This seems like a new low, in my lifetime at least. A regime carries out ethnic cleansing in full view of the world - broadcasting its intentions in barely coded language - while our governments affirm their full support. The US sends aircraft carriers, vetoes calls for a ceasefire #Palestine #Israel (1/7)

Israel threatens to punish the UN for trying to protect human rights, blocks visas for its staff - who are trying to protect civilian lives. Talk about arrogance and hubris; talk about defiance of international law. #Palestine #Israel (2/7)

@nickmdowson@mastodon.me.uk avatar

Israel has killed over 7,000 Palestinian civilians and this number is growing by the day. Some 'revenge'. Millions more face ruined lives, after decades of grinding, squeezing occupation. Some reporting slants this as a 'humanitarian emergency' - calling for a humanitarian pause. No - the air strikes must stop. #Palestine #Israel (3/7)

@nickmdowson@mastodon.me.uk avatar

Clearly aid trucks and workers should be allowed in but this is not a natural disaster, not inevitable. Air strikes are intentionally killing civilians, engaging in collective punishment. These are war crimes. #Palestine #Israel (4/7)

@nickmdowson@mastodon.me.uk avatar

Meanwhile Israel is apparently targetting journalists and human rights activists and their families. The UN has recently found Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was 'intentionally or recklessly' killed, and over two dozen more have died in the last weeks. #Palestine #Israel (5/7) https://www.ifj.org/media-centre/news/detail/category/press-releases/article/israel-un-concludes-that-idf-intentionally-or-recklessly-killed-palestinian-journalist-shireen-abu-akleh

nickmdowson,
@nickmdowson@mastodon.me.uk avatar

That alone should be sufficient reason for journalists and media organizations to condemn Israel's acts. If our reporting is in the service of freedom and democracy, we have to make sure there is accountability for this. #Palestine #Israel (6/7)

Prof. Yair Bar Haim, professor of Psychology and Neuroscience and director, the National Center for Traumatic Stress and Resilience, discusses the current situation in Israel. Specifically, what work psychologists perform on the ground while we are at war with Hamas.

He also provides guidance for those in the diaspora about dealing with the associated trauma of what is occurring in Israel.

A unique coming-of-age story from the lost world of

Avi Shlaim was born in Baghdad and grew up in Israel. He is a Professor of International Relations at St Antony's College, Oxford. His previous books include the critically acclaimed The Iron Wall and he writes regularly for the Guardian, Middle East Eye and other outlets.

In July 1950, Avi Shlaim, only five, and his family were forced into exile, fleeing from their beloved Iraq into the new state of Israel. Now the rump of a once flourishing community of over 150,000, dating back 2,600 years, has dwindled to single figures.

For many, this tells the story of the timeless clash of the Arab and Jewish civilizations, the heroic mission of Zionism to rescue Eastern Jews from their backwards nations, and unceasing persecution as the fate and history of the Jewish people. Avi Shlaim tears up this script. His mother had many Muslim friends in Baghdad, but no Zionist ones.

The Iraqi Jewish community, once celebrated for its ancient heritage and rich culture, was sprayed with DDT upon arrival in . As anti-Semitism gathered pace in , the Zionist underground may have inflamed it – deliberately.

This memoir celebrates the disappearing heritage of Arab-Jews – caught in the crossfire of secular ideologies.

WTF is the world we are living in

> An associate professor at the University of California Santa Barbara claimed during a recent speech that the Israeli Defense Forces fighting Hamas terrorists is akin to police officers "murdering" George Floyd. He called Israel a "white supremacist Zionist project" and issued a chilling call to action; American progressives must kill the Jewish nation.

@geography
