Had a #history lesson about the Spanish encomienda system yesterday in class, including a discussion about the difference between using the terms "explorers" and "colonizers”. Since that lesson every one of my students has used the word "colonizer" to refer to the Europeans in the Americas during that time period.
Some will argue that #reparations have been paid to the internees, so we shouldn't have to talk about this history or dwell on it any longer.
But rehearsing this #history is important, in part, for the way it creates pressure and incentive to enact #justice for other groups and victims whose injuries have never been fully acknowledged, much less repaired.
