Just to add that 2FA does not work reliably on Lemmy instances running less than 0.19. (It’s possible to get locked out) It’s generally recommended not to use it unless your instance has upgraded.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

As I say I’m talking generally, not about your Voyager problem.

It’s not that you can’t log in at all, it’s unreliable. You can get into a state where authentication doesn’t work and there’s not much an admin can do. Check on the Lemmy dev community for some more detail.

0.19 is not far away and some instances are already running the release candidate.

As well as the medical effects, there’s also the realisation (age varies when this happens) that going out in order to get drunk is not a good time.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Yes, this is a really important change.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

I know what you’re saying but the world has moved on. Companies and regulators are talking about fair value as governments adopt ESG laws.

Companies that take an old fashioned “as much as we can get away with” approach are finding their customers drifting away. Nowadays if companies want to put up prices and be successful then they have to make the product (whatever it is) seem more valuable.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

That’s an old fashioned view that business moved on from in the last ten years. It’s all about Environmental,Social and Corporate Governance (ESG investors are in control now at the big investors) with governments and regulators around the world setting rules. There’s a reason Apple is trumpeting its green credentials.

So if a company wants to attract money its needs a strong position. One aspect is the concept of fair value. It gets away from older concepts such as cheap and premium. A product should offer fair value. That means that what it offers is commensurate with the cost to the consumer. The consumer chooses whether the product or service offers fair value. Those companies that offer fair value will attract more investors and more customers.

That’s why I say they are lacking in modern business smarts.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

I didn’t say they don’t want to see companies charge too much. Fair Value is not about the price but the value you get for that price.

I’m talking this planet. Just look for ESG funds and ESG compliant companies. They are valued at over 53 trillion dollars according to the UN.

ESG reporting is now mandatory and a part of accounting standards in the US, UK and the majority of countries.

Incidentally, try investor.apple.com/esg/default.aspx

You’ll find Apples reports back to 2021.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

No, I was responding to your old fashioned views about pricing. Do you see the difference between fair pricing that you mention and fair value ?

The whole point with Fair Value is that the consumer has control. It’s not about fair pricing. It’s about what you get for that price being fair value.

Nowadays a company needs to define its target market and ensure that target market gets fair value. A product can have any price as long as its target market thinks it’s fair value.

We’ve seen some companies innovate and open up new markets that haven’t been served before. For example social tariffs that attract consumers who wouldn’t normally subscribe.

It’s not just me saying this. Many commentators and analysts have pointed out that some companies (not just Apple) are taking a rather basic approach and actually removing value. The whole idea with Apple one was to add value but now that seems to be changing. They are retreating to what they know, put up prices without using their business acumen to increase value.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

One of the potential issues (and it’s a Lemmy thing) is that instances can go off line or have software issues or get taken over by CSAM etc The advice is often that it’s easier to set up a new account. So at any one time there’s lots of new accounts that are actually people who’ve been around a long time.

Could we use AI to update 4:3 media to 16:9?

I’ve been re-watching star trek voyager recently, and I’ve heard when filming, they didn’t clear the wide angle of filming equipment, so it’s not as simple as just going back to the original film. With the advancement of AI, is it only a matter of time until older programs like this are released with more updated...

Very true, I remember a few years ago someone converting old cartoons to a consistent 60 frames a second.

If they’d asked an animator they’d have found out that animation purposely uses different rates of change to give a different feel to scenes. So the improvement actually ruined what they were trying to improve.

I’m on discuss.online and can join, vote and comment. Which version of Voyager are you on? Is it possible you’re banned?

Why do phones come with SMS delivery reports turned off by default?

Delivery reports are a convenience feature that lets the sender know if the message they sent has been received (not read) by the recipient’s device (for this, it has to be online and have sufficient storage space, though modern phones usually have so much storage the latter is no problem at all)....

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

As well as the charges issue there are three other points.

They are delivery reports not read reports.

Because of the way they are implemented they are low priority on the network and will be dropped at busy times. (This means the lack of a delivery report doesn’t necessarily mean it wasn’t delivered)

They don’t work reliably across different message centres. If you and the recipient are on different message centres, You’ll get a delivery report when it reaches the next message centre. (This means that a delivery report doesn’t necessarily mean the message was delivered)

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

This is true. When I checked on this about five years ago (in the UK), the cost per message was about £0.00001

With the reduction in the number of SMS sent, it now costs more to bill them. In the UK, even the cheapest monthly contract has unlimited calls and texts. There a pre-pay tariffs as low as £3 a month with calls, texts and some data.

Better performance with recent updates

I am on a low end Android device (but one with a high refresh rate screen) and with the recent updates, it feels as the app is far more performant. Animations are smoother and stutters are few and far between. Just wanted to appreciate the work done by the dev and also the developers of the ionic framework. Between them they...

I agree, I’ve noticed a smoother experience on my iPhone 12.

Apparently it’s a tax write off.

It’s risky though because a) Star Trek is no longer all in one place b) if it’s a hit then Netflix benefit.

Posts being auto-removed or auto-hidden

Hey! So I posted today with my main account, @Stamets, to !memes but after an hour it showed no signs of activity. No upvotes, no downvotes, no nothing. So I checked the modlog just in case and there seemed to be no sign that anything was removed or that I was banned. So I made a post to this community on that same account...

It is odd that community bans don’t come with any communication.

Why is cooking a food item method called different things by what the item is, or what is the criteria?

On the Food network they boil potatoes, but they poach carrots. They poach turkey, but they boil eggs. They sauté’ onions, but they fry eggs in the same pan. Likewise, they fry hash browns, but they sauté’ onions in the same pan before adding the potatoes....

FelipeFelop,

Boiling and poaching are not the same. Frying and sautéing are not the same.

FelipeFelop,

I think it’s a pretty accurate answer. The OP asked why it’s sometimes calked poaching and sometimes boiling. The answer being that they aare different things.

Why in these videos is it always someone so out of it they can only say the same thing over and over. Pointless waste of time

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Good question, I was thinking about this the other day. The reason being that development of several fediverse apps has seemingly stalled because the previously active developers have life issues. (I’m not moaning about it, just a straightforward account)

It seems to me that FOSS developers wouldn’t want their projects to be popular. Because that comes with pressure to constantly improve or expand and it takes up more time. So they start a Patreon or similar but that adds more pressure.

When projects are community developed then I see disagreements and personality clashes which increases stress for lead developers.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

But how far is that?

I think this was designed so that if you leave the text entry (and eg. The OS shuts down the app ) then the text is preserved.

But it seems to save some of it most times. It’s a bit annoying.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

You’ve inadvertently hit on the beginnings of an apparent paradox to do with the relationship between numbers and the counting numbers

Suppose the largest number you can have is X and the smallest number you can have is -Y. Then between -Y and X, you can count X+Y numbers which is clearly larger than X. But X is the largest possible number so X+Y doesn’t exist.

New physical cosmological model

With a mechanism that continually creates matter in the universe we don’t need a big bang. Creation of matter and gravity fields, (net zero) could somehow increase the expansion of the universe. 3d interference pattern of gravitational waves would create rogue waves at specific points in SpaceTime that would create matter and...

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Excuse my ignorance but what is CMB?

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Thanks. What mechanism would cause the gravity waves?

I ask because there is a controversial theory that the universe actually consists of a number of interacting fields. They’ve always been there. What we observe as matter, time etc are the result of those fields.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Yes, but black holes are an accretion of matter, that as far as we know is locked away until it evaporates. For there to be a net increase in overall matter due to gravitational waves there’d need to be either another source of waves (as in the field theory) or the waves would have to produce matter at a rate in violation of E=mc^2+C (which could be wrong)

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Pulsars are made of matter, which runs into the how did it all start problem (if there was no big bang to create the matter)

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Generally conservation of energy applies in a closed system, so wouldn’t apply at the creation of the system.

(Plus we can’t (yet) be sure what caused the Big Bang if it happened)

I’ve always liked the idea that matter, space and time are the way we observe the interactions of fields. So gravity waves make an interesting idea as to how part of it might work

Did you know there is some evidence that our brains are apparently aware of certain events before they actually happen. This isn’t supernatural but possible evidence of something going on outside of the space time we are familiar with. Or that time is not a straightforward arrow in one direction.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Agreed, this is the most on topic post we’ve had for a while.

With the proviso that you don’t give it to companies. Use a feature like hide my email or use forwarding from a gmail etc account.

(Companies like Facebook can use your own domain to profile you and your family. Other companies use Facebook services for advertising )

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

This is another example of ageism. The key characteristic here is not that they are older but they use an ISP provided email address. They could be 24 with an ISPaccount they’ve used for ten years.

It’s also an example of media stereotyping older people as somehow being affected more, implying they can’t/won’t switch, are somehow not savvy enough with technology to cope and to be less capable.

Look at it this way. If you’ve had an email address for 30 years. How many times did they move house or change car or change phone number. Did they cope with that? Of course they did. And it’s more disruptive when you move physically

The UN is campaigning to stop older people being stigmatised as set in their ways, unable to cop and technologically disadvantaged. Not only does it penalise older people but distracts from the real issue. The issue here isn’t their age but the lack of portability of email addresses which are used as a means of identity.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

You are perpetuating stereotypes. They have been using computers for at least 30 years as they’ve had the email address that long.

What do you think this certain age is ? What evidence do you have to counter the UN campaign and the actual research? I’m happy to consider alternative viewpoints. Is this something that just seems logical to you?

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Excellent point

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

It was you that brought up using computers. You didn’t say anything about learning or progressing.

As for certain age, I think your answer actually supports my piint that it’s down to individual experience rather than age. Consider a manual worker who doesn’t trust technology and will only have a basic dumb phone. They are technology averse but might be in their 20s.

Computerisation of the workplace started in the 70s (I was there) and by the mid 80s was commonplace. Even shops were installing computerised systems then, even if it was a standalone register with a number of preset department numbers. A conservative estimate is that the majority of people working and living from 1990 onwards would have experience of computers whether at work, in shops, at the bank, in the car or public transport or at home. Let’s be generous and say they retired in 2000 at age 60 (will be higher in most countries) after ten years of familiarity then they’d be over 80 now.

And yet we have people much younger than that who are technology averse and unable or willing to learn. Why is that? Because age is not the deciding factor but people’s own lives experience.

Have a look at the UN Global Report on ageism and how it affects younger people as well as older people. The flip side of stereotyping older people is that you automatically stereotype younger people as being easily able to do the thing you think older people can’t do.

You’re right that the UN is not always consistent but note that the Secretary General is not talking exclusivity but that more support is needed and that they are referring to new technologies rather than email which has been around for over 50 years. I sent my first email in 1981 when addresses were resolved in the opposite way to nowadays.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

It literally says that it’s due to ageism!
