Yup Ubisoft, Epic, EA, Acti-Blizzard,etc and 99% of mobile game makers are decades into conditioning people to accept this shit.
First DLC, then microtransactions, in-game currencies, live service games, item shops, NFTs, ads, while releasing incomplete copy-paste games so now the apology letter, day 0 patch and promise of a roadmap for a shitty unoptimized new game is part of the experience.
Fuck these companies, we need to support the AA companies, the indie developers and a very few still decent studios who are against this bullshit.
Right now, downvotes (reduces) don't federate to (and from?) Kbin instances. This lack of federation makes the downvote counter really inaccurate—a comment that looks like it's +10 might be -15 when you look at it from lemmy.world....
At the moment I personally am a fan of the limited downvote federation because I do think it acts as a hivemind barrier;
I think it's a lot less straightforward than this. While it definitely drowns out the "hivemind" of the wider fediverse, it also creates a bubble within your own instance. If a lot of people outside of your instance think you made a bad comment but few inside your instance do, limited downvote federation creates an inaccurate representation of what people think.
Additionally, having downvotes but limiting their federation makes them extremely unintuitive and only serves to further confuse new users. It's actively misleading—you'd think that if you see 0 downvotes that nobody clicked the downvote button, but that might actually be 5 people or 10 people or 30 people. At least if you don't have a downvote counter at all, it's clear that downvote functionality just isn't recognized on the instance. I'd much prefer that over a straight up incorrect counter.
Overall though, I think the problem is how the downvote was used (on Reddit, at least) was not conducive to discussion.
I agree that there's a big problem with how downvotes are used. I personally use downvotes if something is:
spam
straight up hateful
completely off-topic
a nonsensical take that the poster doesn't support
In other words, if something isn't a reasonable contribution to the discussion, I'll likely downvote it.
However, lots of people seem to use the downvote button as a disagree button. I see this less on kbin.social than I do on other instances, and that could be a potential reason to not federate downvotes. If downvotes are used differently on kbin.social than on other instances, then I can see it making sense to not lump them all together. However, that only makes sense if people on kbin.social aren't using the downvote button as a disagree button (which they are, just less so than on other instances). And even still, there's the problem of an unfederated downvote counter still being misleading.
Rambling aside, I see three ways of handling this:
Remove the downvote button entirely.
Remove the downvote button, but replace it with reactions that people can use ("This is spam," "This is hateful", "This doesn't contribute to the discussion," etc.). If other instances adopt this set of reactions, reactions from those instances could federate.
Keep the downvote button and federate downvotes.
I don't like #1 very much because then you don't have a great way of indicating spam, hateful posts, unhelpful comments, etc. outside of reports that only moderators can see. #2 seems really nice, though both it and #1 come with the downside of filtering out negative feedback from instances with downvotes. #3 is also good, though it comes with the problems of downvote misuse.

When using open source drivers offloading should be automatic depending on demand. You can make it explicit with DRI_PRIME=0 or DRI_PRIME=1. You’ll have to check which is which.
Anyone here struggle with trying to adjust brightness on Gnome in low light? At the low end, the steps are way too far apart, and at high brightness they’re almost imperceptible. Every other operating system uses a brightness curve that better matches human perception....
Typically their is some sort of low-level knob in /sys (try find /sys | grep backlight) which can be used to set it to any value. Be careful playing around though because 0 is often completely off and it can be hard to set it back. (Although a reboot should fix it if nothing tries to be clever and preserve it at shutdown.)

Privacy and programming communities. I tried to stay at Windows at first, but when I was bith recommended GNU/Linux for privacy and had to use it for programming, I knew I couldn’t keep the resistance up.
Three years later and I have 0 regrets. All games I play work, except for, recently, TF2 because of a weird malloc library issue on Arch-based systems. All apps I need just work, and whenever I need something Windows-only I have a VM setup just for that. Developing and managing your system on a Unix-like system is just so much easier.
Have a read of Fate core, there’s an SRD online for just the rules but the core book is great for GM advice, even if the system is way too meta for my taste now. Blades in the Dark also has some excellent GM advice and is currently my favourite game system. I’m running a Fate game currently with nothing pre written and Very minimal prep week to week.
Session zero players make characters and decide what elements they want to see in the world, vampires, Wizards, cults, werewolves. This gives me themes and factions to work with.
Between session 0 and 1 I did a fair bit of prep (like a couple hours) but only so far as main factions, key characters, goals and some aspects. Once you know who the key people are and what they want it’s pretty easy to plan, they will follow their goals unless the players get in the way somehow.
Then between each session all I need to do is think how the world reacts to the last session. Usually all that means is that someone now wants to kill the PC’s as top priority. My usual planning time is like 15 to 30 minutes, often less. Though I’m happy running a very improv heavy game and think I’m pretty good at coming up with interesting scenarios off the cuff. Some people benefit from having more groundwork laid out.
Regarding illusion of choice, I started like that: do you go left or right? It doesn’t matter I’ve made one map and it’s a circle so your going to the end whatever you do. I find my current way more fun, it’s less work and I get to be surprised by what happens as well. Yeah it’s frustrating if I have a cool idea and the players decide that the faction it translates to isn’t that exciting and don’t interact but given all ove done with that facton is named the leader thought about their resources and goals if it’s not used yet it’s not really a waste of my time.
Just to reassure you that you can run games without a module and with very minimal prep but the improv muscles need lost of practice.

For a lot of cases the answer is lobbying, e.g. in medical/healthcare there’s practical 0 competition for a lot of products because of anti-competitive laws like really shitty intellectual property laws that let prices be controlled by few (collaborating) companies. Plus there’s a lot of things that are technically illegal, but in practice laws only apply to the poors so they’re not really illegal for corporations: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-competitive_practices#…
separation would require a referendum, which would have 0% chance of passing. nobody wants this, beside some whackos. this is all posturing by the UCP, both to their base and to the federal government.

He still added bike lanes that weren’t there before no? How is that harming personal non-car transit? Maybe go to city council meetings and ask that double parking in bike lanes be enforced. I would certainly think the city wants to make money from fines.
Also how many people are riding around on rollerblades? The “hexagonal bullshit” makes the bike lanes distinct and noticeable increasing awareness and also gives tactile feedback if a driver starts driving on the bike lane. Yeah it sucks for skateboarders but the tradeoffs are worth it, especially because again, how many skateboarders are there really? Some municipalities don’t even allow skateboards in bike lanes because the drastic speed difference between them and bikes tends to cause issues.
Could the bike lanes be better? Absolutely, they could be actually protected bike lanes like you pointed out but don’t let perfect be the enemy of good, they don’t “suck”. And 0 pedestrian deaths over the span of a few years is very very good.
You’re missing my point bud. Everything is hot compared to something at 0 kelvin.
Everyone is left compared to the most right wing person, everyone is right compared to the most left wing person. It’s why people here often claim reddit is right leaning, despite it heavily favouring the left.
Being the most anything is rarely good, extremes prevent people seeing the other side way too often and very few subjects are 100% anything, most have nuance.
Just making a joke about why someone might accuse you of being a fascist.
