📚 Summer Audiobook Giveaway: Week #3! 📚
We are now into the 3rd week of my #SummerAudiobookGiveaway! But we are changing the playlist for this round. Enter to win an audiobook from my audio playlist highlighting what I call the best audiobooks of the year so far, courtesy of Libro.fm!
Just added 'Unseen Footsteps' by Mary Williams (1977) to my 'Ionicus ~ Kimber Index' page. First new one I've added for a long time. These books are getting harder to find. Do wonder if I'll ever manage to get all of them.
My #bookreview is brief/won't spoil, to spread good, great, & spectacular #horror#books far & wide.
Fans of weird, unsettling tales, speculative fiction, & #Lovecraft's eldritch mythos will enjoy the stories in DARKER THAN WEIRD. It's a varied, imaginative collection: whether your yearning is for supernatural, human, or cosmic horrors, all are represented here to great effect. (Jackanapes)
@owlislost@bookstodon Hi #bookstodon, I'm immersed in CS Friedman's Nightborn: Coldfire Rising, long-awaited prequel to that trilogy. Also enjoying Inuyasha manga by Rumiko Takahashi, just got Bag Balm and Duct Tape by Beach Conger from the library, hope to listen to the rest of episode 45 of Old Gods of Appalachia, get in another tarot study installment with the excellent Tarot Neocolonial de las Américas by Patrick McGrath Muñiz, and ... some gardening, as 8ts actually not raining!!
i didn't expect to like it as much as i did. i found characters in Normal People shallow and pretentious, so i thought Conversations would be similar. i've picked it because nothing more interesting was available in #Libby in audio at the moment, and – ta-da! – it was so good! it may have something to do with the format – i might appreciate Rooney's writing better in audio than in print, and the narration was just perfect #books#bookstodon@bookstodon
@bookstodon
there was a moment when the characters had "duck for dinner" or something, and the word "duck" with irish accent was pronounced almost as "dog" 🙉 i chuckled thinking "there goes that lovely spaniel", and my mind drifted to what kind of conversations these communist-anarchist-intelligentsia people would have about eating dogs 😬
now i want to re-read Normal People in audio and see if my hypothesis about format of Rooney's books is correct #books#Bookstodon#audiobook

It's not often that I read a book that makes me literally laugh out loud, but Christopher Moore (@TheAuthorGuy) manages to do that with his "Fool" series. I'm almost done with the third book, Shakespeare for Squirrels. Lots of sex and foul language. My freshman year HS English teacher would probably describe the book as "bawdy," and it is, hilariously so. 😂 #FridayReads#Books#Bookstodon#AmReading@bookstodon
'Through the Night: Tales of Shades and Shadows' by Mrs G. Linnaeus Banks. Edited and with an introduction by me. . I'm a bit in love with this one, it has to be said.
OK, #Bookstodon. With pay day next week, I can put in an order for some new books. Some I've decided on, but I want your recommendation for a recent (published within the last 10 years) fiction book. Have got plenty of 'speculative' fiction on my shelf, so am after something set in the real world.
Send me your recommendation and why it's good. Most convincing recommendation gets bought at lunchtime today. #Books
Part of the SF Masterworks Collection. Despite being nearly 60 years old the narrative around the manipulation of the truth feels incredibly prescient. Wondering whether David Whitaker had read it before he came up with #DoctorWho story The Enemy of the World. #Books#Bookstodon#SciFi#PhilipKDick
This one has sat on my shelf for a number of years since I decided it would be a good idea to buy a load of Booker Prize winners. It’s quite a gentle read and pretty short, but I can’t say it really grabbed me. There’s no real plot to speak of, which I don’t mind, but I also wasn’t quite engaged enough in the characters to make up for that.
Debut novel by the national treasure that is Bob Mortimer. The plot is tidy and hangs together pretty well. There are the expected moments of slightly surreal daftness, but with it being tricky to make a novel downright hilarious the element of Mortimer’s work that shines through most is the general sweetness. It’s no game changer, but it’s an enjoyable read with some nice characters.
