This is my jam. Mines are super complex problems. These guys are dealing with abandoned/legacy sites which is even more challenging, since soil for reclamation is usually non-existent. The older the mine, usually the worse it is in terms of contaminants.
I wrote a paper on a mine up north that had Arsenic levels of 9,200 ppm. For reference, soil quality guides for limiting impacts to humans and the environment is 50 ppm…
So yeah, a bit of an issue.
One of the things I like that they are doing is they are using a pretty broad reveg prescription (multiple spp). This will help kick start things.
But a glyphosate-free version also killed 96% of exposed bees, they said, “demonstrating that the active ingredient, glyphosate, is not the cause of the mortality.”
Since they know that the surfactants are toxic to bees, this is like comparing pure arsensic to a mixture of arsenic and cyanide and concluding that cyanide is not dangerous.
Not really, from what I understand, it seems that life just needed a match start with the right amount of momentum in a place where the building blocks were present in abundance. There might have been false starts to life, more than once. I think the rare thing is more for the right conditions (in addition to and especially in relation to the energy source: sun) to be present for the match to spark and then the conditions must be stable enough for the momentum to keep up, like a tornado.
It’s amazing seeing a guy named “fossilesque” post a story saying we shouldn’t restore destroyed biomes in an ecology community… That they mod? Created? Haven’t checked that far yet.
Its amazing to me that both of you didnt read the article before posting. They dont say tree planting is bad, just to do it in a more evifence based manner. Just more trees is more good is an oversimplification.
This video shows an evolved approach for.the same idea that respects the people living in these zones and should be more in line with the articles goals.
