The Fediverse has a Mental Health Problem (scribe.rip)

This is a very interesting article about the long-term sustainability of the Fediverse for moderators, administrators, and developers. We’ve already had two of our lovely Beehaw admins take breaks to take care of themselves as they experience the burnout associated with maintaining a community, and I think for a lot of use we...

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

The whole planet has a mental health problem. Was discussing this earlier in another community with a German user.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

I think even before that, there were major issues. The pandemic just made it so we couldn’t ignore them any longer. Which is ridiculous given how much people were acting out. But now everyone is aware of how important it is, because so many were trapped with their own thoughts and/or monotony. Even so, our governments paid lip service and then failed to make meaningful changes. My government cares more about getting people back into the office than making sure mental health care is accessible to everyone.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

Capitalism is shit. We’re brainwashed to believe that there’s only so much and we have to get as much as can and before everyone else, damn the cost, even if it’s our mental health. I don’t understand how we can’t look at it from the other angle and say, if there’s only so much, let’s protect it. Let’s share what we have so everyone can have fun. Let’s care about everyone and lift everyone up.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

The thing is, there’s so many people that want to help and can change things. But they just don’t have the access. For my grandparents, University was free and then when those people graduated, they slapped a charge on it. So we have less people able to afford to study it, let alone do the job where their open salary is now less than McDonalds. It’s so stupid.

Always try and lead with the compliments and only burn them after. Like a sweet curry laced with Scotch Bonnet.

Also in those communities where they have a mentality of them against the world, make sure you use we and us. Talk as if it’s something you want to solve together as a community, not something you’re expecting others to solve like an entitled person.

Chin up friend, you’ll have some setbacks, but your goodwill is appreciated.

I would like to help an open-source project with UI design and UX design. I have over 18 years of experience in the field and have worked with desktop and mobile software on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and Windows Mobile/Windows Phone. Unfortunately my knowledge of Linux is very limited but I'm eager to learn. Could you help me find a project? @thelinuxEXP @linux @macrumors @windowscentral @windows

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

These are really Linux, but these Android projects need some UX assistance if you’re at all familiar with Material Design.

This advice is pretty universal. First things first, install the app and get familiar with. Then write down all the ways you believe that the app could improve. Then break the list down further to figure out what are the goals and how they’re obtainable. Check those new list items against the Material You guidelines. After that, your list should be smaller, items that can be grouped together, should be. Figure out if you need to make a mockup to help illustrate your advice. And then create issues on the project GitHub, the more the better. Afterwards, shoot the developer a private message or email and explain that you’re a UX designer and you’re hoping that you can contribute in a meaningful ongoing manner.

There’s a few lemmy open source iOS clients, I suggest finding the one you like the most. There’s some listed here, just scroll down to the iOS section: lemdro.id/post/4319

As I said elsewhere

There are certain things that are memory intensive and CPU intensive. If you have 10k on one server doing that it really adds up. However having them across a wide range of smaller servers, its not such a big deal.

As a user, you literally lose out on nothing not being on lemmy.world. You can partake in all the same conversations, communities and everything. In fact when lemmy.world is down, you can still see everything and when it comes back up, your posts will synchronize. There’s genuinely no upside to being on lemmy.world. That’s the way the system was designed.

Not sure people will listen though. I will always talk up the amazing admin I have on lemmy.tf, but it’s also worth mentioning that I have a bunch of communities hosted on other instances and each and every one of them is amazing.

mastodon.art defederating calckey firefish social. Cites behavior of lead project dev (dotart.blog)

mastodon.art has decided to suspend firefish.social from their instance due to issues with its administrator. The administrator of firefish.social was found to be boosting posts from a known harasser on another instance. mastodon.art takes a firm stance against racism and suspending full instances in these situations is part of...

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

So I just went down the rabbit hole on this one and its a crazy situation. Basically .art is defederating FireFish.social because they don’t defederate another instance. But the FireFish admin appears to have doctored some screenshots. It just seems immature as fuck. Especially considering the thing that the .art admin was made about happened over a year prior.

Stack Overflow has a CEO? WTF for? It’s a repository of information. All the LLMs have already ripped a copy of the site, so where were they planning to generate revenue?

I hope someone starts a version and integrates it with activitypub and then users can donate towards the hosting costs.

Stack Overflow is supposed to be the wiki of developers, not a fucking business. I hate these greedy fucks. “let’s make money from other people’s time and effort” 🤮🤮🤮
