AtmaJnana,

The time to buy a gun is before the fascists arrive at your door.

How often do you use "AI" to reply to your messages, if at all?

The recent chat bot advances have pretty much changed my life. I used to get anxiety by receiving mails and IMs, sometimes even from friends. I lost friendships over not replying. My main issue being that I am sometimes get completely stuck in a loop of how to formulate things in the best way to the point of just abandoning the...

AtmaJnana,

Then you’ll fit right in.

AtmaJnana,

You’re not wrong. It was already around for 20 years, before this comic borrowed it. I think I’ve usually seen it with just a caption or something. And this comic didn’t really add any funny.

AtmaJnana,

Is the word only ever written in the one textbook, then?

AtmaJnana,

As i read it, in the commenter’s scenario, it is the extra “i” that would be the typo.

Why Even Your Local Grocery Store Wants Your Digital Data (www.youtube.com)

I honestly feel defeated right now, it feels like currently it’s impossible to truly stay private online unless one is willing to move to a cabin in the woods with no internet and you stop using tech all together and truly become a ghost and stay offline. Can someone help me feel like everything I am currently doing is...

AtmaJnana,

Here we just skip straight to the horrendously jacked up prices.

AtmaJnana, (edited )

Nope, there was no sequel.

It is getting a remake this year, though. Jon Hamm and Tina Fey.

AtmaJnana,

Yeah, it’s a screen adaptation of a musical adaptation of a film.

AtmaJnana,

First the one, then the other.

Banks in the US use Open Banking APIs too, they won’t open it up for the public to use, though. Every company, not just banks, wants us to have their app on our phone.

AtmaJnana,

I use SugarCRM when I need a quick and dirty CRM. There are various open source forks. Its fairly easy to integrate. There are a few other FOSS CRM options, too. Never tried them but OnlyOffice has one, GNU Enterprise, SuiteCRM, Dolibarr, etc

en.m.wikipedia.org/…/Comparison_of_CRM_systems

IMO, the move would be to pick one and build integration for FOSS PM tools.

What do you mean by OTR, in this context?

acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/OTR

Eta: Probably “Off-the-record?”

AtmaJnana,

Be aware that powerful UV flashlights (especially the no-name Chinese ones) can also damage your eyes quickly without you noticing. Better ones will come with protective glasses.

AtmaJnana, (edited )

I mean, black light (aka wood’s light when fitted with a special filter) is UV-A. Hence it is important to educate people.

AtmaJnana,

Subtitle of the article:

Spying has always been limited by the need for human labor. A.I. is going to change that.

AtmaJnana,

FTA, emphasis mine:

“The flaw exists in the processing of user-supplied splash screen during system boot, which can be exploited by an attacker who has physical access to the device,” according to the notification, which noted that an updated version is available. “By supplying a malicious splash screen, the attacker can cause a denial-of-service attack or execute arbitrary code in the UEFI DXE phase, bypassing the Secure Boot mechanism and compromising the system integrity.”

Sure, but physical access is already no bueno.

I wonder whether this could also be exploited remotely. IIRC, my mainboard vendor provides software to update the boot logo from within the OS. I don’t think it requires any physical interaction. It does require admin rights tho.

AtmaJnana,

That’s what I get for reading it on mobile while parenting. Lol. Thanks, I obviously missed that.

AtmaJnana,

The job is small potatoes compared to jail time and a criminal record, which can be way more expensive, particularly over the long term.

AtmaJnana,

That’s a weird argument. Most people don’t want to spend their whole lives in prison. If you’d ever been in one, maybe you’d realize incarceration is not an experience most people enjoy… at all. It’s sort of the point. Suicide is even cheaper, should we recommend that?

AtmaJnana,

Thirded. June of 2020, the cheap clippers were already all sold out, so I bought a really nice set of clippers at an inflated price. But since I used to pay about $20 every month for a haircut, they paid for themselves fast. And now every time my partner cuts my hair, its like money going into pur pocket.

AtmaJnana,

LMDE is Mint without the Ubuntu. Don’t mind me, just spreading the good word.

I have at least 20 different devices that run some flavor of Linux. Servers, a laptop, TVs, AP/routers, probably more, if my other “smart” appliances run Linux also.

Do Android phones and tablets count towards Linux gaming?

PlayStations run a derivitive of BSD, maybe those should get honorable mention. ;)

Made the switch to KDE

I’ve been using Fedora for a couple of months now, and have been loving it. Very soon after I jumped into this community (among other Linux communities) and started laughing at all the people saying “KDE rules, GNOME drools,” and “GNOME is better, KDE is for babies.” But then I thought, “Why not give KDE a try? The...

AtmaJnana,

Well, for example, Xfce is very lightweight, so it works better for old hardware.

About half of my body is now occupying the same space-time position as my refridgerator.

I die almost instantly, the half that is left outside the fridge slumps to the floor and creates a gory mess for my partner to find.

Meanwhile, the other half of my mass is busy trying to occupy the same place as my refrigerator probably causes additional…effects. Does it explode? Does it just make a mess in the fridge? I will never know. Either way, it’s safe to say my family is getting a new fridge.

AtmaJnana,

Yes. I’ve definitely seen it, but don’t remember which instance it’s on.

AtmaJnana,

An “instance” is a techie way of saying it’s a copy of that thing

(disclaimer: I’m not a lemmy expert, just techie.)

A Lemmy instance is just the server where accounts and set of communities lives. e.g, Lemmy.world or Lemmy.ml, etc. Each instance can “federate” content from other instances, which is a way of publishing content to servers you otherwise wouldn’t see. You can see content and communities from other instances as well as comment on those other instances even though you don’t have an account on each one.

You could subscribe to all three, or just the one on your home instance, or whatever.

AtmaJnana,

Many (not all) recruiters will be happy to review it and give feedback.

What's your favorite compilation album?

I’ve been really enjoying the Red Hot Organization’s “No Alternative” and “Dark was the Night” recently, both because they raised a lot of money for AIDS research and because they do a great job of capturing the 90s alternative sound and 00s indie sound respectively, and it’s got me thinking how much I love...

AtmaJnana,

Do soundtracks count? If so, O’ Brother Where Art Thou? And Grosse Point Blank

AtmaJnana,

lets say they were bought by big evil corp

Is this an intentional joke? (I often miss jokes so I am asking seriously)

Authy was bought ages ago by Twillio, which also owns Segment (customer data platform)… So Twilio may not be all that big, but they’re fairly big players in the tracking and ads space. Which I loathe.

I’m in this thread because I want to move away from Authy for this very reason.

What item have you been using on a daily basis for the longest amount of time?

Sometimes I will use something and realize I’ve owned it forever. It’s a nice change in our throwaway reality. I think my personal record is a bicycle multi-tool I got for one of my first bikes, ~25 years ago. Still have it, still use it. When it comes to electronic devices I have a Panasonic mini Hi-Fi from ~2005. Never...

AtmaJnana,

You can upgrade parts , but not the OS.

Americans of Lemmy, what is your approach to next year's election?

2020 was… truly unique. It was so hard to stay away from doom scrolling, and I (and many others) were pretty disillusioned by the sad fact that so much of our country legitimately supported the Orange Man. I didn’t get a wink of sleep the night of the election because I genuinely considered it to be a make or break decision...

AtmaJnana, (edited )

Same. I voted 3rd party last presidential election cycle and it was cool because according to partisans (and their “support my team or you love Satan”,) this means I also got to vote for Hillary and Trump at the same time! Separate people assured me of this several times, so it must be true. Isn’t democracy great?

In all seriousness, I’d like to see a moderate party run a candidate. “No Labels” Forward (the party that’s totally-not-a-party, founded by Andrew Yang) seems promising.

AtmaJnana,

shit, you’re right. I had the two confused.

AtmaJnana,

If you want to make money hand-over-fist , you can’t shy away from the “normies.” IMO, using “normies” unironically is way more cringe.

AtmaJnana,

yeah, I do still buy from Chinese companies sometimes, but only if they are smart enough to use a name that doesn’t sound like someone just used a random password generator and said “good enough”… or … whatever the Cantonese equivalent of “good enough” is, I suppose.
