Circle of protection: white

Kjatten,

I have no idea what this game is, but that card is a little insensitive

XTornado,

Yeah man… poor yellow people.

general_kitten,

Its an old Magic the Gathering card.

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Magic The Gathering. The card had its artwork changed for that reason, if memory serves.

Black616Angel,

Well akschually it’s even worse/better?

Because crusade is on the list of cards, banned for being “racist or culturally offensive”

Other cards on this list are:

Invoke Prejudice
Cleanse
Stone-Throwing Devils
Pradesh Gypsies
Jihad
Imprison

    If we were to be true purists to any and every cultural creation, because the author had some bad viewpoint, we’d have to throw out 3/4 of it.

    Better to take hold of the creation and subvert whatever subtext the author intended it to have.

    p.s

    Took a look at the cards and can’t see where is the offensive content.

  • qyron,

    Not attempting to turn anything into anything else; just being honest.

    None of those cards have imagery that make me report to anything resembling nazism, so I’m truly baffled of where is the triggering.

    I played MTG a long time ago and that was what it was: a game based on fictional imagery.

  • qyron,

    Those hooded figures were standard fare for executioners in comic books, books and films with medieval setting when I was growing up. It takes precedence over a half dozen sideways pop culture references I only got later in my life.

    And as a curiosity: that pointed hood is still used in some religious processions in Italy today.

    Localhorst86,
    Epicurus0319,

    This might be one of the several obscure ones they banned for being in bad taste many years ago.

    SatanicNotMessianic,

    I once built one called Night of the Living Deck that was fully populated with zombie cards. It built out a cheap creature army and then relied on getting a card that turned a target land into a Swamp. Zombies had swamp walk, so at that point the entire army could march past the defenders and just wipe the opponent.

    I built it as a joke but it actually played pretty well and won a decent number of times. The best part was how angry people would get from losing to such a basic deck.

    Stalinwolf,
    @Stalinwolf@lemmy.ca avatar

    I loved my zombie deck with multiple Grave Titans and several destroy cards, but once an opponent figured out how it worked, the next deck they brought out would pretty much shut me down.

    SatanicNotMessianic,

    Oh yeah, if they know it’s coming it’s pretty easy to counter. The fun part is surprising them with a deck that’s so stupid but can still win. For me, it summed up the zombie genre.

    My strongest deck design was a control/millstone deck that just carved through everybody until Necropotence came out, and I couldn’t beat the speed on that one.

    You can probably tell it’s been a while.

    Rooty,

    Please tell me you hummed the “Thriller” song during play.

    Xariphon,

    [[Hellfire]] ?

    Kolanaki,
    @Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

    I used to have a black card that just instantly destroyed all white creature cards in play; even your own. Their numbers didn’t matter. Just their color. I called it my reverse race card.

    They could play that and just checkmate you instantly.

    SaintWacko,

    Black’s fine, that card is banned

    Mobiuthuselah,

    Is it really? I haven’t played since ice age came out; I don’t really know. I still remember having a bunch of those though

    PilferJynx,

    Is it for racist reasons? I thought the crusades were a religious conquest with religion removed most of the time.

    Mudkipology,
    @Mudkipology@lemmy.world avatar

    Yep, a few years back they banned several cards with racially questionable connotations. The most egregious of which is straight up some KKK members.

    Cthulhus_Cuck,

    Man that one is incredibly bad, I didn’t get most of the other banning but this one is very fair

    The crosses were a bit much, I think.

    frank,

    I would recommend black to castle

    pleb_maximus,

    Black should sacrifice two Pawns and play ‘Feed the Swarm’.
