netchami,

It’s used to store configuration files for various applications so they don’t clutter up your home directory. For example, you can put your Emacs config files in ~/.config/emacs instead of ~/.emacs.d. Not every program supports it though.

netchami,

I agree.

netchami,

Facebook and the Zuck commonly taking an L

netchami,

We have that over here too

netchami,

The same goes for the UAE or Saudi Arabia

netchami,

It’s kinda the opposite on Mac and Windows. macOS updates have actually been free for a long time whereas Microsoft technically still charges for updates

netchami,

GrapheneOS had it’s first stable Android 14 release on October 8th, just 3 days after it the first release by Google. GrapheneOS is just superior. And it doesn’t include any spyware and unlike the Samsung ROM it doesn’t install TikTok on your phone…

netchami,

Well it takes more time if you also have to port all the spyware/bloatware to ensure that the user will always be spied on. Imagine the spyware failing, that would have disastrous consequences for Samsung, Google and their other data mining friends…

netchami,

screenrant.com/tiktok-essential-app-samsung-insta…reddit.com/…/samsung_now_installs_tiktok_as_an_es…reddit.com/…/samsung_forcing_tiktok_on_me_claimin…

I also encountered that when I set up a Samsung phone for my dad. And I also got Facebook preinstalled on a Samsung phone a few years ago.

netchami,

I didn’t have Tiktok installed on my S23U.

I already responded to that in my other comment:

useful features like Dex

I really don’t mean to insult Samsung users or to make fun of Samsung software, but have you ever used Dex? In my entire time of using a Dex-compatible Samsung phone, I didn’t touch this feature once. It reminds me of what Microsoft did on their crappy Windows Phones with Continuum. Who would ever use something like that?

netchami,

The app recommendations on setup don’t bother me personally, as I skip that altogether.

TikTok was/is in the recommendations, but you can’t remove it. They will force you to install it at all costs. IMO this is fucking ridiculous.

netchami,

things have since improved (at least where I am)

That’s good.

But after using GrapheneOS for almost a year, I will probably never use any other mobile OS. I don’t have to bother with preinstalled bloatware like Facebook or TikTok as well as spyware like Google Play services that I can’t remove. It’s also probably the most secure and private mobile OS available right now. It gives me back all control over my device and my digital life, it’s just awesome. It’s kinda like Linux in the sense that it empowers users to take back control over their systems, but it’s super easy to use, it’s basically Android without the crap and with improved privacy and security. You can use Google Play services if you want to, but they don’t run with elevated privileges, you can revoke any permissions (including network access) and uninstall them anytime you want to.

netchami,

Huge fucking W for Graphene as always. It’s probably the only competent mobile OS developmemt team out there right now

netchami,

That bastard should be locked away for the rest of his life. Just like any other Google executive.

netchami,

It’s the entire mafia of executives, the board of advisors and the shareholders (mostly venture capitalist firms) working together to screw over the public and make big profits. I totally agree that we need worldwide systematic change.

netchami,

Yeah, but there are people running honest and genuine business, even in a capitalist system. But those there are also those who just try to fuck over everyone. Most corporations, politicians, banks, investment funds and others do the latter, not because capitalism forces them to do so, but because these humans are living pieces of garbage and should be locked away or executed. I don’t know if it helps to take all fault away from the people running the capitalist system and attributing it to the system itself.

netchami,

What about just not using any services from this garbage company at all? Guess what, it doesn’t cost you a single dollar or euro for that matter to erase any Facebook apps from your life. It also drastically improves your life.

netchami,

This is great! GOG and itch.io are the only ethical game marketplaces that are left.

privacy concerning (I'm a noob in this field)

hello everyone, I have a question that might turn out to be even stupid but I can’t find an answer, I am approaching the world of privacy and anonymity, the question is, even if I have an old laptop where previously there was windows and no methods were used to protect the identity is the pc still considered valid? because if...

netchami,

If you are concerned for Wi-fi beacons scanning your MAC address, you can use tools like SpoofMAC to randomize it. You might also be able to swap out the Wi-fi card on the laptop.

netchami,

If you’re getting a new phone anyway just get a Google Pixel and install GrapheneOS on it. It’s way more private and secure than Calyx ever will be. It also has per-connection MAC address randomization built in and it’s enabled by default.

netchami,

Android can do this by default, no need to significantly increase attack surface by loading third-party code with elevated privileges. GrapheneOS, probably the most private and secure mobile OS out there even has per-connection randomization, the strongest form of MAC address randomization, built in and enabled by default for all networks.

he finished Paper Mario 64 (lemmy.world)

I helped for the battles and reading the dialogues but he did all the exploring by himself. He’s so thrilled, but also sad it’s over. Now I’m hesitant between Pokemon FireRed (he loves Pokemon but that a lot more text to read) or PaperMario TTYD (but we don’t have a switch for the remaster version). Any other ideas for...

netchami,

Poor kid having to play on a MacBook

netchami,

It’s my old work MacBook.

Ok sure, that explains a lot.

netchami,

Yes. They absolutely will.

Some solutions:

netchami,

The other options (especially LibreTube) are much better for Privacy as they don’t include any Google trackers and LibreTube doesn’t even connect to Google servers. It proxies everything through a Piped server, meaning Google never sees your IP address or any other connection details. It’s basically anonymized YouTube.

netchami,

Personally, I prefer LibreTube on my phone and Piped on desktop. I also use NextDNS when I’m on the go and Pi-Hole when I’m at home. I haven’t used an official YouTube app or website for the last 2 years.

netchami,

There used to be one, but it was shut down. IMO there shouldn’t be an ‘official’ instance, users should be evenly distributed across instances and everything should be decentralized. The same goes for Mastodon or Lemmy, having most users concentrated on mastodon.social or lemmy.ml is not good. Centralization is pretty much always bad, but it’s the only model of how services on the internet work that new users coming from centralized platforms understand. It’s sad and unfortunate, but we might be able to change that. The more terrible decisions are made by corporations, the more successful will free and open source, decentralized software be. We saw it with Mastodon when Musk bought Twitter, we saw it again with Lemmy when Reddit was fucked by spez.

netchami,

I want to avoid solutions that involve using the YouTube app/website (including modded YouTube apps like Revanced or browser addons to use on the website)

netchami,

I absolutely hate Google and won’t ever give them even a single penny. If there’s a creator I like, I support them through Patreon, Ko-fi, Liberapay or preferably anonymous crypto currency like Monero.

netchami,

Sure, but you don’t really lose anything by using privacy-oriented solutions like LibreTube. It’s just a really nice YouTube client for Android, it also has SponsorBlock and DeArrow integration, a nice and convenient download feature and many other things

netchami,

Yes it is? The Revanced Manager app literally takes a YouTube apk and injects patches for ad blocking, SponsorBlock, etc.

netchami,

Same, but I’m using Piped

netchami,

That’s what you call a rolling release distribution.

netchami,

Get a Steam Deck, build your own console running SteamOS or ChimeraOS or just game on a PC like any normal person. (Preferably on Linux, it gives you endless freedom and nowadays supports most games. You can also emulate any game on any console you like and use whatever controller or other input devices you want.)

netchami,

Hey, I’m a former Windows user myself. I also used and enjoyed ShareX on Windows, I haven’t found a perfect replacement but KDE Spectacle and Flameshot are pretty good. Flameshot is my personal favourite. Have you tried Peek for capturing GIFs? There’s also Kooha.

Everything can search my computer in a few milliseconds without issue but I haven’t gotten close to that on Linux

I almost never need to search my entire computer, but when I do, I use the command-line tool fd. It’s very fast and pretty easy to use. You just type fd followed by the expression you want to look for. ANGRYsearch seems to be a GUI replacement for Everything, haven’t tried that one out though.

Thanks to dust I deleted a 70 gig file on my drive

Dust is a rewrite of du (in rust obviously) that visualizes your directory tree and what percentage each file takes up. But it only prints as many files fit in your terminal height, so you see only the largest files. It’s been a better experience that du, which isn’t always easy to navigate to find big files (or atleast...

netchami,

I would have to look at the log file. Some plugin probably has an issue and writes massive amounts of data to the log every time you use Neovim. Monitor the growth of the log file and contact me via DM if it goes crazy again, I’m gonna try to figure out what’s going on.

netchami,

It’s not that expensive, my Pixel 6a was 300 bucks.

netchami,

The website just links to the repo

netchami,

I think I know why they don’t publish details about bugs. It might have something to do with this grapheneos.social/

netchami,

What do you e.g. on your phone when your not at home and you can’t connect to the Pi-Hole?

netchami,

Oh, so you have the VPN server set up at home so that you can connect to your home network. That makes sense. I thought you used a commercial VPN provider to hide your IP.

netchami,

I know, but the fact that this happened is bad enough IMO. It’s the reason I switched instances.

netchami,

Didn’t know that.

netchami,

they have their own products they sell

Yeah, I know that. I even paid for one of their products.

they worked together on Proton

Thanks, I didn’t know that. I only remember that they also contributed a lot of code to Wine.

Apparently they have some really talented developers and a good mission.

Google app being flagged as a virus by Huawei phones (stackdiary.com)

I’m seeing a lot of reports from users of Huawei and Honor devices have reported that their phones are incorrectly identifying Google apps as Trojan malware, specifically labeled as TrojanSMS-PA. According to the alert, this “malicious software” has the ability to send SMS messages without user consent.
