ye gods I miss Mini-thins. Used to buy those at 7-11 when heading out on a road trip. Ephedrine FTW.

How is plugging in a Chromecast any different than using the same software built into a Google TV?

Linux mint is great. Debian version is even better.

Can I read Lemmy in Emacs?

Wow, complete opposite of my experiences with Air Canada.

Dont look at the time stamp!

pbjamm,
@pbjamm@beehaw.org avatar

$500 is better than $0 but I dont see it significantly changing the math involved. It might relieve the pressure a little for some people but only for a month, maybe 2.

pbjamm,

I have no idea what this has to do with what I said.

That kind of thinking is what got Trump elected and look at the wonders that did for the USA.

“Liberalism isnt working fast enough, lets try fascism” was a bad strategy

pbjamm,
@pbjamm@beehaw.org avatar

What this fails to account for is that the party of nazis and demagogues is heavily responsible for that hopelessness. They somehow manage to successfully pass the blame to the other party who at least are trying to relieve that a little bit, around the margins. This is a case of perfection being the enemy of good, and it is stupid and self destructive in the extreme.

The problem with taxing High Value Property is what happens when Single Family Homes hit that value? If the value of my house skyrockets while I am living there then I can end up losing it do to a massive hike in my taxes.

pbjamm,
@pbjamm@beehaw.org avatar

I bring this up because California implemented Prop13 in 1978 to address similar issues and it had mixed results.

I agree with the idea of taxing secondary properties at a higher rate. But that could also have the unintended consequence of driving up rents and landlords look to recoup that money.

The speed can fluctuate as users pop on and off a server, but in general I have gotten excellent speeds (100mbps+). If ever I am getting poor throughput I swap to a different random server until I get what I need. I do not torrent with it though so I am not sure how it fares with that use.

pbjamm,
@pbjamm@beehaw.org avatar

Will that magically improve his base hardware?

pbjamm,
@pbjamm@beehaw.org avatar

Where was that happening? I lived in California 30 years (until last month) and had not experienced a rolling blackout since the ENRON era.

I just moved to BC and have no medical/dental insurance yet. Last week I had to pay out-of-pocket to see a dentist and got a prescription for antibiotics. I paid less than I ever did in the US where I did have insurance. Less than CA$100 to see a dentist, get an xray and the prescription. Mindblowing.

pbjamm,

Thanks! So far I am loving it. Real test will be when the kids start school next week :)

Their free VPN is good enough that I have not had to purchase their paid version, but I probably will anyway.

Since you are looking to play single player you might also want to check out Minetest with the Mineclone2 addon installed. It is not identical, but it is an amazing substitute and free.

That will get passed on to a local municipality, just like building sprawling suburbs

Interplay…feel like I am in the Wayback Machine. I worked there for a few years at the time of Carmageddon, Fallout1/2, Descent, and some other classics. A lifetime ago.

I still have my Vault13 flask from Fallout2. Sad that I can not really use it anymore though as the printing is very fragile now.

Rob Leifield could barely draw hands/feet and managed a successful career as a comic book artist.

The only thing that could fix that up is a fire.

There is only so much POTUS can do without the support of the Congress, and the House is currently controlled by people who would rather watch America fail than a Democrat succeed.

pbjamm,
@pbjamm@beehaw.org avatar

no serious person would discuss Trump with anything but disdain.

pbjamm,
@pbjamm@beehaw.org avatar

Relevant to this discussion I just moved from the LA area to Vancouver Island. Though there is a drought here no one from Los Angeles would recognize it as such.

The city in California where I lived had a water treatment plant whose output was used to irrigate city parks and landscaping. Not particularly practical to run a parallel water system outside a dense urban area. Maybe not even then. I was not aware of any individual homes that were using grey water systems unless it was some DIY kind of set up. The most I ever did was collect the water I used to wash rice or when waiting for the shower to warm up and use that to water my garden. Eliminating waste like that probably does little in the grand scheme but after living in a desert for so long I can not just pour water down the drain without trying to salvage some of it. Dual flush toilets can also cut down on waste or the tried and true “Don’t flush for #1” . Even new toilets use 5L per flush so that adds up fast.

Good friend of mine has a gimpy leg after 2 too many motorcycle accidents. He is lucky to have one of them at all. I dont think “lame” has ever come up in context of him or his infirmary.

I have argued with otherwise intelligent people who sound exactly like the person above. It is a strange contrarian mentality with no basis in the science as they claim. I once even took up the challenge from someone who said I was afraid to investigate the “other side”. I read every single thing he sent me and they were all rubbish. Not a one of them even support the claims he made. When I responded saying this just fired back that I was brain-washed or carrying water for commies or other such inanities. It became clear after a while that he did not even understand the basics of the greenhouse effect or how CO2 and other gasses cause it. I was utterly flabbergasted.

long story short : the person above may have the degrees they claim but they are not educated on this subject. It is so simple even a layman can understand it so they have no excuse.

pbjamm,

I would place the blame for poor driver support directly on the chip/device manufacturer and not on Linux (whoever that is).

My employer has thankfully taken the opposite approach. They decided that the only people who had to return to the office were those who needed to interact with directly humans or physical objects. Anyone who could do their job from home was free to do so. My boss said he was happy that employees could live where they wanted instead of within an hour of one of the offices. I took him at his word and moved from California to British Columbia.

I had passage booked to Vancouver yesterday and had to change plans to go to Horseshoe Bay instead. Not a gigantic deal, but added almost an hour each way to the trip.

For sure an inauspicious start for Hullo.

New Covid vaccines are on the way as 'Eris' variant rises (www.reuters.com)

Some public health experts hope that Americans will welcome the new shot as they would a flu jab. But demand for the vaccine has dropped sharply since 2021 when it first became available and more than 240 million people in the U.S., or 73% of the population, received at least one shot....

What made Place special was the rarity. It created a sort of internet time capsule of what was popular or in the collective mind at that point in time. If you wanted to get what was important to you on the board then you had to act with purpose RIGHT NOW because it would be over and gone in a couple of days. Even with all the effort put in it would be erased at the end. Just Dust in the Wind.

pbjamm,
@pbjamm@beehaw.org avatar

Exactly what I was thinking. Place would not be as compelling if it were a regular occurrence or if it were a permanent never-ending contest.

Words are wind, and that is all that Reddit is offering mods.

I feel bad for them. They clearly care far more about the communities they have created than Reddit can even pretend to.

Alternative to Google Photos

So I’m looking to disconnect myself from Google and their tracking (as much as possible) and I was thinking about installing GrapheneOS on my Pixel phone. I mostly use my phone for Lemmy, Signal, NewPipe and taking photos. The last one is my biggest bother at the moment. The Google Photos environment is so convenient - I take...

Synology DSM is only available on Synology hardware. It is not something you can buy from them and install on your own NAS.

However…

There is Xpenology that works fairly well. I ran one for a couple of years and loved it, but updating it difficult and potentially dangerous to your data, some apps will not work and the latest DSM7 does not look like it will ever be available. I finally gave up last year and bought an Asustor AS3304T. Their ASM software and apps are not on par with Synology but it gets the job done for me at a significantly cheaper price.

SMBC has a great comic on boy vs girl toys. Super relevant to this conversation. I have had it hanging on the wall of my office as a reminder since my eldest daughter was born 16yrs ago.
