A heat wave that has stifled the southern tier of the U.S. for weeks has expanded into the Plains, Midwest and now the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Thursday, triggering heat alerts for over 227 million people, according to the National Weather Service.
The Republican party has led the initial charge, with a series of claims about extraterrestrial life that, until recently, would have been seen as career-ending.
LOL, more distraction from one party’s inability to do their freaking job. It’s funny that 1) alien visitors cross unfathomable distances using what must be technology far, far, in advance of anything we have, yet “crash” and 2) These “crashes” only happen in the US, or the US quickly swoops in to take all evidence of this from foreign countries.
tl;dr Americans are so self-centered and narcissistic it’s painful at times.
It’s not really a big deal, but I am currently writing this using a linux kernel I compiled from source, which certainly feels like an accomplishment. The Arch Wiki has made the process fairly easy to follow. I just took the stock Arch Linux configuration without changes for now....
That just brings me back to starting the compile, getting something to eat, doing chores, and whatever else. Then when it was finally done, booting it up only for it to not boot because I forgot some checkbox. Repeat a couple of times. Nights getting the thing working. And then on the next kernel release, trying to make sure I remembered all the checks because it didn’t let you export the current config back then.
A friend of mine is a musician. About a decade or two ago I went over to his house and he said that he had to get a new fan to fix his computer. I asked him what was going on, so he turned it on and I heard that tick-tick-tick of the read head. I had to let him know it was his hard drive. He had a lot backed up, but not everything, and not the stuff he’d been working on the past couple weeks. Just a bummer. But he did set up a backup program after that.
Apple has deployed a system called Private Access Tokens that allows web servers to verify if a device is legitimate before granting access. This works by having the browser request a signed token from Apple proving the device is approved. While this currently has limited impact due to Safari’s market share, there are concerns...
If a website doesn’t want me to see their shit, then I guess i won’t see their shit. I already have some sites that don’t work because of my aggressive use of lists on my pihole, in addition to the usual browser plugins. If a site doesn’t work now, I just move on. I don’t give a shit about any site enough to put up with this type of bullshit.
Use the phone app or, oh I don’t know, fucking go in?
Or email provider?
Change your email provider? Run your own email like people should?
Or literally anything else you actually have to choose and can’t pick? “It’s okay because I don’t think it affects me / I can ignore it” is always a bad reason to allow a bad thing happen.
When the fuck did I say that? I said I’m not going to deal with it. I won’t. I’ll work around it, or change the company I’m using. That is what you need to do to stop this type of shit.
EDIT: Holy crap some people are stupid. Register a domain <whatever>.com. You don’t even need to host a website. Now configure the register to point to your mail server. I’ve done this for decades, across different carriers. And I haven’t lost my email.
Or don’t do any of that and happily bend over and take whatever Apple or Google force on you. You do you.
What’s your opinion? Does google really “not work” anymore? Are there any better search engines? Why did the quality of search results go down? I honestly stumbled onto this question through this music video, what is ironic in it’s own way i feel…
I have a fairly large music collection, which is 9.9 GB in size. It’s mainly made up of MP3 files, with some OGG Vorbis files and a handful of WAV and WMA files. I would like to convert the entire library to AAC (or a better format, if there is one) in order to reduce the size of my collection by a considerable amount....
As the title says, I got tired of hearing about twitter and reddit so provide this userscript a comma separated list of keywords and you will no longer see posts containing those keywords. I’d love to see this functionality built into Lemmy itself, but until then here’s a userscript....
I love the idea. It’s not working for me. Violenmonkey, firefox, Linux, for what it’s worth. I’ve been wanting something like this since I started using Lemmy.
I like this! Thanks for posting. I don’t know anything about compiling an add-on, but it looks like it would be super easy to update the list (add twitter or reddit as things to block any mention of). So I guess my question is, how easy is it to just edit github.com/aCosmicWave/…/blocktherich.js to update the add-on?
Yeah, that’s what I said. I just don’t know how hard it is to recompile or whatever and use it. I guess that’s a learning path I’ll have to go down. Probably not hard, I know basic programming.

It depends on the instance you signed up with. Mine, and it looks like yours, doesn’t have downvotes. It’s the host’s decision. Annoying at times like this, huh?

Although for the most part I have grown to appreciate the lack of possiblility to downvote on the instance I use, it really does get in the way of community self-regulation. I understand the argument that downvotes can, and have, led to echo chambers and piling on, but there has to be some middle ground.
Not to mention how easy it is to yt-dlp a playlist and have it for offline. It blows my mind what people are willing (or really able) to waste money on.
I think I’ll add The Archive Undying by Emma Mieko Candon to my stack of to-be-read books. I think it was Michael Silverblatt (Host of Bookworm on NPR until 2022) who said,“There are so many great books. What is more rare is great readers.” I used to consider myself a great reader. Or at least good. I received a BA in English Lit from a top tier University and loved reading and analyzing heavy, dense, beautiful prose and stories. It seems the past half decade or so, I only want to read lighter stuff for pure entertainment and escape. Not Marvel movie levels of vapidness, but still. I’m not sure how I feel about this state of being.
Nope. Death is a possible sentence for treason (while no less than 10 years in jail at a minimum). Insurrection sentencing is not more than 10 years and a fine.

In the past, when there was a much higher tax on high income earners, instead of paying more in taxes, they would spread the wealth a little more equitably. This was true in Hollywood, in corporations, hell, in working service industry jobs. There were still rich, but so were others. In the past 40 years, we have been experiencing the greatest wealth transfer (over $50 fucking trillion ) from the working class to the 1% ever. And it’s poised to get worse. Anyone who doesn’t support unions and a strongly progressive tax is either ignorant of the history of the US, or an asshole. There is no in between.
The waitresses said they make the federal minimum wage for tipped workers, which is $2.13 per hour. The intention is that the bulk of their income will primarily come from tips. Schoolmeester-Cochran estimated she works anywhere from 21 to 35 hours each week and, with tips, brings in a salary ranging from $70 some weeks to $170 others. <-- Waffle House employee

Not to mention fantastic spending on college/university (GI Bill) to both slow the impact of returning military on the job market and to create a highly educated work force. Also, incredible help for people to become homeowners, creating generational wealth (GI Bill again), unless you were black.
People act like high taxes on the wealthy would be a problem, when in reality what happened is the wealthy poured more of the excess wealth into their businesses, which benefitted everyone. It’s so annoying that we freaking know what works and what doesn’t (trickle-down), yet still argue about their efficacy.
