@bookstodon This book release week in the U.S. is too abbreviated for a list.

So, I will turn things around and ask you all to tell us about a great book released in 2023 that you loved. ❤📚❤

(Or if you didn't read any 2023 releases, any one book you keep recommending to everyone!)

kimlockhartga,
@kimlockhartga@beige.party avatar

@stina_marie @bookstodon At this moment (of the 21 I've selected as best of 2023, so far) I would say the top three are:

Clytemnestra, Costanza Cosati
Black River Orchard, Chuck Wendig
Chain-Gang All-Stars, Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah

stina_marie,
@stina_marie@horrorhub.club avatar

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon Awesome. I had Black River Orchard on my list already but I'll add the other two if they sound intriguing to me. Thanks!

@ksiazki

SceNtriC,
@SceNtriC@101010.pl avatar

@Smootnyclown Dzięki :) Parę tytułów znam ze słyszenia, ale nic nie czytałem. Może jak pokonam w końcu te kilkadziesiąt książek, które mam kupione w czytniku... :P @ksiazki

SceNtriC,
@SceNtriC@101010.pl avatar

No i książka jest dość droga. Cóż - zobaczę. @ksiazki

@NatureMC @bookwyrm @writers while I didn't dig deep, I'm not sure how bookwyrm would prevent fake review bombing... tho federated instances could block, but it's still lots of content moderation...

NatureMC,
@NatureMC@mastodon.online avatar

@pyperkub Of course but here real people and admins are working for that. I also think that with the size of the servers here, a bombing would be noticeable due to the size of the data. @bookwyrm @writers

Last night I finished Starling House by Alix Harrow. I had no idea what it was about when I started it, but I loved it. It's hard to describe without spoilers, but it's a complex story of families and poverty and bad luck woven into a great haunted house story. It wasn't scary, just creepy. Alix Harrow is now one of my favorite authors, she's brilliant. @bookstodon

You ever get the feeling that you just can’t read fast enough? I’m usually happy to mosey along, but this book I’m reading right now—Weyward, by Emilia Hart—is so interesting I just want to devour it, inhale it, consume aaaaall of it at once.

Sorry I gotta get back to my book; it’s too good. 👋🏽

@nik @bookstodon I've read it. Some content was too sketchy to my taste, at times. Three women's lives to be made "palpable" couldn't be an easy task of course. The witch trial episodes were not that convincing...

I just finished a re-read of Tehanu, by Ursula K. Le Guin.

@seanbala @bookstodon Afterwards, we went to Uncommon Ground, a local coffee shop that makes its own bagels and roasts its own coffee. We got one of the best mochas we've had in a long time and a bagel with some schmear. Worth checking out if you ever visit!

@seanbala read a book while @dohappybelove did some painting. A good afternoon that we needed at that moment.

A watercolor painting by Ruchika done at Uncommon Grounds. It is inspired by the first photo and has the following text: "Sometimes, reading or sketching or flaneuring is not a part time activity. It is absolutely necessary to restore one's weary soul."
The roasting machine at Uncommon Grounds. It made the whole place smell wonderful.
A wider shot of the cafe with Ruchika on a leather couch painting.

I re-read Nicola Griffith's Hild a couple of weeks ago and edited that review. I made even more edits today, then added comments about the second book, Menewood. Both get my highest of recommendation. This link is for the full page.

Readers and Friends of readers!
If you like witty wordplay, endearing characters, and a sense of fun with your mystery: PJ Fitzsimmons is your man. His Anty Boisjoly Mystery series is SO delightful; I read the seven books this year, most twice! It’s the kind of book you have to read bits out loud to whomever else is in the room. Or, if you’re feeling shy, just laugh outloud (to yourself).

I believe this is the link to his own space https://indefensiblepublishing.com/

You've made my day, Mardra. I'm sorry that I'm here so rarely and only just now saw your kind messages — I think I have to either commit to Mastodon or not.
Either way, I hope you know how motivational this kind of support is as I'm writing book number eight. Thank you.

I started reading Praise, Book 1 in the Salacious Players Club series tonight. I've read 71 percent of it in the last few hours. It's a change from the dragon shifter books I've been reading for the last few days, that's for sure. @bookstodon @romancelandia @readinglightsout

@RomComLove @bookstodon @romancelandia @readinglightsout I think it's one of the best ones I've read. A lot of the books I've read are so focused on the sex scenes that it seems like there's little to nothing else.

Fun question for #AuthorsofMastodon

If I've written a novella set a "high school" level academy, but the character is older than her classmates due to health issues keeping her out of school (so she's 17 and her classmates are 14/15)

Is this still #YA or is it #NewAdult

@bookstodon #bookstodon

mepurfield,
@mepurfield@kolektiva.social avatar

@KitMuse @bookstodon

I think it all depends on your content.

I would say YA but if it reads like Less Than Zero, I would say not.

I’m not much of a believer in New Adult as a genre. It’s all contemporary literature to me 😊

KitMuse,
@KitMuse@eponaauthor.social avatar

@mepurfield @bookstodon Thanks. That's what I was thinking.

I love a scifi where the rules of physics / mechanics are different, and the author steps up to the task of writing in a new way for it 👍

I'm just starting Azura Ghost by Essa Hansen, first in a series.

I do love discovering via my mastodon feed!

Edit: Ghost, not Ghist 🙄

Delighted to see The Tyrannosaur's Feathers selected as one of Peters' Books Of The Year 2023 in the category Junior Non-fiction:

https://peters.co.uk/news-page/books-of-the-year-2023

"I especially enjoyed this title as it approaches the popular topic of dinosaurs from an unusual angle and successfully mixes fact with genuine humour. The illustrations are really amusing too and perfectly complement the flavour of the text. It made me chuckle!"
