The title gives it away but the narrator is unreliable in the truest sense of the word. The chapters are written in such a way that, as a reader, you are unaware of her contrivance & the reality of the situation is revealed drip by drip.
A fabulous read & I'm not sure how the author will top this one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
@bookstodon Still thinking about a remarkable book, like nothing I've ever read: I WHO HAVE NEVER KNOWN MEN, by Jacqueline Harpman. It's speculative and post-apocalyptic, but also eerily psychological, examining what makes us human, what we need to form an identity, and the importance of friendship and intimacy.
I finished #Yumi and The Nightmare Painter by #BrandonSanderson. I loved it! One of my favorite #cosmere books. I feel like the romance felt a bit abrupt but it won me over in the end. The world building, as always, was a delight. And the illustrations were jaw-droppingly gorgeous. This would make a decent entry point for new readers, though they will miss the many cosmere connections. What did you think? (Spoiler for cover)
My author friend Jessie was hit by a stray bullet last week. She’s facing multiple surgeries (she’s American so that ain’t free). Additionally, as a freelancer, if she doesn’t work, she doesn’t get paid.
Alternatively, instead of giving to the gofundme, you could buy her books. Did you know selling direct is easy and painless? Not only that, but the author gets to keep up to 95% of your purchase – and they get paid right away! #booksbooksbooks#Bookstodon@lgbtqbookstodon@bookstodon#ScienceFiction

Jessie writes amazing diverse and inclusive sci-fi. She also writes books for authors.
Another swing and a miss from the #Goodreads recommendation engine. 🙄 Whatever algorithm it's running must be seriously broken.
I do enjoy beer, but I'm not sure how anyone would make the connection with a detailed narrative of the events leading up to and following the Battles of Lexington and Concord. #Books#Bookstodon@bookstodon
New website and a new book at the same time. 'Through the Night: Tales of Shades and Shadows' by Victorian writer Mrs G. Linnaeus Banks, with an 18 page intro by me, will be published on 28 August. Pre-order links will be up soon.
My #bookreview is brief/won't spoil, to spread good, great, & spectacular #horror#books far & wide.
SILVER NITRATE by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is an immensely compelling, propulsive novel about horror movies (Mexican horror movies in particular), filmmaking, the occult, chaos magic, secret societies... Her affection and knowledge of these things (and more) made this a delightfully spooky, fun read.
[Another reason books are going to increasingly suck--publishers are getting rid of most editors and copyeditors...and by the way I just saw "how to use chatgpt to copyedit your book" Oh...god...]
Several top editors at Penguin Random House accept buyout offers, layoffs also underway
Some of publishing’s most celebrated and enduring editors are leaving their posts at Penguin Random House after accepting buyout packages
#BooksOf2023 #1: #KeeperOfTheLosCities #3: Everblaze. My kids have enjoyed getting into a new series after we finished the #WingsOfFire books last year. These magical adventure books are perfect for our next series together. 📚 📕
@bookstadon#BooksOf2023#13: American Whitelash by Wesley Lowery. This was an excellent book detailing where our country has turned over the past 15 years and relates it to America’s racist past.
