okamiueru,

Are you saying that this information isn’t collected by Plex for a use case that doesn’t obviously require it? Because if it is the case, then it’s a big fucking deal.

okamiueru,

If the purpose of collecting the data by private companies is to somehow make money, do you think that sharing this data, or conclusions based on this data, somehow manages to exclude access of governmental agencies? I’ve never gotten the impression that CIA/NSA would ever willingly play nice.

okamiueru,

12% in Norway! At least last I checked when this same stat was posted.

okamiueru,

Easy enough to convert it to a pen plotter. You can 3d print the attachment first, then use it to have it move a pen around with G-code.

okamiueru,

Have you looked into home assistant? There is a pretty solid and mature community around you managing all these different smart systems yourself.

That said, in not sure this is relevant, I’m too sleepy to read all of what you wrote. Apologies

okamiueru,

They very recently removed the only reasonable legal alternative of Premium Lite (which I think never existed in North America).

What did you do to survive the night of/after a breakup?

Boyfriend of 2 years (best friend of 6) just told me he’s started seeing someone else. No discussion. Just ghosted me for a week and hit me with this news. Thought he was my soulmate, lmao. I feel like someone just ripped out my insides. Just turned 31 this year, this shit is not any easier than when I was a teenager....

okamiueru,

Yet, you somehow managed to outdo it. Attaboy

okamiueru, (edited )

That seems unethical, no? Hope EU slaps them with some fines for this BS. Same with premium early access for gaming. Consumer rights are being stripped little by little.

Edit: help me out here. Why is this controversial? Maybe I should have said “premium early play” instead of “premium early access”?

okamiueru, (edited )

The right most image there is certainly not real

okamiueru,

What’s the reason why you think this is an asshole design? I can think of two:

  • Advertisements in of itself is a blight on humanity
  • They have a dominant market position and it’s almost impossible to compete.

But, these two things aside?

okamiueru,

Nope. Straight up just wondering if there was more to it that I wasn’t catching.

okamiueru,

Dude… Have some faith in the ability for critical thought? Most people are idiots, but the truth really matters to the rest.

okamiueru,

Hang in there. Critical thought, measured skepticism, and a desire to learn and understand before speaking, are all very quiet compared to what you encounter on public forums. Doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

okamiueru, (edited )

I’m all for open discussions. But… shouldn’t one know the basic facts on a topic before seemingly expressing an opinion on the matter? You clearly need to take an unbiased look at the situation.

You do not kill hundreds of innocent people and blame it on oppression.

The oblivious irony of such a statement.

okamiueru,

Why do you expect an argument? I’m pointing out what seems to me as a flaw in reasoning based on what seems to be a lack of understanding of the situation.

okamiueru,

I doubt I’m anything like you, and I also doubt I think like you. I’ve spent my life always critical of what I think, always allowing myself to be wrong. So I don’t look at this situation with the gut feeling and emotion you seem to have. I look at humans, and human behavior. I’m skeptical of any news and media, especially if there is reason to suspect an agenda.

This is literally collateral damage that is inevitable… Israel is doing the right thing Hamas is a terrorist organization Land is not owned by any society. It is owned by the power of the society at the time

Each of those sentences combined, paints such a strong picture, that I’m surprised you cannot see it for what it is.

okamiueru, (edited )

Going by the numbers would suggest Israel is 20 times worse than Hamas. But, that was before they started one of the largest scale war crimes in recent history*… I would argue that Israel is, from what seems to me a rather objective point of view, to be much worse

*I’m referring to the war crime on 2.2 million civilians who are being cut off from water, electricity and food, who can do nothing about it, because of, you guessed it, Israel.

okamiueru,

Indeed. There are many still who are making big bucks on this misconception. The worst offender in my opinion is “The dog whisperer”, who is likely the worst well known dog trainer, and has done (and still does) a lot of damage. The whole basis for his school of thought is based on this alpha/beta/omega hierarchy.

okamiueru,

Why does this piss you off? Do you make a habit of getting angry at very predictable things? They’ve always done this.

okamiueru, (edited )

What the fuck are you on about? I’m not defending Bethesda. I’m saying that if a company makes games with the exact same kind of flaws every time - getting upset when they do it again suggests the issue might be with the inability to make basic inference.

It’s like if you don’t like chocolate, buy a bar of chocolate, and going “Gah! This one has chocolate too!”.

They didn’t rewrite the creation engine. It’s going to have the same feeling and issues as other games made with that engine. It wouldn’t have to be this way if they had done a good job. But, they don’t seem to have to do that for a lot of people to enjoy their games. But being surprised by it? Nah, that’s on you (figuratively)

okamiueru,

Being disappointed requires unmet expectation. “Surprised”. Why don’t you pick a word you prefer that conveys unmet expectations? I think you know perfectly well what I mean. And if you don’t, then, well, I’m not here to argue.

okamiueru,

I hope EU slaps Apple hard for abusing their market position in this. I’ve seen it happen in several companies I’ve worked in. Developers prefer Linux, but it’s the only machine you can build for all target platforms, so… macbooks it is.

okamiueru,

Well… Whenever that statement is said, there is a pretty significant caveat: the data collection done by apple itself is ignored.

okamiueru, (edited )

Plenty of developers prefer Macs to anything else.

Of course. They are pretty great battery wise. UX and OS is however inconsistent, buggy and frustrating. I had expected “annoying design decisions”, but not wrong and buggy ones.

okamiueru, (edited )

You seem to have some impressive confirmation bias going on. What makes you think gaming is dead? The only real argument here, which you aren’t even making, is mobile gaming market, but that seems almost remarcably as if it’s created a new market and not really affecting pc/console gaming.

Edit: just read some of your other comments now. Feel free to move on, not interested in a discussion.

okamiueru,

Because it’s childish and uninteresting? Truth-teller? Sheeesh. Add “martyr” to the list.

okamiueru,

You don’t fight war crimes with war crimes. It might be tempting, as revenge is built into our genes. But, remember who the enemy actually is, and not who you imagine from a gut feeling. A war crime wouldn’t punish Moscow, it would give them credibility for propaganda.

okamiueru,

Maybe possible for some packages, but, a package manager main reason for existing is usually handling dependencies so as to not result in conflicts.

Definitely something that sounds easy, but is likely far from it for packages that have a deep tree of dependencies

okamiueru,

I hope it never will. Genuinely.

okamiueru,

LibreOffice Writer follows Open Document Format, unlike MS Office Word. This is intentional by MS, because they have significant market share. So, any broken files is “because of LibreOffice”, even though the inverse is true.

So, I consider Office Word to be a dangerous and harmful product, and I’m glad that it isn’t available on Linux/Wine. It just isn’t good, and LibreOffice works for 99.9% of what people use that kind of software for.

okamiueru,

True. Governments and respective institutions should however not. Some countries understand this. Other have had their ISO standard committees bought out by MS in more than shady circumstances. I remember when this was discussed in Norway. Everyone in the panel concluded to use ODF. They were ignored. They all resigned.

I unplug physicals disks when installing windows. Learned the hard way when windows placed the boot partition on a device it could not detect the filsystem of. It destroyed my RAID disks (a little but my fault, because I messed up the recovery).

This is what Windows installer saw (going by memory, this was 8 years ago)

  • SSD 500 GB (either it recognised ext4 file system, or this one was unknown)
  • SSD 500 GB (Where I specified to install windows)
  • 4 x HDD 8TB (unknown disks, unknown file system, Windows unaware that this was a RAID-5 software dm-raid)

What did it to? It created a new partition table and wrote data to a new boot partition it made on one of the 8TB disks, no questions asked.

So, to the people who answered you that windows installer cannot do this. Maybe they fixed it. But it certainly could, and it cetianly did. I remember very carefully going through the installer because I was concerned about this happening. I thought about unplugging them, but was lazy. Because “it would be insane for windows to write on a disk it cannot identify the file system of”.

Lessons learned:

  • If you plan to install windows on a disk along side Linux, install windows first, if you can. Safest bet is still to:
  • If you cannot, unplug all other disks other than the one windows is intended to be on.

Edit: I found post on this way back when, but leaving what I wrote as is.

superuser.com/…/mdadm-win7-install-created-a-boot…

I had remembered some details wrong. I had unplugged the Linux SSD, and it wad raid 6 not 5, and it was 2TB disks.

okamiueru,

Boot into Linux using a USB, and fix your boot partition from there.

okamiueru,

Hm. That wouldn’t correct any established injustice.

okamiueru,

Does anyone know why they shut it down? The replacement was worse on every single account. And by such a significant amount too.

okamiueru,

Technically, the inch is defined by the meter, so it’s all SI.

okamiueru,

I would argue that you are completely right. But, it would surprise me if there isn’t a fairly strong correlation between the two (corelation!=majority). Living in a society where expected social interactions far exceed the comfort level can sure cause some anxiety.

All that said, if you are anxious to interact with another person with very fixed frames for the interaction (like a person working in a shop at the checkout counter (I don’t know the name)), then you have social anxiety and unlikely just being introverted.

okamiueru,

Noise cancelling headphones is almost a medical aid when it comes to shopping. You don’t have to listen to any noises except ones you like, and, people are much less likely to bother you.

okamiueru, (edited )

I’d personally recommend Sennheiser Momentum 4. I have that one, and a Sony WH-1000XM4. I think maybe the Sony has slightly better noise cancellation, but the M4 has better sound, and much better registration for when it is removed etc, so I only use that one. I’ve many times picked up the XM4 and it’s out of battery because it never turned itself of. That has never happened with the M4, and it’s super nice to be on the phone with someone, move the headphone from the right ear to talk to someone nearby, and it automatically mutes me. That kind of thing.

But, different budgets, different needs (I need over the ear for comfort, etc). Definitely don’t take my word for it though and just see if you can try them out in a store. Maybe also check the app they expect you to use, as you don’t find out if it sucks before you buy it otherwise.

okamiueru, (edited )

I share the dislike of everything needing apps these days. The sony one was a little bit annoying because it seemed to have some paid products looking like normal features. It also occasionally turns on a feature that was quite annoying, where talking (even clearing your throat) would turn off noise cancelling and even amplify ambient noose. And I had to use the app to switch that feature off once a week.

The Momentum 4 works well without the app. It’s nice if you want to change the equaliser settings. I sometimes do as they have a preset for audiobooks/podcasts. And it’s been nice to confirm the effect of gestures you can do on the headphone (most moderns over the ear headphones have capasitive finger gestures on the flat side). Bluetooth works fine out of the box, and with it you can check battery power, switch tracks, volume, all of that stuff.

The only thing you really need the app for, is updating the headphone firmware, which you likely want to do, as they sometimes improve the notice cancelling, etc. Sidenote, that update took almost half an hour to complete, which is the longest firmware update I’ve ever seen. I havent checked if it is possible to update firmware using a computer and USB.

In any case. If it helps you out, I’m glad. Have a good one.

okamiueru,

Happy to help. Good luck. I also noticed your username twice now, I wrote about the windows installer messing up my RAID system. Lemmy is a small world yet :) Have a good one.

okamiueru,

The… UI in blender is really good. Have you used any other equivalent software or know how complicated it is?

It’s not “good but it’s a hard problem to solve”. It is more “great and it’s a hard problem to solve”

okamiueru,

I learned the hard way to never trust windows to not destroy other disks. One time it decided to place the boot partition on a disk it saw having a unknown file system. Turns out it was a disk on a raid-array. After that I physically unpower all other disks before installing windows.

okamiueru,

The only nut job conspiracy I believe is that there is something in the food, water or air, that makes Americans dumb as fuck.

That’s how I rationalise their love for dumb impractical cars that look tough, and why complete dimwits get so much air time, let alone can become president.

okamiueru,

I’ve gotten wealthier, older, and far less conservative. The older I get, the more obvious it is that capitalism (as it is implemented now) is destroying the world and deeply immoral in its implementation.

I also become more convinced that most people are morons and shouldn’t vote. I probably shouldn’t vote either. But, probably doesn’t matter since this century is likely going to end in global unrest and world wars. shrug

What are some FOSS programs that you think are a far better user experience than their counterparts? (sh.itjust.works)

I used Plex for my home media for almost a year, then it stopped playing nice for reasons I gave up on diagnosing. While looking at alternatives, I found Jellyfin which is much more responsive, IMO, and the UI is much nicer as well....

okamiueru,

qBittorrent

Are there non-FOSS qBittorrent clients? I didn’t mention it since it doesn’t feel like a thing. I don’t count MacOS software, as there you’ll find commercial apps for anything you can imagine. You can probably find a paid app to do Alt+Tab correctly.
