@owlislost @bookstodon I've been catching up on my reading this weekend:

OUR VOICE OF FIRE: Harrowing true story of a Canadian Indigenous woman who becomes a journalist while fighting the horrors of intergenerational trauma, the foster system, abuse, and the dangers of even drawing attention to MMIWG or by rising up to powerful companies who steal and pollute First Nations land. CW: assault

STONE FRUIT: GN about a Queer couple who learn about the healing powers of communication, and the expansion of what it means to be family, led by their precocious niece.

A FADE OF LIGHT: GN: a tender portrayal of how Alzheimer's steals from all of us.

(on Friday, I read) WHETHER VIOLENT OR NATURAL: a Piranneesi-like deep dive into the powers of the mind. This one has heavily descriptive prose, and a much more sinister vibe. For fans of character studies and literary fiction.

@sarahmatthews @bookstodon this is fun! I got In Ascension, by Martin MacInnes. It does sound intriguing.

As an aside, I have read both Old God's Time and If I Survive You, and thought both were emotionally affecting with great writing.

I've also heard great feedback on The Bee Sting, but have not yet read it.

Do any of you have plans to read the whole longlist, or maybe the shortlist when it's narrowed down?

@bookstodon Read this today: THEY DON'T MAKE PLUS SIZE SPACE SUITS, by Ali Thompson. In the excellent introduction, she explains that she couldn't see herself reflected in Sci Fi stories, so she wrote some short sci fi stories which specifically address fatphobia in society.

I thought the writing was great, and although we are seeing gains in sci fi diversity in general, we cannot rest until everyone can see themselves in stories.

We come into contact with an eschaton. An apocalypse. Revelation and disruption at once. A moment that redefines what everything means. “A moment that changes [all] the moments that follow,” Erin Morgenstern says. One that revises and reshapes. Starts and concludes. One that marks the end of everything you thought you knew, and the beginning of a whole new way to be you.

@bookstodon I'm sure there are thousands of talented authors out there, whom most of us will never discover. But, what a gift when we do!

I was unfamiliar with Scott Nicolay's work, but almost every rating posted on his latest book: AND AT MY BACK I ALWAYS HEAR, are gushing reviews by fellow authors. He creates whole little worlds in each novella, sucking you in with intricate, engaing*, details without using more characters than he needs to.

I would call this "a book of novellas for people who think that they don't like short stories."

  • at one point, I looked up and realized that I'd missed dinner by hours, deep into the weird fiction of the author. And Honey, I NEVER miss a meal.

i The Possessed by Elif Batuman now. i thought it was a non fiction about literature, but it turned out to be more of a memoir of an academic, and she got a sense of humour 😁
Elif's luggage was lost on her way to Yasnaya Polyana and she had to attend a Tolstoy conference in loungewear. it would be even funnier if she wore a hoodie instead of a shirt – hoodie is called "tolstovka" in russian, after, you guessed it, Tolstoy 🤓

@tishkova @bookstodon That does seem like the author is trying to do too much. Maybe it would have worked more effectively, if it had been a graphic novel?

As an aside (possibly on topic?) one of the most helpful and humorous books I've ever read about the (Western) classics is THE WESTERN LIT SURVIVAL KIT: AN IRREVERENT GUIDE TO THE CLASSICS, FROM HOMER TO FAULKNER, by Sandra Newman (who by odd coincidence, can read Russian classics in the original language).

@bookstodon Still thinking about a remarkable book, like nothing I've ever read: I WHO HAVE NEVER KNOWN MEN, by Jacqueline Harpman. It's speculative and post-apocalyptic, but also eerily psychological, examining what makes us human, what we need to form an identity, and the importance of friendship and intimacy.

The author and her family escaped Belgium during WWII. The fact that she survived while so many other Jews perished in the camps, is significant and greatly informs the story.

@bookstodon a great graphic novel I've read recently is IT'S LONELY AT THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH, by Zoe Thorogood. CW: frank, honest discussion of depression and suicidal ideation. It is one of the most creative GN's I've ever seen, using structural and style changes to reflect mood.

The author depicts people not just as they are, but how they make her feel. She even depicts herself in her different emotional selves. It's just flat-out amazing work. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

@bookstodon OPEN THROAT, by Henry Hoke, is a clever compact story, told entirely by a mountain lion living in the hills overlooking L.A. Themes include climate change, income inequality, selfishness, love, cruelty, and sacrifice, all seen more clearly through the animal's eyes. It is a short and worthwhile read.

I am fortunate enough to have free access to two systems, state and county, but they do charge non-residents. You are right about the difference in e-book choices. One of my digital libraries offers 40k choices and the other offers 26k.

Would it be worth it to pay for access from a library which charges the least for non-residents? I'm in GA, and there's a county, Coweta, which charges ten bucks a year, whereas most library systems across the US charge like $50.
