I wonder why there is a high comorbidity of issues and . 🤔

I myself have had strong acid reflux since my mid twenties.

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic interesting. I had IBS until years of taking Mebevarine stopped it.

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic I'm sure my IBS, which is also a friend of fibromyalgia, is also related to my GAD - all of which is twisted up in undx'd unsupported autism and other neurodivergences.

I've heard a lot about the gut being our second brain, but haven't had a chance yet to dive into studies or the research on it.

But I'm convinced it's all connected and suspect when we're properly seen and supported the GI symptoms are less.

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic I’ve IBS - which was particularly bad in my late 20s early thirties when I was working full time and going through early menopause. Now attacks are much rarer. I also have acid reflux and take medication for that long term.

This offers some clues to the relationship between autism and IBS:

As well as melatonin, the paper mentions probiotics. I've got some relief from probiotics. I've had to try several brands before finding one that makes a real difference. As the paper hints, I find the right probiotic lifts my mood as well as taking the edge off my car-crash digestion.

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic I've often thought it was because it's a neurological condition and the gut is a neurological entity

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic Gastrointestinal issues such as reflux may be due to hypermobility/Ehler Danlos which is also highly comorbid with autism.

But that of course begs the question, why is there that comorbidity?

No-one knows, and I don't think it's much of a research priority.

I call it headcanon because it formed other than reading loads of technical papers.

I think of autism as a type of nervous system, like a blood type, but not blood. Everybody gets blood, types are heritable, some play well with others, but there are variations. The nervous system has a lot of components. Autistic comorbities are so often like, yyyup nervous system, what about... there it is, another branch of the nervous system.

As another analogy, did you know that circulatory systems carrying blood can vary among humans. There is a "normal" type and there are also variants. Perfectly healthy, perfectly capable of carrying blood where needed, but different. I only know this because one of my kids has a variant.

@Gtmlosangeles @anomalon @JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic gastro-intestinal problems may also be linked to anxiety, which is common in autistic ppl :(
Stress reduction may help to control some signs.

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic Well, i discovered later in life that i have food allergies. Also, in an effort to maintain better health i've stopped eating 'as much' junk food...i still eat it, but more moderately. Most of my gastro issues have since disappered.

I cannot speak for anyone else.
