On November 16th, Meredith Whittaker, President of Signal, published a detailed breakdown of the popular encrypted messaging app’s running costs for the very first time. The unprecedented disclosure’s motivation was simple - the platform is rapidly running out of money, and in dire need of donations to stay afloat....
Mitch Hedberg is one of the greatest comedians of all time. I loved his material, but he had some serious drug issues. I saw him 6 months before his death and he was totally trashed. He told maybe 5 jokes during his show. The rest of the time he was wobbling all over the stage and just acting like a drugged/drunk mess.
America can endure 20 years of war in Afghanistan in a war it shouldn’t be fighting, but can’t get past two years merely supporting one it should be fighting? War fatigue is bs. America loves war. It is just led by corrupt politicians that don’t have the values to know which wars it should fight.
Well, rate is good and though I felt we paid a high price at the time, we’ve actually built a lot of equity in a short time. In hindsight the price was low.
That said, inventory was really limited in 2020, so we had to compromise on location a bit.
I’d like to move to a different neighborhood, but now prices and interest rates are higher. To trade up, I’d be paying 2-3x what my current mortgage payment is.

I think the solution here would be for the judge to go after Trump’s lawyers. From the article they’re engaging in some of this behavior themselves, in addition to encouraging it in Trump. But, they want the optics of Trump getting imprisoned in order to play victim and try to help an appeal. Seems the judge could side step that and go after the lawyers instead, who have more to lose.
oh yeah, check the post history, some how Margot Robbie is an expert in programming IDEs: lemm.ee/comment/5424323
Pretty sure this is some Linux nerd running an elaborate joke. Nothing in Margot Robbie’s bio, or interviews suggest a background or interest in programming.
Agree. HBO is some high class, quality shit. Max is meaningless. I guess it corresponds with the CEO of Discovery channel coming in to wreck HBO in the same way he did Discovery.
"the company looked at the history of social media over the past decade and didn’t like what it saw… existing companies that are only model motivated by profit and just insane user growth, and are willing to tolerate and amplify really toxic content because it looks like engagement… "
I like Mozilla, I respect their mission and their good nature. I can’t help but feel the billions they receive from Google make it too easy for them to be, at best, unfocused and, at worst, lazy. They offer a lot of random services like this. I fear this play is just chasing another possible mediocre revenue generator for them. Like pocket, like Mozilla vpn and private relay, etc.
I want to create a few internet alter egos, one for shopping, one for communicating with family, and one for communicating with friends. My goal is to make these accounts the least trackable to advertisers and political parties....
Use NextDNS to block ads and trackers at the dns level. Use it on your smart phone and also consider it at the router level for your home devices. Or, get a VPN like IVPN that lets you set your NextDNS profile as your VPN DNS. Then, get a router that lets you funnel your router traffic through the VPN.
Reddit is talking about hiding Reddit from Google. I hope they do that because it will let Lemmy start to replace Reddit as the go to source for non-SEO, real-human answers.
As a new junkie, I love News+. It’s got a lot of content with no paywalls. Also they have audio articles, so you can listen to long form stories like an audiobook. Great for the car.
Ultimately, I think the plan is worth it, especially with family members being able to use it too. Some use Fitness, some use TV+, some use News, all use iCloud+. Music is good to have, even though most of us use Spotify.
I do wish they offered some ala cart option so that I could opt out of the services no one uses and still save a little money with a discounted rate.
What a ridiculous comment. Not everyone has your needs and half your gripes aren’t even based on factually correct information. It doesn’t even sound like you use Apple products, so why are you here? Just dropping in to show your ignorance?
Apple Music is pretty similar to Spotify. That’s an established business model and the price is pretty much the same between the two. Apple Arcade isn’t unlike other subscription game services, also an established business model. News+ is a new thing, but offers a lot of convenience with no paywalls and hours of long form articles in audio format. Worth it for that alone.
If all you want to pay for is iCloud+ and TV+ because you don’t value the other services, then you can do that for $20/month, not $38.
And, no you do not need to pay for Apple Fitness to use your Apple Watch and “get your metrics.”Fitness+ is video workout classes for people who want to use that. Otherwise, the watch works perfectly fine to “get your metrics.” Go for a run, jerk yourself off, it’ll measure your heart rate, “lifetime data for free.”
But, tell me more about how instead I should subscribe to Photoshop, which I don’t even use, and get 4TB of cloud storage, which is more than my entire family needs. If I did want 4TB, though, I could also get that for $20/month. So, why are you complaining again?
Yeah, I find the placeholder a bit annoying too. I guess it’s probably intended to make you aware that you’re creating your own news bubble. That was a criticism of Facebook… that its algorithm was not even showing content/perspectives in one side of the political spectrum to people on the other side. And vice versa.
Also, News+ ads are easily blocked by a DNS-level ad blocker like Pihole or, the cloud-based one, NextDNS.
No renting at all? Why buy a home then? You’re just setting yourself up to become trapped in a bad situation. If you don’t have the flexibility to rent out your property when you get a new job somewhere else, or lose your job and can’t cover the mortgage, then you’ll either be foreclosed on or forced to sell possibly at a loss. Remember, when you buy a property, you are immediately under water due to selling costs of 6-8% of the property’s value.
Let’s picture this scenario:
You buy a house for $300,000
You lose your job a month later and cannot afford the mortgage. Your options are:
sell your house, which will cost $24,000 in selling costs (seller/buyer agent fees), and since your property was bought only a month ago, you don’t have any equity and would have to sell at a loss. Since you lost your job, you have no more money to lose.
wait for the bank foreclose on you
try to hang on to the property by renting it out until you can get back on your feet
If renting isn’t an option, this rule would create a lot of problems for people. The solution isn’t to regulate what people do with their own property more, but to build more housing supply. Your idea would disincentive building housing because it can’t be rented unless you’re in that special 5%.
Edit: Guaranteed everyone downvoting me has never owned a property and has not a clue what the stakes are.
I don’t even use Facebook. In this case, I’m not even receiving any services from them, so they should so stop spying on me. If their answer is “pay us $10/month anyway,” which it seems to be then Facebook is more of a protection racket than a legitimate business.
In 2007, Canada started requiring all vehicles to have a cheap, effective anti-theft device. The U.S. didn't. Now, it is paying the price with a surge in Kia and Hyundai thefts.
This is what blows my mind. Like, cars cost tens of thousands of dollars. No one is going to balk at an extra $5 bucks for this feature. If nothing, it’s worth the cost to the manufacturer in PR terms. Now Hyundai/Kia have a bad reputation for car thefts. I’m sure avoiding that would have been worth the $5.
A jury has convicted a Hawaii couple of conspiracy, passport fraud and identity theft for stealing identities and living for decades under the names of dead babies....
Kevin Mitnick used a similar tactic to find people who were born in one state, but died in another. This apparently was a loophole as some government systems would still see the person as alive, thus their identity could be exploited. Additionally, since they were dead, they wouldn’t raise any flags or complain about it.

Obviously it’s because the gas goes to Europe, which until recently was very dependent on Russian natural gas. Europe is Ukraine’s ally. Ukraine needs Europe’s military aid and shutting off the gas would make things hard for Europe and potentially upset them.
