“I don’t actually drive a Prius. I drive a Humvee with a Prius shell on top. Gets even worse gas mileage than the Humvee!”

MossyFeathers,

I’d put a Prius shell on a electric car for shits and giggles (if I had the money). Fastest Prius in the west.

MindSkipperBro12,

I want a Humvee because they’re cool.

We’re not the same.

Ilovethebomb,

I don’t think passenger comfort was a high priority when they designed and built the HMMWV, I don’t think this is a great plan.

grue,

For folks that haven’t ridden in one: they’ve got a gigantic hump in the middle for the 4WD transfer case, so the actual seats (they only seat 4, BTW) aren’t much bigger than the ones in my Miata.

Ilovethebomb,

I’m pretty sure that’s an H1, I.E the civilian variant. No way the seats are that plush on the military version.

SkyezOpen,

Yup. They have some shitty padding on plywood, also no headrest.

grue,

You’re correct. That just means it’s the best-case scenario, though, and it still kinda sucks for comfort.

MossyFeathers,

I mean, we’re talking about doing a full teardown here. The shocks are going, the engine’s going, the seats are going, basically everything except the frame, wheels, and maaaaybe transmission is gonna get thrown out.

Ilovethebomb,

Buy a Rolls Royce or a Range Rover instead.

MossyFeathers,

If you think about it, the H1, H2 and H3 Hummers were just Rolls-Royces for rednecks.

riodoro1,

So for your first car engineered from the ground up you’re gonna build a comfortable one.

I don’t wanna be discouraging but … good luck.

MossyFeathers,

Listen, I can dream okay lol? Also I have no illusions about it being a hell of a lot of work, it also wouldn’t be my first car. There are other cars I’m more interested in; doing a humvee overhaul like that would be a “I have lots of time and money” thing.

1847953620,

It’s not being engineered from the ground-up; these are all common modifications in the car guy world. The only semi-complex part will be getting the suspension custom-valved if there’s not something already available on the market for daily driving, and even that is fairly doable.

Adapting comfortable seats is a straightforward process; adding noise dampening and carpet is a straightforward process (good noise dampening material can turn almost any rattle box into something really close to if not equal to a Lexus in terms of noise). Exhausts are not voodoo, resonators and mufflers are available for virtually any conceivable application… etc

What I would wish them good luck with is not running out of steam to get it to where they want it.

vinceman,

I want to get a mid 70s to early 80s gm shitbox and turn it electric. My next vehicle will most likely be electric but no new cars interest me(especially for the price lmao), and it would be good experience for the trade I’m involved in. Too bad the rust and cars for clunkers took so many lol.

MossyFeathers,

Yeah, I also cringe at the thought that the cash for clunkers program probably claimed the lives of many cars that are valuable but were in need of some TLC. How many supras died to a crusher because they weren’t well maintained but just needed some proper care?

Ilovethebomb,

I suspect not many, the Supra has always been worth decent money.

vinceman,

If it makes you feel any better, there were people like my dad that used those cars to keep other people on the road for many years. It did increase used parts supply by a huge amount.

I want to do it to a '68 Bonneville.

So much room for batteries.

vinceman,

Dad’s got a 75 Monte that’s been sitting in a lockup for about as long as I’ve been alive, I know for a fact that big ass hood will also have batteries under it one day lol.

grue,

I wanna electrify either a Datsun 240Z or a Volvo P1800.

No room for batteries at all, LOL.

iHUNTcriminals,

One time I got tailgated by a guy in a tricked out Humvee. I followed him to his parents house.

I also live with my parents. We connected over that and had a few beers.

MossyFeathers, (edited )

Is an electric humvee that’s been modded to be comfy the same as a bear wearing drag?

Edit: you ever seen how big a humvee’s interior is? Those things have some serious potential to be Comfy. As. Fuck.

grue,

Edit: you ever seen how big a humvee’s interior is?

Yes. In terms of actual seating area, it’s surprisingly tiny (see pic in my other comment).

1847953620,

2wd conversion + chop off that center hump + new seats + lots of time, nvm

GBU_28,

Jerry rig everything built one, long YouTube series on the mods
