I’m super excited for all the development here. I’m looking forward for Boost for Lemmy, but I’m also really enjoying wefwef (soon to be Voyager) and the active development is really exciting to me.

@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

I think they theoretically can be used well, and I’ve tried to be more reserved in how I use them here on Lemmy, but I agree often times they can become culturally toxic. I’m glad Lemmy has a better culture so far, we’re really building something great here I think.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

I follow a similar philosophy, except I do downvote the mean but not rule breaking content. While it’s not bad enough to justify removal, I do still want to discourage people being mean on this platform. For most disagreeable opinions, I’ll either move on or reply with my point of view.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Can I complain about people complaining about complaining?

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

I wouldn’t mind it, but I think a Discord-like reaction system might be better than the Reddit award system. I’m open though to either or neither.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

I think the hot algorithm here is weighted better. It pulls up brand new comments on a similar weight to older comments with hundreds of points, which makes people more likely to see and interact with new comments. The Activity and New Comments post sorts also prioritize ongoing discussions, which I think is pretty cool.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

The captcha and text prompt to join definitely helps. Having those types of simple security measures prevents people from automatically making hundreds of bot accounts, and I think is just as if not more worthwhile than verified emails for making sure that the people here are actual people.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

It’s also about search engine indexing. It’s happening slowly, but I’ve noticed Lemmy posts are finally beginning to show up in Google/Bing search results. As this trend improves, more people will stumble here by accident and then join out of curiosity.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Welcome to the community. I hope you enjoy your time here, I know I have!

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

What if you get into an accident?

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Yeah, I can tell why this is from adhddd.com, it’s all about assertiveness. People with ADHD in general (including myself, to an extent) have trouble with being assertive, so most of the phrases in this chart try to change a meek or mild-mannered response to a more assertive one. I think part of the struggle of life is finding balance because while some of these are generally improvements, others are generally worse, and the difference will depend on the tone you’re going for and the person that you’re sending the email.

“Remember Roger? I took him offline so hard he left the industry.”

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Um, I think someone may have hit you upside the head because it’s obvious and clear that my way is the best.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Yeah, this happens a lot, especially when I’m tired. Luckily, I usually leave cues for myself so that I remember what I was doing.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

With a name like @redditcunts, this one is probably a troll. Just block them.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Agreed. I’m under no delusions, when I pirate media I’m stealing. I personally don’t believe it’s immoral to steal from super corporations, especially considering how much they steal from us, but some people disagree and with these types of moral arguments there isn’t a clear right answer. Even still, I think the majority of pirates are willing to pay for software or media when the service is priced well and more convenient than piracy.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

In most cases the creator doesn’t hold the IP anymore, they signed it over to the platform. I don’t think it’s cool to pirate indy games when you can afford them because in that case the money is genuinely being withheld from the content creator, but in a lot of cases depriving Amazon of $5 for a TV show isn’t going to impact anyone.

I’m back with several more community icons: check out Artemis (future kbin app), Urban Details, 3D Modeling and some other stuff (kbin.social)

Honestly, I’ve been really enjoying making these, probably the most I’ve been excited to model something for months. So I exchanged some sleep for a faster turnaround :) Previous post here...

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

This is such cool work! I’m glad that VLemmy and KBin are federated because seeing content like this makes our greater fediverse community feel really cozy, and it’s inspiring to see the love and passion people like you are pouring into your work here.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Out of curiosity, what problems are you having with the drivers? I have a GTX 1070ti graphics card and the drivers for it have been ok on Linux, the integration hasn’t been as smooth as Windows but I haven’t had any problems.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

The quality of the posts being worse makes sense, I’m guessing some of the Reddit power users moved here and they were generating the majority of quality OC on Reddit.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Thunder and wefwef are also pretty good. I really like the gesture controls on them though, so that may be biasing me a bit.

YSK: wefwef is a web app that look very similar to Apollo and works on both android and ios (lemmy.world)

Why YSK: looks very similar and functions like Apollo, if you’re used to Apollo that’s a great app for you, even if you do not, it’s still one of the best apps for lemmy You can install the web app here: wefwef.app/settings/install or just use it on your browser here wefwef.app

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Right now all reviews are private feedback because the app is early access, but once the app doe its first full release version that will change.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Indeed. It makes sense it was laggy during the upscaling, but it’s stabilized now and it’s great to see how well Lemmy has grown. The other thing I’ve notes is development is currently proceeding at a frenzied pace, it feels like every few days a new feature is added, either in the main service or in the multitude of apps being developed.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Absolutely. I’m glad that we’re cultivating such a great community so far, hopefully it will only continue to grow and improve as time goes on.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Here’s the source for all those interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/aa4tga/yay_syu_permission_denied/. I don’t want to draw people back to Reddit, but I think it’s important to credit those I got the information from.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Block them individually. There’s no way currently to block an instance as a user.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Same here. I actually really like the swipe gestures, I think it’s one of the only things that Boost is missing.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Yes, Sync for Lemmy has been confirmed to be in development. It has its own community and a channel on the Sync discord.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

It was a sudden switch. My guess is he was on the fence and outpouring of support and donations from his goodbye announcement post pushed him over the fence. I’m thrilled of course, Boost was my favorite Reddit app so I look forward to trying the Lemmy version.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

I love to see the growing numbers. The larger the numbers the more communities will be filled and the better the engagement will be.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Because the goal was to ban third party apps and they don’t want people trying to dodge it. u/spez seems to be personally offended by their existence and wants them gone.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Yeah, I think this is done to provide the illusion of choice. The rate limits are high enough to allow personal emails through, but for any mass emails or corporate emails this forces you to use Google. Unfortunately a standard corporate strategy, it’s why corporate office suites are so generic and tend to be from one of the big companies.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

It’s good to see the rapid development. Lemmy is very quickly developing a thriving ecosystem.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Indeed, the swipe actions are really nice. Wefwef and Thunder also have them, but they from what I can tell don’t have a page for my saved posts/comments, so right now Connect’s my favorite.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

I definitely am. I may have more comments and posts here than on Reddit already and I have only been here a fraction of the time.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Yeah, this place sort of just has a better spirit right now. I hope it’s able to hold onto this vibe as it grows.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

I don’t use SteamOS, but there work for Linux gaming is undeniable. Proton does an excellent job running the majority of games, and the Steam Linux client runs very well.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Greg is determined, and is willing to see his vision through. Maybe you should respect Greg?

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Our first obscure piece of Lemmy lore. May there be many more into our future.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

This is a really good idea, hopefully it will pull more people to our communities.

@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

I figured I'll write up a tldr on Embrace, Extend, Extinguish in case you aren't really feeling reading the articles.

Embrace: Meta builds a federated Twitter/Reddit alternative, potentially called Threads but is right now P92, that follows the ActivityPub standard almost perfectly. Various Lemmy and KBin instances federate with them and share information. Users from Facebook and Instagram flood into P92, making it one of the largest instances.

Extend: P92 starts adding nice, but proprietary features to their system. The allure of these features begins drawing users off of other instances to P92. Those instances are upset, but Meta insists it's doing nothing wrong, continues to follow the ActivityPub standard in some form, and tells the other instances to just implement the features themselves.

Extinguish: Meta announces that due to incompatibility, they are withdrawing from the standard and defederating from everyone. Most users of this software are now on P92, and thus don't mind. Meta gets a fully populated Twitter/Reddit alternative, and the remaining ActivityPub instances wither. Without user support, the standard fails, and a new open source alternative is created to replace it.

That strategy has been used to kill other open source protocols, and many people are worried it will happen again. My personal opinion is that servers should only federate with Meta if they follow the standard perfectly, and if they deviate even a little bit they should be universally defederated via software changes, but I'm sympathetic to the people that would rather be proactive than reactive.

Daniel Supernault (creator of Pixelfed) is creating an open source Kbin app. This is massive! (mastodon.social)

Decided I'm going to go ahead with my Kbin mobile app. Yeah I know i have a lot on the go, but I use Apollo daily, and want a solid Apollo like experience for Kbin. I'm willing to hand over the project to Kbin if they want, and would love to work closely with the developer on this if possible. Will be starting this next week,...

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Great to hear! All of the new apps will enrich the ecosystem and bring more federated content to everyone.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Honestly, we're a minority of users and if we just left the only thing Reddit would notice is that posts were lower quality, and it's possible they wouldn't notice that at all. Going out loudly draws publicity to Reddit alternatives, and I think that harms them more in the long term.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Ah yes, I'm sure mass firing mods and replacing them with random assholes will be very good for the Reddit community.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

It’s exciting to see all these apps ramping up development. Honestly, the greatest gift that Reddit gave to the fediverse is sending all their former third party developers here, because that will greatly accelerate development.

thesanewriter,
@thesanewriter@vlemmy.net avatar

Essentially yes, that’s what we need. Unfortunately, that type of functionality is still limited, though I hope with the more advanced third-party apps on the way we’ll get a sort of pseudo-support for it in the mean time.
