@pivic@bookstodon one of the strangest things about #goodreads is how absolutely terrible its algorithm is at recommendations. You might assume that Daddy #Bezos and #Amazon would know how to make that work but its truly awful. I think I'm like a lot of people in that I use it to track what I'm reading and ignore most of the social functions.
Recently finished "Not A Good Fit At this Time" by Adam Hulse and had a blast with it. Check out my Goodreads review for details but fans of horror, science fiction, and dark fantasy should absolutely give it a read!
I got a 1 star #review on my latest book yesterday. I’m trying to figure out how this happen, purely on a technical aspect. I’ve never sent an ARC to anyone named “Alexander.” Also, this person only has 15 total books read on their #GoodReads profile. The other 14 a different genre, then there’s my book. Best theory I can come up with is this person didn’t want to ruin their pristine account by giving a 1 star so used another account to do the dirty work. #writingcommunity#author@bookstodon
If I needed more incentive not to use #Goodreads anymore, this was it. The choice awards are done in a way that not only disregards our diverse world but also does not recognize all aspects of publishing, only what is trending. #UseStoryGraph
Started reading I Love Russia: Reporting from a lost country by Elena Kostyuchenko. Being a queer anti-war Russian myself, this book is important to me, putting in words many hunches I’ve been feeling for years about history, loss, feeling of disorientation and subsequent resentment that led to the present moment. Note that the author is very much against the current administration and its course, and it cost her dearly
Annoyed to see how many people on Goodreads have rated the book 1 star either based on name alone without even reading it, or for it daring to speak with empathy about any Russian :(
Noting that I myself am not a #Librarian (though my mother was), as a reader I have to say: listen to Becky Spratford on the importance of the backlist, and how to put those books in the hands of the people who'll love them.
So, #bookstodon, here is my #goodreads challenge for this year, how is everyone else getting on? Why not friend me on goodreads? Also, any #bookclub on here? @bookstodon
Watched #barbie loved it. Binge watched the director Greta Gerwig and she recommended Jane #austen. Awesomely austen series is too cute. Having loved Mansfield Park marching ahead to "Emma" recommended by my bestie.
I am not even 1/4 through and my heart is already longing for some reason to read of Radhe and Krishna.
This is the first book of the "Fancy Nancy" series. Aaanndd Oooo laaa laaa such a lovely read with gorgeous illustrations. It is charming, endearing and delightful. There are abundant books for children, but the good ones are such a treasure, and this is one such. #books#bookreviews#illustrations#goodreads#happy#weekend@bookstodon
There's a social reading platform called @bookwyrm which is an alternative to Amazon's Goodreads. BookWyrm is part of the Fediverse, and BookWyrm accounts can be followed from Mastodon etc. You can find out more at:
They are currently trying to get BookWyrm translated into more languages, so that more readers can use it. If you speak a language other than English, you can help translate at:
Did #Goodreads just make itself worse? I used to be able to find "reading activity" for a given book that would show a complete history: when I added it to a shelf, when I started reading it, when I finished, and the same if I read it again, and so on. GR never made it obvious where to find this information -- it was always in an obscure location that made no sense -- but now that history seems to be gone or at least inaccessible. Am I the only one missing it? #Bookstodon@bookstodon
Teachers and #librarians who are looking for a new addition to your shelves this year, my book baby FRIEND ME is now a spirited toddler, celebrating its third birthday this autumn! It's the story of a bullied girl whose bully has a bad accident, and she starts to worry that her new best friend -- who she only knows online -- may be responsible.
