clay_pidgin,

What does this mean? Voice coaching to sing metal as the gods intend it?

Photography ended up becoming a really expensive hobby for me. I started with a phone, and then realized I enjoyed doing wildlife photography, and you need a real camera with a decent zoom lens for that.

burrito,

Sex toys. My collection is worth more than my car.

cryptosporidium140,

What’s your most expensive/extravagant one?

VicksVaporBBQrub,

As in fully functional animatronics with hapatic feedbacks, micro-hydrolics, and micro-heater elements? Oh, and whatthehay - synthetic voice? I’m guessing.

burrito,

Nothing that fancy but my wife has already expressed interest in one for threesome type situations should they become available.

burrito,

My Hismith premium sex machine is the most expensive followed by some of my Mr Hankey’s Toys such as XXXCalibur and Seahorse dildos.

ICE_WALRUS,

That’s one hell of a depreciating asset ya got there.

burrito,

Most of them are high end silicone toys from Bad Dragon and Mr Hankey’s toys and hold their value quite well. I purchased around 80% of them on the used market and can turn around and sell them for about the same amount so the depreciation hit is minimal.

HappycamperNZ,

If it a her and she’s hot its absolutely going up in value

  • burrito,

    Here’s some of them. I don’t have a full collection picture. https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/a5b662d3-3166-4093-ab10-507b831a0fcb.webp

    cordlesslamp,

    Playing racing games on PC.

At first, it’s just a few racing games with an Xbox controller.

Then it get more complicated with the more advanced racing sim/arcade and the controller isn’t enough anymore.

Then come a simple wheel and pedals set.

But now the games is way more enjoyable, then up the difficulty.

Now I need gear shifter, hand brake, better monitor, better PC.

Then not long until I need a full racing cockpit to mount everything on.

And now, after all that is just the beginning.

    pwnstar,

    What, no VR headset yet?

    cordlesslamp,

I enjoy VR games, but I can’t get into VR racing. I can’t see the wheel, the shifter so it’s hard to enjoy immersion when I had to fumbling to find a grip. I can’t see the control buttons so navigating the menu is a pain in the rear end.

    lotanis,

Similarly I lose immersion when I’m going into a corner and I struggle to see the car on my inside. That’s why I want to try VR.

I don’t play with a shifter, just paddles on the wheel (driving F4 in iracing), so I don’t think I’d have any trouble with where the controls are. Maybe the Apple Vision Pro will end up being the best racing headset though and solve your problem.

    Awall,

Preech, my simrig is the price of a modest car at this point.

    ssusuwateori,

    keyboards, F-ing keyboards

    Hoomod,

If GMK and such could stop taking nearly a year for keycaps, it would be nice

    ssusuwateori,

The turnaround time for a gmk set is much faster now. And a lot of set is in stock right, ready for you to grab.

    bleepbloopbleep,

Knitting. Only handdyed yarns, which are costly. And of course you need ALL colours. And only the most luscious fibres and yarns.

I’ve resorted to dyeing yarn myself - which opened up another deep, deep rabbit hole.

    And a business.

    schpooopy,

Came here to also say knitting! Which also lead to me spinning yarn, which lead to processing my own fleece/fibers, then dyeing….just waiting for the day I decide to buy sheep and goats

    sayabulegila,

I’m interested in said business if you want to send a dm!

    HoneyBadger,

Well I love yarn if you wanna DM that business, lol. Gotta support your habit!

    Waesche,

Music production. Started with a old pc and a pirated version of ableton. Now I bought my first top tier laptop and a license of ableton… and oh whats that around the corner? Is that a modular synth?

    CurlyChopz,

Don’t get me started on keyboards, and MIDI interfaces, and DACs, and audio monitors, and cables… And plug-ins

    flpasc,

Oh boy I know exactly where my next spare money is going… first a syntakt and after that my eurorack journey will finally begin! And I will be broke and happy!

    Waesche,

I know from the money standpoint it’s stupid as fuck, but damn i just wont the cirklon so bad!

    webPunk,

Before you get into physical modular synths, have you tried VCV Rack? It could exacerbate things for you, but it helped me avoid/delay falling into the rabbit hole of buying such hardware haha.

    archchan,

Data hoarding and self-hosting every service under the sun.

    Bakkoda,

I just spun up 3 Tdarr nodes on my proxmox cluster to tame my media collection.

    0x2d,

    Electronics repair and projects

    CallMeTHELazer,

All I need is a soldering iron… well of course it needs to be digital! I also need a DMM for troubleshooting, as well an ociliscope. Guess I should also pick up a bench power supply so I don’t need to run everything through two leads of the DMM to find the amps. A couple years laterWell this is a surface mount issue, I need a reflow heat gun.

    uis,
    @uis@lemmy.world avatar

Or go back to soldering iron unless it’s BGA

    CallMeTHELazer,

“Well I’m already upgrading to a new reflow station, I can prob also upgrade the soldering iron.”

    0x2d,

I have most of this stuff except hot air rework statoon

Was violist (played the viola) for years. It’s similar to a violin just a bit bigger and deeper. Have a true love for it… But it’s expensive to maintain after a while because it’s good to keep up private lessons, the maintenance of the instrument, and then having to buy sheet music/music books for only playing one song, one passage… I miss it… not the most expensive hobby, but got that way for me cause I am a mom of four and married… SOOOO yeah

    plactagonic,

Oh, that was the word I was looking for.

My brother made it - electric and with 5 strings. And electric guitar.

    ProperlyProperTea,

    A fellow alto clef enjoyer!

    TruTollTroll,

    Ahh my good friend!!

    HelixDab2,

My older sister was a very accomplished viola player; she was playing for the all-state youth symphony orchestra (2nd chair?) when she was 16 or 17.

Then she went to BYU, got married, had fucked-if-I-know-how-many kids (it’s at least eight), and… Just doesn’t do anything with it anymore. It’s such a damn shame. I don’t know if she could have been a professional concert violist, but she could have done more with it than she did. I have a friend that was a luthier before he had an accident, so I have a very rough idea of what a good instrument costs, and what maintenance and repairs run–and the cost of a good bow–so I know that shit’s expensive. But still.

    TruTollTroll,
    @TruTollTroll@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I get it. I was second chair for our highschool orchestra and symphonic orchestra. I also played pit orchestra for our plays. I definitely miss it… but I just don’t have time to play it like I would want… I also need to relearn to count and sight read

"Hey, with all the advances in chip technology, I bet radios are cheap now!

    “Oh.”

    thereisalamp, (edited )

    Cross stitching.

I must have $700 worth of floss a 200$ custom stand and then accessories, I just gave away 82 skeins of off brand that advertised dmc dye standards, but WEREN’T. Don’t buy floss from Amazon kids, it’s worth it to do a custom order from joanns or Michael’s mid project.

It started with wanting to do a fun little Christmas ornament project with the Littles and now I have 7 mid finished projects including a massive LOTR project I’ve restated 3 times, that has 1 of 12 8×11 pages done on this beast l nearly 3’x2’ Aida cloth.

    opensourcedeeznuts,

Film photography. Started with a camera I got for free, and $20 worth of film. Quickly spiraled into many cameras that I bought or inherited, and so much money on film and development

    Naura,

I started knitting for my kids when we were living in colorado.

so I ended up processing wool from raw fleece -> hat

raw merino fleece, raw alpaca fleece, Scouring soap, dye, dyeing classes with natalie redding, spinning wheel, drum carder, hackle, table loom, warping thing for yarn

    Math

ended up going to school for math education (with pell grant $500 per 6 month term) I can’t pass the exit exam. tried 5 times out of those I had to pay out of pocket for 4 of them $480.

and surprise, I got dxed with ADHD. That’s why I couldn’t pass the tests. now I pay $50 a month for it (doc + meds)

    LetterboxPancake,

ADHD, the cool new, costly hobby :-|

My sister has knitted since she was a kid. Later started creating fleece items. Then she bought raw wool, washed, spun and dyed it. Then bought a wooden … loom? to make carpets from it.

    HoneyBadger,

Having ADHD is indeed very expensive
