The Promise and Peril of Explainable AI (startrek.website)

The rise and understandability of AI systems have become serious topics in the AI tech sector as a result of AI’s rise. The demand for Explainable AI (XAI) has increased as these systems become more complicated and capable of making crucial judgments. This poses a critical question: Does XAI have the capacity to completely...

No mention of Chain of Thought: https://arxiv.org/abs/2201.11903

It has been shown that an LLM can give significantly more accurate answers if it’s instructed to explain its thought process step by step with an example. The main problem is how to generate such examples. Easy to do for simple math problems, but incredibly difficult for medical diagnoses.

Not really explainable AI, because it cannot explain how it came up with its reasoning. It’s still a black box we cannot possibly understand. But there’s a possibility that models learned to explain its conclusions is the future.

You’re thinking too rationally now. The thing with NFTs is that it’s not rational at all. Try again.

magic_lobster_party,

At this point I hope no one’s surprised about this.

magic_lobster_party,

The purchase is legitimate! My left hand really bought the NFT from my right hand!

magic_lobster_party,

Digital certificates has already existed for half a century. There’s nothing new. A certificate doesn’t get any more legitimate just because it’s recorded on a blockchain.

magic_lobster_party,

How you transact the ownership of NFTs is a different story. I’m reacting to the claim that NFT is “like a certificate of authenticity, but digital”, which is not unique to NFTs at all.

This claim is also often misunderstood, since the NFT can only verify the authenticity of the certificate itself, not the art/asset it’s pointing to.

I can easily create an NFT of Mona Lisa. The blockchain will see no problem with it at all. Heck, I can create 1000 NFTs of Mona Lisa if I want.

magic_lobster_party,

Monkey pictures!

magic_lobster_party,

A tokenized security is the same thing as a tokenized jpeg. Blockchain has no control over what happens outside it.

I could create a token and say it refers to my Ferrari. Obviously I don’t own a Ferrari, but what can the blockchain do about it? To ensure the token is legitimate, some trusted authority must ensure the Ferrari really exists in the physical reality. Suddenly blockchain doesn’t “eliminate the need for accountants”.

And whenever I want to sell the token, someone must ensure I still own the Ferrari. Who knows, maybe I crashed the Ferrari somewhere in the forest?

Same goes for any asset - including carbon offsets, stocks and bonds. Blockchain is completely unable to say anything about the state of the physical reality.

We still beat the same tired old drums about NFTs because if it doesn’t work for jpegs, it doesn’t work for anything.

1920x1080 is closer to 2K if anything.

magic_lobster_party,

I’d argue Facebook messenger is the IE of messaging apps. It’s worse than WhatsApp in possibly every way, and it’s the main form of communication in my country.

magic_lobster_party,

From top of my head:

  • It’s bad at link previews. For example, if someone sends a YouTube link you won’t get a preview thumbnail of the YouTube video. This is weird, because I’m sure this worked before (although not every time). I think this should be basic functionality in modern messaging apps.
  • Terrible photo quality, especially from Android devices. I noted that the image quality of photos from Android users were significantly worse. Like, you can visibly see all the terrible jpeg artifacts. Haven’t seen this to the same extent on other messaging apps.
magic_lobster_party,

Often when I ask “why” too many times, it’s because the coder chose the most convoluted approach to the problem.

Like when someone inherited an entire class just to access a single method, but it turned out he actually didn’t need that method, so he added an extra if statement in that method and a Boolean flag so it can do the thing he actually wanted.

And this was someone who consider himself a senior programmer.

magic_lobster_party,

Ensuring all developers can continue putting out things quickly is equally (if not more) important.

Raytracing is only available in the garage area of the game

That’s one interesting way of implementing RT. Strange that they list RT specs first if it’s not really impacting gameplay.

magic_lobster_party,

Problem with games as a service is that it’s really difficult to make a working model out of it. Many have tried, but few have succeeded. Even SE failed with Avengers. For every Fortnite there are also multiple failures. It’s a risky model.

Those few who succeed usually make these large sums of money.

magic_lobster_party,

Too bad Emacs doesn’t have a good text editor.

magic_lobster_party,

My company was quick with banning ChatGPT. We’re handling a lot of sensitive customer information, and it wouldn’t be very appreciated if we just gave it all away to some random company.

I hope that open source models catch up soon enough so we can spin up our own AWS instance.

magic_lobster_party,

Why? They’re probably making way more money this way anyways.

magic_lobster_party,

But what they learn through this experience could benefit their future work.

What they learned is that they don’t need Xbox to have one of the most successful games of the year.

magic_lobster_party,

BG3 should have split screen coop on PS5.

The problem with Xbox is that Larian couldn’t manage to make it work on Series S due to memory constraints. It takes a huge toll on memory if you allow two characters be on two parts of the map at the same time.

Microsoft wants Series S to be a cheaper 1080p option of Series X. Any game Series X can play should Series S also play with lower visual fidelity. This turns out to be a flawed dream by the looks of it.

I don’t think Microsoft will abandon this cheap 1080p console vision just because of one game, but they might need to if more games start to drop Xbox support due to this.

magic_lobster_party,

It’s hard to communicate it to the consumer. Far from everybody follows this discourse surrounding the game. Maybe someone buys BG3 just for the split screen capability, just to disappointingly find out that the Xbox version doesn’t support it. Especially when they already have paid full price for the game.

magic_lobster_party,

Problem is that it can turn into a slippery slope. Where should MS draw the line if they start to allow Series X exclusive content? Can developers cut entire game modes from the S version if they just ask kindly enough? Or maybe ignore the S version completely? The risk is that developers are going to abuse this opportunity.

MS wants people to see the Series S as a viable purchase. Why should you buy it when you won’t be able to play the next big release in full?

magic_lobster_party,

Split screen might be difficult for Series S due to memory constraints. Keep in mind that all assets both players are seeing must be loaded in memory simultaneously. This includes textures, models and animations. These assets are normally not loaded into the memory unless they’re visible by the camera. This becomes problematic if there are two cameras facing different parts of the map at the same time. Then you potentially need to double the memory requirements, which the Series S might not have.

magic_lobster_party,

That will just betray all the customers who bought Series S. Will they upgrade to a Series X to play the next big thing? No, they will probably just buy a PS5 instead. Why should they continue to stay loyal with MS?

magic_lobster_party,

You’re confusing AI with AGI. AGI is the ultimate goal of AI research. AI are all the steps along the way. Step by step, AI researchers figure out how to make computers replicate human capabilities. AGI is when we have an AI that has basically replicated all human capabilities. That’s when it’s no longer bounded by a particular problem.

You can use the more specific terms “weak AI” or “narrow AI” if you prefer.

Generative AI is just another step in the way. Just like how the emergence of deep learning was one step some years ago. It can clearly produce stuff that previously only humans could make, which in this case is convincing texts and pictures from arbitrary prompts. It’s accurate to call it AI (or weak AI).

magic_lobster_party,

The problem with VR is the cost of a headset. It’s a high cost of entry. Few want to buy another expensive device unless it’s really worth it.

Generative AI has a small cost of entry for the consumer. Just log in to a site, maybe pay some subscription fee, and start prompting. I’ve used it to quickly generate Excel formulas for example. Instead of looking for a particular answer in some website with SEO garbage I can get an answer immediately.

magic_lobster_party,

It’s a bit of an everything app. You can use it for payments for example.

Looking for games with strong female leads for my daughter (even just to watch as I play). Came across this link, but they're a bit age-inappropriate. Any suggestions from the community? (gameranx.com)

Edit: Daughter is only 5 so she’s unlikely to play much but she watches me and as long as it’s not too violent, it should be fine

magic_lobster_party,

A Hat in Time. It’s like those classic platformers for N64.

Edit: Rayman Legends might be a stretch, but if I’m not mistaken you can play most of the game (maybe all?) with Barbara.

magic_lobster_party,

Shovel Knight allows you to gender swap all major characters.

Wouldn’t say “dumb”. More like borderline senile elderly. Elderly people usually have large saving accounts, so there’s a lot to win for these scammers if they find someone who’s decently senile.

magic_lobster_party,

Sudo is short for “super do”, which means “do this at super speed”

magic_lobster_party,

I usually go with zip. It’s supported by default on all sane operating systems. There’s no reason to overly complicate things for other people. No one is going to be impressed by your choice of compression format.

magic_lobster_party,

Which is not an issue in 99% of the cases

magic_lobster_party,

If they choose to use some obscure Unix system as their daily driver then it’s on them. Unless they specifically request tar or some other format, go with the safest option, which is zip.

magic_lobster_party,

I’ve said that.

Was going to check a file another student sent me. I was at school, so I used one of the school computers. These computers are locked down, which means I can’t install whatever I want on them. Needless to say, I was unable to open the 7z file the other student sent me until I got home. So much time wasted.

magic_lobster_party,

Adding to what the other person said.

The main purpose of it is if you’re sharing the computer with someone else. You don’t need to worry about your kink searches showing up in the search history (or whatever you don’t want other people in the household to know about).

magic_lobster_party,

Bitcoin has high fees if you’re moving Bitcoin between wallets within the blockchain. You don’t pay fees if you’re moving Bitcoin between wallets within the exchange, because those transactions aren’t registered to the blockchain. It’s essentially just registered into the exchanges internal spreadsheets.

magic_lobster_party,

I guess the purpose of this PayPal coin is the same as Tether: to circumvent some of the regulations that comes when trading cryptocurrencies with real USD.

They will probably require some KYC verification process before you can buy the coin, so PayPal will know exactly who you are. It’s up to PayPal to reveal your registered name or not.

I also doubt they will allow to send the coin to people outside US. They explicitly state in the page that it’s for US customers only.

magic_lobster_party,

JavaScript is much more mature. It has a lot of established tools and frameworks aiding the developer. JavaScript frontend developers are also easier to recruit. You will just make everything harder for yourself by adopting WASM.
