I just finished reading this and thought it was a lot of fun. I look forward to the next one.

I just finished a re-read of Tehanu, by Ursula K. Le Guin.

What’s a book you’d like to read next year, either a newly published book in 2024 or a book that you didn’t get to this year?

I’ll start:

The Year of the Locust by Terry Hayes (2024 pub. date) & A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens (not new 😉).

just trialling a new prescription of monthly multi focals after working with a contact lens specialist following a recent eye test. (Previously, I used dailies, from an older prescription.) So far, so good, though, oddly, better in the afternoon and evening. It was so good to find someone who specializes in contacts and is willing to work through issues with older eyes.

I as The Witness by Nora Roberts. Despite the hundreds of she’s written, I’m a 48yo Roberts virgin; she’s always been the of my mother & MIL’s generation. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I love good plots that don’t rely on dramatic breakups & makeups. While very white & not written specifically with this diagnosis of the FMC, she very much seemed to me as high-functioning autistic. @romancebooks @romancelandia

This is very much one of my favorite Nora Roberts' books, and worthy of being her 200th published noel.

I Gnome Sweet Gnome by Elva Birch ( 2/Lawn Ornament Shifters) today because rn it’s (not sure how long that will last), and because the cover & title made me laugh. This shorter-length Christmas story takes rom-com almost to absurd . Get ready for a jewel thief owl shifter to meet her mate as a Norwegian gnome factory owner. @romancebooks

I Claimed by the Barbarian Warlords by Charmaine Ross ( 1/Stolen Planet). I think it’s great when FMCs assert & fight for their own agency, but the burden of assholery behavior that provokes the fight for independence often rests on the MMC(s) in that plot line. This is the case for this story. I wanted to kick the alien warlords for being dumbasses for 75% of the book. @romancebooks

I Snowed In With A Dragon by Sara Ivy Hill. This Christmas of a sweet stalkerish dragon who waits for his girl until her boyfriend cheats on her is a little red-flaggy if you want your to be perfectly socially acceptable. Hill does honor consent. @romancebooks

@ALostInquirer not yet. Since it’s a one day sale, I only went through the list and added them to my library today - haven’t read them yet. But, as a generalization, I have loved other books by Sara Ivy Hill and Elin Wyn, and I’m likely to read their books in this list first.

ALostInquirer,

Gotcha, appreciate the heads-up! This is a nice way to find new authors to read!

I via When She’s Ready by Ruby Dixon. The audiobook is both When She’s Ready and When She’s Lonely. Both are very pro-consent post-slavery human-alien . I find these Risdaverse entertaining & mostly safe, more so than her other series. (I ❤️Ruby even when it’s scary.) @romancebooks

I want to add something to this post about the 2nd in this compilation: When She’s Lonely by Ruby Dixon. The FMC in this story has significant hearing loss that impacts her daily quality of life. If you look for stories of MCs with disabilities, and like or at least accept human-alien & sex, I recommend this. I recommend it anyway, but especially if this is in your areas of interest. @romancebooks @romancelandia

weirdwriter,

@ElleSabine @romancebooks @romancelandia Thank you for this addition! It’s made me want to give it a shot!

Bad book covers do such a disservice. For a pastime that exists mainly in the mind, an off-putting cover has the power to push away even the most literary of lovers. As much as I love books, when I want to buy a book, if the cover is terrible, I won’t. Books are works of art-starting with cover & ending with the story, & I want the whole, beautiful picture. 📚

Yes, i do feel the same way. When i was a child, my parents often bought award winning youth books for me and my siblings. There was a publisher, who had ugly book covers. I didn't even touch them. Never forgot this ‚beauty‘.

@Likewise @bookstodon Oh yes. I still avoid Don Quixote because my parents had a copy that had the most putrid yellow-grey cover and it comes to mind every time I see that book.🤢

Is anyone listening to the audio version of Making It So by Sir Patrick Stewart?

Besides the fact he could read me the phonebook, his narration is glorious storytelling. I can imagine sitting next to him, anywhere on the planet, listening to him share these stories.

He shares tales during his time working on Dune, which are, well, David Lynch worthy. And! You will gain a strong appreciation of all the times Shakespeare figured into Star Trek TNG plots.
