Vaporents finally made it to the Fediverse? Nice!

Yep, this is the best available right now.

Official Unixporn Community on LemmyWorld (lemmy.ml)

Hey all! Mod team of r/unixporn here. After a couple weeks of work on our end, we finally have a Lemmy community at LemmyWorld that we’re committing to moderating in the long run. Additionally, due to Lemmy’s federation, you should be able to crosspost between here and there even if you don’t have an account on LemmyWorld....

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

Why are you moving instance? And why to an already packed instance?

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

Slack as Supreme is nostalgia. At least your Fedora ranking is logical.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

What? What? What? Okay! What? What? What? Yeah!

How would share buttons work given lemmy is federated (vs a unique instance)? (lemmy.world)

For example in the screenshot (twitch clip), if you want to share on reddit you click the reddit button, but what button are devs supposed to put to share in the fediverse? Do they pick an instance of their choice?! Is this a weakness of a federated platform or what?

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

Not sure if you remember an extension called Tumblr Post, you’d log in and then you could share to Tumblr. I’m guessing that’s the only real way short of registering a protocol.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

how do you do a cross post? I’m trying to cross post this to !datingredflags

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

Okay, so turns out you can just press the copy button that’s available on the web interface and it kinda does it for you, with the attribution link. Yes, it took me two days because I was worried I would mess it up 🥺

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

This is so good!

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

How often do this update? There’s a bunch of new communities missing

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

My home instance, lemmy.tf isn’t even included 🥺

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

Last update of lemmy.tf was Wednesday, let’s hope it grabs it again in the next sweep.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

This is awesome. I think it’s better to have a separate mastodon and Pixelfed, but this is good for the majority of people.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

@MishaalRahman is probably the best person to explain. But it essentially means things should run a little faster.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

Capitalists gonna try and capitalise. I’ve seen lots of people try and create services like this for mastodon.

Great post BTW.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

Nope they won’t be deleted. They’ll be orphaned though.

That said, people should more from lemmy.world, not to it. 🥺

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

metapixl.com has a nice URL and is seldom down. That said, it’s not the most active, so you’re likely to get traffic via hashtags rather than locally.

Edit: just seen they’re launching pixelfed.com as the default instance later this month, so that might be worth a wait if you want lots of foot traffic.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

That is the case, but in the pixelfed app, you essentially get 3 timelines, federated which shows everyone across all instances, local which shows people on your instance and following which shows the people you’re following.

(Controversial) Should lemmy.world close registrations at a certain user count?

To support decentralization and spread, should lemmy.world close registration at some point to prevent a performance overload due to too many users? Of course, if registration is disabled, there could be a hint placed somewhere near that from other instances you can interact with content on lemmy.world just like you had...

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

I think it should redirect users to other instances. But ultimately, we need account migration like mastodon.

@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

Looks like a dude with a goatie. Awesome!

reddit immigrant question

Hello there, happy to be here and leaving reddit. Trying to figure out lemmy.world and fediverse through jerboa and I have a question. In the comments I see some comments with a red, green or light blue line on the left side. I haven’t figured out its meaning from any pattern yet, and google didn’t help. Can someone explain...

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

I believe it’s something akin to this. Give it some time for things to federate.

Does federation need a rethink?

I think the way federation currently works spells doom for the fediverse, should any service of it get major traction. Currently, if you subscribe to a community on Lemmy or follow a user on Mastodon, your instance will pull the content of that instance/user and make it available for all to see and interact with. What seems like...

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

It’s not bad design though. What it does is make users, like you and myself responsible for our user experience. If you want a server that allows everything find one, if you want a conservative one, find one. If content creators want to join the server with the biggest reach in order to peddle their wares, fuck them. The fediverse is about communication not validation. It’s why so many companies find themselves defederated on mastodon before they get started. Your mindset is that numbers equal success and everything should be just like it was, but mastodon doesn’t want to be Twitter and Lemmy doesn’t want to be Reddit. In the same way that those two companies are flushing their services down the toilet, the fediverse protects against that by leaning into the idea that once it’s on the Internet, it’s there forever. There’s nothing wrong with expecting users to form relationships of trust with their admins and taking responsiblity for how that manifests

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

You can’t, yet. There’s a lot of basic options missing, which is fair given that the developers for jerboa are also the developers for lemmy. There’s only so much time in a day.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

You and me both

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

Are you seeing new content in the community? Because you might just be on an instance that’s been defederated.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

I hope they all go to PixelFed.
