I started a new Starsector Run with new Mods. Still in the Stage where my colonies are running a defecit and i have to make credits exploring and Bounty hunting
Learning curve for the base game is fine in my opinion. I finished one vanilla campaign playthrough and jumped into Mods afterwards. I would recommend starting with just some utility mods and one you got the hang of it add complexity via mods like nexerelin.
Chances are high that I’ll probably play the same way as you when I dive in. I usually don’t like to grab utility mods until I have a good sense of how the core systems work without them.
I’ve been wanting to try the game for a while but I’m always hesitant about any EA title. It seems like they’ve got most of the game put in place though as far as I can tell so it might just be time to take the plunge!
Hidden gem, The Witcher 3. Taking my sweet time to do everything I want, so I’m 120h in and I don’t feel like I’m too far into the main questline. That’s good, I’d like it to last as long as possible lol
I’ve been doing everything (except for Gwent) so I don’t know if I can fit a second playthrough, there are very few things I could do differently, for example focusing a bit more on Gwent, using non-witcher gear and upping the difficulty. I could also try it unmodded, but after playing with W3EE it’s unlikely that the original combat system would satisfy me. Well, it is too early to decide anyway, I estimate I should have more than 100h left, give or take haha
Modded combat adds so many layers to it and witcher contracts finally feel like proper boss fights, you need to prepare for each of them in a different way because without the right potions and oils it’s unlikely you can succeed (unless, I don’t know, you’ve beaten all Souls games with ease). The major downside of it is when you encounter large groups of enemies, because you don’t have the time to recover. Popping a potion or an oil after your first death definitely helps, though, but it breaks immersion a little bit haha
I’m still playing Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen. I’m enjoying the game more now. I thought I had finished chapter 2 but it turns out there was a lot more to do! I find the characters more interesting to play now that they’re higher levels and have more spells and gear. The story is developing more too and it’s looking good.
I’ve been playing Valheim with a buddy as well and it’s been a blast. Combat and exploring the open world are great fun. I could easily let myself get lost in this game until dawn if I wanted.
That’s rough. Honestly online play would be a selling point for me. I’ve played enough of THPS that a reskin and new soundtrack isn’t super enticing to me
Earthbound and Mother 3 could be exactly what you’re looking for. There’s just nothing quite like them OST, story, and gameplay wise.
Little Nightmares and Little Nightmares 2 also have excellent music that perfectly complement their soul-squeezing visuals and gameplay.
Portal 2 has very little music but it is GOOD, and perfectly timed to key moments in the story. Also top notch unique gameplay, obvs.
Skyrim music is iconic for a reason.
https://off.fandom.com/wiki/Downloads’s music is similarly iconic and its story and visuals so unique and engaging you’ll likely forgive it for being unapologetically RPG-maker. The latest English translation (3.0) is considered the most faithful to the original French.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/243220/FRACT_OSC/ is a “musical exploration game” where you directly influence the soundtrack by interacting with a beautiful, surreal puzzle landscape with Tron-like visuals.
OFF? WOOOW okay you definitely got me surprised over there. Half a year a I’ve tried running OFF on Linux but I just had too many issues with the compatiblity, so I left it there.
thanks to this lovely FOSS project it can be played on linux and even Android :) I’ve been playing Space Funeral on my phone with it. Actually if you like psychedelic rock, you’d probably love Space Funeral’s music too.
yeah OFF’s soundtrack doesn’t have a lot of tracks, and several are rather minimalist ambient music, but it’s all very unique and it fits the game perfectly. The main battle theme, Pepper Steak, is so catchy that my mom requested I add it to her phone as her ringtone for me 🤭
This is all going to be “great gameplay” rather than “great story”.
If you have a way to play 3DS games and a tolerance for punishment in your JRPG dungeon crawlers, the Etrian Odyssey series has some of Yuzo Koshiro’s best work.
Finally … Monster Hunter is an incredibly fun and addictive game series, and though it doesn’t center the music quite as much as a typical JRPG does, it’s got some great stuff. I particularly like the soundtrack of MH: World – although the newer game MH: Rise tried something new with its mostly choral arrangements, I think they are not quite as memorable overall.
Arena battle from Monster Hunter: World (it’s particularly impressive the way this theme, the small-monsters arena battle theme, and several of the town themes reuse the same melodies in different arrangements)
