shut them down. I mean look at Cuba and Venezuela, a large portion of their problems is the free world trying to free them with sanctions, coup attempts or full blown parakilutary operations.

I’m using a SSH tunnel to connect a port on my vps to a port on my home server. I have rhevssl certificates both on the vps and the home server (I trust the vps provider), but I’m pretty sure (correct me if I’m wrong!) that this would work with the certificates only on the home server. Could the vps provider do a mitm then? I’m not sure, the packets go in one port and are directly forwarded to my home server.
Can the vps provider get their own certificates? That’s a good question. I guess you could check the certificate when connecting to prevent tampering. Datetime of issue alone should be enough since vps providers can’t fake that. Unless you don’t trust CAs either :)
Quantum computing is mostly a hoax. At least how it is presented to investors and the public. Quantum Computers will maybe be capable of solving a very small set of problems much more efficiently than regular computers, most of these problems aren’t of any parctical importance. It is a massive (financial) bubble that is going to burst soon.
