The solution is to take away Hungary’s voting right in the EU. That sucks, but it is desperately necessary not just due to Russia, but also China. Without EU funds Orban has a massive problem.

Is that snow or cocaine from zelensky?

That’s a very Nazi thing to do.

Squizzy, in The total combat losses of the enemy from 24.02.2022 to 18.12.2023

350,000 by Christmas… that’s some heavy losses over the last 6 weeks. Unbelievable

benjhm, in Give Russia’s Frozen Assets to Ukraine Now

What are we waiting for ?

I guess - coordination among the western governments - as if only some participate, those that don’t might gain from future investments from bullying autocracies. Also, there may be reciprocal losses whose impacts would be unbalanced.
But it seems to me the risks of setting such precedent are far outweighed by the risk of increasing irrelevance for our democratic values in a world of increasing autocracy, if we let p***n and team get away without paying for such destruction.
Maybe there is some way to do this incrementally, to provide more motivation to depose the tsar, stop, and quit, sooner rather than later?

The problem is that once you take assets from Russian oligarchs for being aholes, it becomes much easier to do the same for our local rich aholes as well.

benjhm,

Maybe so. But can anybody tell us, what fraction of this big sum is private wealth, rather than government assets ? If it includes items like mansions in london and french riviera the value could be much less in a fire-sale - only so many sheikhs to take over, and they might get worried too. So the “local rich” might hope to pick up bargains.

hydroptic,

You can say “asshole” on the internet. Trying to “censor” it by hiding two letters doesn’t change the fact that you’re still using that word and everyone knows it; if you don’t like cursing then don’t fucking do it, but don’t pretend you’re not cursing when it’s clear what you were trying to say

lolcatnip,

Sounds great to me.

Instrument_Data, in Rarely used loophole could allow Ukraine allies to unlock aid funds

Luckily EU is not something like USA where a bunch of politicians can stop everything: here nations can happily ignore hungary and do the fuck they want.
Good luck Orban stopping nations.

dumdum666,

Unfortunately Orban can … and he was just paid off (10 billion euros) to leave the room when they voted to start accession talks with ukraine

This is a defect within the EU because the creators of the EU actually thought that all their countries would stay democratic …

bouh,

That’s not because they were naive. You don’t understand the state of Europe at the end of ww2 if you think this is the case. For the record, half of western Europe was still fascist at this time, and most of the countries would happily engage in an all out war to settle a hundred years old dispute.

The functioning of Europe is what it is because all European countries were very wary of the others, and very protective of their sovereignty. The only way to get Europe to exist was to have every member get a veto, basically. This way, each country can bargain what it gives to allow a common decision. And no country would be forced to do something by a more powerful country.

That’s why it works.

Now, fascist anti-europe leader getting to power happened. It’s not that it wasn’t supposed to happen, Europe wasn’t built to be future proof, it was built because it was a good thing to build. And it was built in way it could be built.

Now the question is how to prevent fascist anti-europe leaders to sabotage it. It is an important milestone. This would basically make Europe more of a federation, and I’m not sure most countries are ready yet. Even the supposedly good ones. Germany and France for example are quite fond of the power they have with the current way. Bribing Hungary is actually safer and easier than a system that could bit Germany or France back if other countries were to ally “against” one of them.

I just love every time the artillery destruction is large. They are the backbone of Russia’s doctrine. The less exist, the less skilled crew for them exist, the less Russia will be able to continue their war of conquest.

That is not to overshadow the massive Russian losses across the board today though!

Title is misleading. They are going to be building small nuclear power generators not nuclear weapons.

Buffalox, in The total combat losses of the enemy from 24.02.2022 to 18.12.2023

Massive losses all around for the Russians, but at least they didn’t lose another sub.
Numbers such as the ones we see today, seems to me to confirm that the quality of Russian forces has declined.

Valmond,

44 tanks O_o that must be some sort of record.

Either they are just getting worse (seems logic), or maybe they are trying for some advancement, like any advancement because the “generals” desperately needs one. Maybe both.

Vilian,

how much competent or well trained tank drivers they still have?

olafurp,

They’re running low on frontline skills in every way but gaining commander skill. All the guys they spent 8 years to train since Crimea until 2022 are just gone but instead they have tons of commanders/officers with real life experience.

Ulara,

The problem the Ruscists have with tank drivers is that they vanish without a trace with every turret toss of their Soviet-type tank. And they have taken down most of the Soviet training facilities and capabilities. That’s why Ruscist tank drivers often lack proper training.

olafurp,

The Avdiivka offensive is a major one, Russia is now also starting up attacks on the whole east line.

Valmond,

Yes I heard about that just now, seems they doesn’t make any progress at all (except some 20m in a field or something).
