spongebue,

Funny, I used to use “Router? I hardly know her!” and eventually changed it (for reasons I can’t remember) to “TellMyWifiLoveHer”

spongebue,

I should be the first to get one of these, but I live in a split-level house. Until they can climb and clean stairs, probably not worth the hassle.

One of these months I’ll get around to using the vacuum I do have…

spongebue,

That show was wonderful though

spongebue,

I love Happiest Season! It’s got such a dumb, quirky humor to it that always cracks me up.

spongebue,

So clickbait trash is fine as long as you agree with it?

Elon Musk gives X employees one year to replace your bank - ‘You won’t need a bank account... it would blow my mind if we don’t have that rolled out by the end of next year.’ (www.theverge.com)

“If it involves money. It’ll be on our platform. Money or securities or whatever. So, it’s not just like send $20 to my friend. I’m talking about, like, you won’t need a bank account.”...

spongebue,

Hopefully he puts all his assets into this and the trainwreck quickly rusts away with it.

spongebue,

Maybe I’m just a guy with hardly any imagination, but I like this community to see spatial trends, historical map information, and stuff like that. Maps of some fantasy something-or-other with no relation to the world I live in doesn’t really interest me.

spongebue,

My friend’s pit bull got attacked by a Chihuahua and had no idea what to do about it except sulk all day after it was over. To me, blaming pit bulls for violence is like blaming BMWs for not using turn signals

spongebue,

So he’s got a lot of catching up to do

spongebue,

I was thinking Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia. Technically more like 15 minutes going through Hagerstown, MD but I’m not even from the area and just have a fascination with border quirks

spongebue,

Yes! My favorite part is that when they realized that it was south of the 49th parallel, Britain tried to see if they could just have it. Obviously that didn’t happen.

Also, look up Angle Inlet.

spongebue,

I was getting similar SXM vibes, but easyJet is a British airline with only A320-ish jets that goes around Europe and nearby (Northern Africa and such).

I suppose their A321 could probably get there from London though…

spongebue,

And whoever happened to be in their path

spongebue,

I love my EV. There are still reasons to have an ICE car (not knowing what OP has, but generally speaking) and frankly, comments like yours are not going to convert anyone

spongebue,

So like… do you want to say anything more than “I’m right and this is wrong”? Because I’ve seen that video before and I’m still feeling the opposite way you are

spongebue,

I was a geography/computer science double major, so of course I took all the GIS classes that I could. It was a lot of fun to play with!

spongebue,

A few days, even. My Bolt’s battery isn’t huge and holds about 60kwh, and a normal outlet only gives about a kilowatt (so you’d be looking at about 60 hours of charging). Granted, you don’t have to go from 0 to 100 if you only need (for example) 30% to get to a fast charger a few towns over, and you can maybe get by on even less if there’s a level 2 (220V) in between, but level 1 (normal outlet) is really meant for people who don’t drive that much and/or are often home. Not road trips.

But to a normal outlet’s credit, you can easily get about 40 miles of charging overnight on a smaller car. That’s over 14,000 miles per year, which is a little above average for most drivers

spongebue,

Then they can pay their employees more for the trouble as a whole. Which is what generally already happens for employers in high cost of living areas anyway.

spongebue,

If someone enjoys driving more than their actual job, and they’re getting paid to do it, it’s arguably an incentive. At the very least, you’re no longer decentivizing the commute by paying for it.

spongebue,

They still do! It can work better for some than others. Some people have gotten ridiculously inflated quotes for a non-standard (only covered for $1K) installation for dumb reasons. That said, my panel is on the other side of my house but the ~50’ run was still covered in full. Local installer was amazing to work with. And I’ve got more charging power than I know what to do with.

Keep in mind that the EVSE itself is the easy part. If you get the wiring in, you can always swap the box later on.

spongebue,

I’ll take it over women being almost universally assigned to the kitchen, whether they like it or not. Today’s being your kids to work day was once called bring your daughter to work day, in an effort to get women in the workplace. I’m all for furthering our work culture change (without going full antiwork) but at least this is a step in the right direction to show that women can be more than a housewife.

spongebue,

My understanding is that level 2 street charging is growing. They also do things a little differently in that rather than having a cord at each station (prone to theft/vandalism) drivers carry their own cord that plugs into the station and the car.

Another thing to consider is that people driving within the city probably don’t cover much distance. Depending on pricing vs gas, 15 minutes at a fast charger every week or two may be enough to get by and worth it.

Housing density and the things it comes with are absolutely a factor. But maybe not an insurmountable one.

Why is everyone so giddy about the flooding thay happened at burning man?

Social media seems to be laughing its ass off about this tragedy, is it because the folks at burning man are perceived as frivolous hippies or something? Everyone I’ve ever met who was a regular burning man attendee has been a solid human being with strong morals, personally and financially responsible, a career. Upstanding...

spongebue,

Fine, but calling it a tragedy takes away from actual tragedies.

spongebue,

The word “literally” used to have a specific meaning, but now it annoyingly has the exact opposite meaning of its original. The word “pentultimate” was supposed to mean “second to last” but then it turned into “super-ultimate”

No one anything changes the word… Until it does. It would be nice if words can keep their meaning without getting diluted so when you really need it, you have it.

spongebue,

Come to Denver, where 1 in 10 cars don’t bother with license plates and half are temp tags that are at least a year expired

spongebue,

It doesn’t matter which algorithm is used. Somebody will crack it and abuse it for their own good.

If the algorithm gives a bigger shit about giving the answer people are actually looking for, and doesn’t emphasize length, formatting, and other bullshit… And people crack the algorithm by giving exactly that answer I’m looking for, I’d be ok with that.

But it all starts with the algorithm

spongebue,

For sure a plea of guilty/not guilty. There are generally other logistical formalities, such as terms of release prior to trial. Some of this has been pre-negotiated between the two sides, like Trump’s bond has already been set. In theory a judge doesn’t have to agree, but it’s pretty rare that they get in the way when the two sides (prosecution/defense) are good on a certain point.

spongebue,

Is it really that hard to write the word “north”? Is that even what nth is supposed to mean? I keep reading it as the mathematical “1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th…, nth” and it makes my head hurt

spongebue,

cost per unit

This right here answers your own question. The word “per” implies division in math. Cost per unit = cost divided by units. If cost is $20, and units is 200, that means you have $20 / 200 = $0.10.

Similarly, 150 miles per 2 hours is 150 miles / 2 hours = 75 miles / 1 hour = 75 miles per hour

Other math vocabulary hints: and means addition (3 and 5 is 8) and of means multiplication, typically with a fraction (half of 6 = 1/2 * 6 = .5 * 6 if you prefer = 3

spongebue,

Eh, it’s a civil settlement. It was never supposed to be a punishment (it wasn’t brought by the government) and pushing for something higher brings its own risks - including the possibility that the legal costs of chasing outweighs what would be paid.

It’s not exactly a secret that Spirit charges for bags. While some people are only getting refunded a portion of what they unexpectedly paid, many are getting an unexpected partial refund of a fee they planned on paying

spongebue,

Doesn’t explain those who have been out of school for quite some time now

spongebue,

As someone who is looking into new blinds for the house… Mind telling me who that was? 😅

spongebue,

I’ve been to the middle east (Oman). So many malls there for basically that exact reason. And a friend of mine grew up in Bahrain and said the same.

American Airlines sues Skiplagged, claiming cheap tickets are ‘classic bait and switch’ (www.dallasnews.com)

“Skiplagging” — or booking a flight with a layover to skip the last leg of travel — is a common hack for travelers who don’t want to pay for a direct flight or who to save money on airfare to a connecting destination. Airlines contend the practice results in lost revenue for seats on planes.

spongebue,

That’s basically standby travel. Which is a thing for irregular operations (storms and such for missed flights) and someone trying to get on a same-day earlier flight, but generally you can’t book yourself as a standby passenger on a full flight from the get-go. So the flight wouldn’t even show up as an option when you search for it.

spongebue,

Two one-ways. Your origin would have to be the city you want to fly from, as missing an earlier flight generally means your ticket gets cancelled.

This can be a little difficult flying from, for example, Denver to Albuquerque. There probably won’t be many cheaper flights if you add Albuquerque to Los Angeles or Houston or something, but Albuquerque to Denver may be cheaper if you had a connection to Las Vegas or something.

spongebue,

It is, but it’s actually done pretty well that they usually don’t need to pull anyone off the plane. They also reduce how much they overbook by as departure time comes closer

spongebue,

Chains aren’t necessarily popular because they’re great, but because they’re accessible and predictable.

spongebue,

What cut of meat do you use to get that “greasy but in a guilty pleasure way” taste, how do you prepare it, and how convenient is it when we are in the middle of a busy day or driving through Iowa on I-35 and need something to eat around Dows?

spongebue,

I like Arby’s curly fries just fine, especially when fresh, but to be honest there’s something about the Kroger brand curly fries you can get in the freezer that slaps. I think it’s because the potato is a lot more prominent.

spongebue,

It became a platform in which the whole world communicated about anything and everything. Maybe it still is to an extent, but knocking down the world’s platform plank by plank isn’t an absurd thing to write about

spongebue,

I grew up with title case being a thing ☹️

spongebue,

If I had to spitball an answer, I’d say the value of an innovation increases as it improves on existing similar things, and decreases as it worsens from them.

I don’t see any benefit to crypto for sending money, and introducing a new, volatile currency backed by people’s imagination is a detraction to me.

spongebue,

Hello! Not sure if you’re an admin or anything exciting on that instance, but I have a hobby restoring antique radios (personally, my favorites are from the 1940s) and I’ve been meaning to start a Lemmy community for that. It’s a little different than the stuff on retrolemmy now, but maybe that would be a decent fit? Happy to keep it on the major instances, but I like the idea of helping each instance keep some kind of theme!

spongebue,

Done! I’ll try and create more posts soon 🙂

spongebue,

Thanks! Posting here was on my to-do list, but by the time I got this far it was way past my bedtime 😉
