veloxization,

So many furries are techies so not really surprised.

veloxization,

Yup! Whenever I play in a high magic setting and want to incorporate disease, disability or death into a story, I always come up with a reason why it cannot be fixed with magic, or why the character didn’t want to/couldn’t fix it with magic.

veloxization,

I didn’t think I was a stereotype until I saw this. Yes, my bunny sona is both. :D 0d7cadd60ac1f390ac03b610f5991f6a67ad5d9a1728709447057932288

veloxization,

I guess I passively knew about furries ever since I attended an anime con that had a few attending. 2013, I think? Five years later I joined a furry community on Discord with a friend as a joke, made friends, was peer pressured into designing and drawing myself a fursona because those friends wanted to draw art for me, and now I’m a proud degenerate. 😁👍

veloxization,

I ended up just disabling the alias I use to receive emails from LinkedIn. Since I noticed I just kept deleting those emails without ever reading them, I figured I’d just opt to not receive any emails. :D

veloxization,

Non-professional artist here with a few commissions under her belt. I’ll answer from that POV.

  • I mostly draw for fun so I definitely don’t expect money for it. And you definitely can’t expect money right when you’re starting out. However, I know some people who draw as their primary source of income, which leads to most of the art they produce being for income.
  • It honestly can be either a side hustle or a full job, depending on the demand, your speed and your prices. It doesn’t have to be exhausting as a side hustle because you can adjust how much you do it considering your income doesn’t depend on it (unless your actual job barely keeps you afloat in the first place, in which case it could become a second job, which definitely can be exhausting).
  • Again, your salary depends on your demand, speed and prices. I don’t have personal experience on this because I rarely take commissions. Though even a semi-well-known artist who can work with relatively niche needs can make a few thousand (USD) a month.
  • Considering art is a luxury item, your job security will depend on the financial situation of your clients. If things like, say, a global pandemic happen and a lot of people are left struggling, you’re likely going to be struggling as well since people will of course prioritise things they actually need.
  • I feel like both “get lucky” and “get noticed” apply here. Furry art is a very saturated market these days so if you can garner an audience, you’re already in a very good place. If you get lucky by being, say, one of the first furry artists on a platform that ends up becoming popular among furries, you’re going to be noticed just because you were there before the platform got saturated. I’ve also noticed that if you can and are comfortable drawing niche art (in my case, transformation), that gets noticed a lot easier. I’d say that if you have something unique to offer (e.g. a really unique style), you’re also more likely to be noticed among the mass.
  • Fun or work, it varies. Artist friends who have made this their primary source of income say it’s fun for them. For me, it felt stressful to draw for money. Then again, I underpriced my commissions way too much when I did them so that may have been a factor (amount of work compared to amount of money didn’t feel worth it).

In conclusion, it’s a market with a lot of options for clients. I recommend, for any budding artists, to not think of art as a source of income first and foremost and just doing it because you love to create. If you can make some money or even your income from it eventually, that’s definitely an added bonus. c:

LibreWolf is a hardened Firefox also available on Linux.

veloxization,

Musk does not fuck

There’s a sentence I did not expect to read today, but kinda did expect to read someday.

veloxization,

The headstone depicted could be older.

veloxization,

I saw the first picture, thought “that’s a TF potion if I’ve ever seen one.” Opened the post and it is indeed a TF potion. :D

Goodbye Youtube and thanks for all the fish (infosec.pub)

Youtube let the other shoe drop in their end-stage enshittification this week. Last month, they required you to turn on Youtube History to view the feed of youtube videos recommendations. That seems reasonable, so I did it. But I delete my history every 1 week instead of every 3 months. So they don’t get much from my choices....

veloxization,

FreeTube is also a good option. Runs locally on your computer with Invidious API to fall back on.

Unity CEO John Riccitiello is retiring, effective immediately (arstechnica.com)

John Riccitiello, CEO of Unity, the company whose 3D game engine had recently seen backlash from developers over proposed fee structures, will retire as CEO, president, and board chairman at the company, according to a press release issued late on a Monday afternoon, one many observe as a holiday.

veloxization,

He probably has a dartboard filled with company names and wherever a dart hits, he’ll go ruin that company.

veloxization,

Well, I’ve thrown some of those screws out and THEN discovered where they fell out of. And I bet if I hadn’t thrown them out then I would have never discovered their origin.

veloxization,

I could make a joke considering the instance I’m on but I’ll just bow out.

veloxization,

I wonder what they think the smoke does. Does it magically make kids trans or something?

veloxization,

Oh, the B can also promote butt stuff so let’s remove that one as well. The L takes away from the S men so we should remove it so everyone gets an equal share. Ahhh, there we go. S. The acronym is complete.

What do you mean we’re right where we started?

veloxization,

What I did was say I’m deleting my WhatsApp account in [insert sensible time] and if anyone wants to contact me, to use Signal. Lost contact to some, but many followed.

veloxization,

I’d find it funny if in a future game that DM runs, the party comes across a group of blind and deaf adventurers fighting a group of mutant slugs or something stupid like that. 😄

veloxization,

Didn’t really use it because the scientific and medical misinformation going around on the site was tiring to see. Then Elon Musk bought it and I could see the enshittification coming up. Put up a link to my new Mastodon account, waited like a month and then downloaded my data and deleted my account.

I’m still on Mastodon. Won’t even look at Bluesky before they show they’re serious about making it decentralised. And even if that happens, I’ll still brace for the potential Google Talk 2: Electric Boogaloo.

veloxization,

I think about it along this analogy:

You ring up your artist friend and would really like to see this specific thing drawn. Your friend gets inspired and is happy to oblige completely for free as they make art for fun. You give them specifications, they send you progress pictures and you tell them how to tweak those WIP pictures until you get the piece you envisioned, drawn by this artist friend of yours.

Now, who owns the work? The artist, right? You don’t get to claim ownership just because your instructions got that piece done.

veloxization,

There’s a tool that can almost directly convert your scenes and resources to Godot.

Unidot Importer on GitHub

veloxization,

Godot was already mentioned. Someone on Mastodon brought up the Bevy Engine as well.

veloxization,

He’s still mad at those researchers for scraping the data that shows that ever since he took over, the antisemitism, racism and general bigotry has gone up on the platform.

veloxization,

You don’t need GOG Galaxy. I play my GOG games through Heroic Games Launcher on my Artix Linux system.

Path of Exile is rated Gold on ProtonDB and according to reports works out of the box through Steam Proton.

veloxization,

I can’t view my achievements so I don’t know. I assume no because there’s no overlay. I actually forgot GOG even had achievements. I just don’t care about them that much usually.

Steam achievements work normally, of course.

veloxization,

Asking others and even yourself “why?” when it comes to views is a really good thing to practise, I agree. And don’t leave it to just one layer. Ask “why?” after every single explanation and see how deep you or whoever you’re asking can get. It’s one thing to have a view and a whole another thing to know how you got to that view.

I’ve gotten out of harmful views by using this technique and realising that the only reason I held some views was because “others told me so”, which caused me to look into things more.

Of course this won’t work with really stubborn people but it’s a good start to make at least some people think.

veloxization,

Oh look. It’s Jim Pickens.

veloxization,

Personal tl;dr:

  • Affects only large platforms for now
  • Selling illegal goods is not allowed and there must be a way to report that content
  • Ad targeting based on sexuality, religion, ethnicity or political beliefs is not allowed
  • Targeting ads on children is restricted
  • Transparency on how recommendation algorithms work
  • Option to opt out of recommendation algorithms
  • Requirements for data sharing with researchers and authorities
  • Cooperation with crisis response requirements
  • Requirement for external and independent auditing

veloxization,

Now we just need companies to have their own militaries and then for someone to nuke one of their towers. We’d have the whole nine yards.

veloxization,

Which is why I am happy to have email aliases. Alias gets leaked? No problem. I’ll just delete that one and make a new one for that service. Scammers and spammers have a useless email address and I still have my clean inbox.

veloxization,

Should we tell them that there’s no karma on Lemmy? :D

veloxization,

But do you often spit on people?

veloxization,

People on the platform can generate invites at some intervals and send them to friends. That’s my understanding, while I don’t know for certain as I personally am avoiding the platform due to not trusting Dorsey at the helm. But I’m still keeping an eye on it with popcorn ready.

Or in the case of some languages:

“Oh. I forgot a return statement.”

I'm convinced Google uses its reCAPTCHA to promote Chrome

I use Firefox and Firefox Mobile on the desktop and Android respectively, Chromium with Bromite patches on Android, and infrequently Brave on the desktop to get to sites that only work properly with Chromium (more and more often - another whole separate can of worms too, this…) And I always pay attention to disable google.com...

veloxization,

I read that the “level of annoyance” (phrasing mine) has to do with your score (i.e. how likely Google thinks you are a bot). And I wouldn’t be surprised if using any browser other than ones in their ecosystem reduces your score more.

Anyway, there are other captcha systems websites could use but choose not to.

veloxization,

I made the switch and everything I want to play works. Some of it needed a bit of tweaking, though. Luckily instructions exist, and some began working with new Proton updates. It’s a good time to be a gamer on Linux.

veloxization,

Oh… Um…

how to remove stuffing from own butt

veloxization,

It’s not the government’s job to parent someone’s children… Parents should take the time to learn about how computers and the internet work at a sufficient level so they can both teach their children how to act and what to expect on the internet, and to control what their child sees on the internet. The former is a backup in case the latter does not work.

veloxization,

No problems here and I’ve used a VPN with Steam for years! Just make sure the location of your account is set to your country so you pay the correct price for your area. c:

If you already have an account, that should already be all good.

veloxization,

I switch up my pronunciation on a whim to cause maximum chaos.

veloxization,

Formerly known as Calckey. Twitter replacement similarly to Mastodon. Also uses ActivityPub.

veloxization,

Follow a lot of people to fill up your feed. Be generous with it, and if someone you followed continuously posts something you’re not interested in, you can just unfollow, or put up a filter so those posts from that person do not show up.

There’s also a feature to follow hashtags so they appear in your home feed, so just search hashtags of things you find interesting. That’s a good way to find new people to follow as well! Advanced web view also allows you to make feeds for specific hashtags or hashtag combinations for even more control.

And if you happen to find an instance catered to your specific interests, you can make an account there, and you can even migrate an existing account so your followers come with. Chances are the local feed will be filled up with content you enjoy on such an instance.

And if you want to help your followers discover similar people, be sure to boost content you enjoy.

On Mastodon, you are in control of your feeds. Even on the federated timeline, to an extent (as filters work there as well).

veloxization,

Yes. The cruelty is the point.
