morriscox,

With rent you’re just paying to live there. With a mortgage every payment means you own more of the place (equity). If you have payed off the mortgage or didn’t need one then you have equity that you can use for last-ditch funding.

morriscox,

Good point on the basement but the overall concern seems to be that the cost of real estate (including renting) is getting so it’s not feasible for most people to move along from just renting (if they choose to).

morriscox,

My mother-in-law did a phone call and I chewed her out. I couldn’t believe it but then she complained about “kids these days” being on their phone at a restaurant and I pointed out that she was holding her phone and that we were at a restaurant. She shut up.

morriscox,

I have Tailscale setup as the primary connection with my local SSID as secondary. Works great and the Pro version is worth it.

I remember when Circuit City fired the employees that were costing them the most money. sfgate.com/…/Lessons-in-how-Circuit-City-s-job-cu…

They eventually went bankrupt.

morriscox,

When Windows 95 was in beta I would install it and next day it was dead. We finally realized that the BIOS was killing it.

morriscox,

Me as a poster? Or as a tech? Or other techs? ???

morriscox,

Ah. I wasn’t sure of the context and wanted to clarify. I was pretty sure but I’m tired and my last post only got one comment about the post being too long.

Maybe there should be a Rule about other techs making work for you.

morriscox,

Maybe he thought you were being sadistic?

morriscox,

What’s to keep someone from using a botnet to install tens or hundreds of thousands of installations?

morriscox,

Evernote. Mentioning adding AI is code for incoming price hikes and limitations.

morriscox,

I’m reminded of a post recently where someone asked how to get rid of a dialog in Windows and got swamped with replies saying to install Linux. It’s like getting a check engine light in your car and being told to buy a truck.

morriscox,

I looked at C++ code and C# code and decided to go for C# because it’s actually readable for someone starting.

morriscox,

In Star Trek Online the fleet shows up years later and attack the station. They weren’t destroyed just relocated in time (no pun intended).

morriscox, (edited )

Why does it seem like any issue with Windows is met by “INSTALL LINUX!!!”. If the check engine light on my car comes on I am not going to buy a truck.

morriscox,

My car serves my needs more than a truck does. Not only is it easier for a wheelchair user to get in, I can load/unload easier and it’s more comfortable for me to drive.

morriscox,

Why spend a lot of time installing and configuring and learning a bunch of stuff when I just want the error code cleared?

morriscox,

Didn’t find one for a 2016 Ford C-Max.

What is your machine naming scheme?

I’ve ended up with a number of machines on my network, and a need to name them all in a somewhat logical way. For several years I had them named after the planets, which worked well until the PCs for myself, my girlfriend, servers and Raspberry Pi’s quickly summed up to more than the eight planets. I’ve broadened it...

morriscox,

I use the names of females that have (had) significance in my life.
