Im already finding it a hard sell for my News+ sub. This price increase may just lead me to cancel at this point.

You get access to news from publishers like WSJ, Wired, LA Times, National Review, as well as magazines from many others. You also get access to news audio which is not bad.

It won’t just be electric cars, it’ll be all new model cars from manufacturing companies. At least until ICE is phased out.

OpenAI's head of trust and safety Dave Willner steps down | TechCrunch (techcrunch.com)

A significant personnel change is afoot at OpenAI, the artificial intelligence juggernaut that has nearly single-handedly inserted the concept of generative AI into global public discourse with the launch of ChatGPT. Dave Willner, an industry veteran who was the startup’s head of trust and safety, announced in a post on...

DeSantis calls for state investment manager to consider action against Bud Light's parent company (edition.cnn.com)

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is urging the state’s pension fund manager to consider legal action against Bud Light’s parent company amid conservative backlash to the beermaker’s recent marketing efforts, the latest attempt by the Republican presidential candidate to inject himself and the state he runs into the country’s...

His culture war bullshit is getting so stale (and borderline cringe) at this point. Don’t want a guy chasing companies and institutions for being “woke” and not do shit for their people as president.

He’s not wrong. There’s a lot of instability in the world right now. And it’s times of instability that we tend to see the miscalculations that lead to major power conflict.

As of late, I feel like we are just a few simple mistakes and a series of events away from large scale conflict.

CCC, WPA, or any semblance of the alphabet soup of new deal programs focused on improving the infrastructure and getting people to work is something I believe this country desperately needs. For all the reasons you stated but another important factor; it can help Americans get a new found sense of pride in their country and a sense of community.

I remember reading about how the new deal programs boosted pride among Americans who took part in these programs. A sense of pride that was needed to fight WWII.

While a modern version of this would be amazing, I can’t help but show the same skepticism that has been said here in regards to corruption and issues that would inevitable come up. It’s a totally different political landscape than it was in 1933.

The anti-Biden ad released by the GOP a few weeks ago was much more easier to tell was AI generated. This one is much more subtle that I wouldn’t have known used AI voice generation if it weren’t for the article. Yes it was simply a post on social media, but having it voiced over adds much more to reach its audience imo.

This is concerning.

Edit: anti-Biden ad

Christopher Nolan wants Oppenheimer to be a warning for Silicon Valley (www.theverge.com)

Around the time J. Robert Oppenheimer learned that Hiroshima had been struck (alongside everyone else in the world) he began to have profound regrets about his role in the creation of that bomb. At one point when meeting President Truman Oppenheimer wept and expressed that regret. Truman called him a crybaby and said he never...

Very curious to see the price this launches at.

Over/under 60K?

holo_nexus, (edited )
@holo_nexus@kbin.social avatar

It’ll sell it’s fair share but the delayed launch is going to really hurt it it’s potential sales numbers. In the span of their initial release date and ‘24, ev pickups from Ford, Rivian, and GM have released.

They could have been one of the first and taken the hype

That Google memo about having “no moat” in AI was real — and Google’s AI boss disagrees with it (www.theverge.com)

Just a couple of months ago, a leaked memo said to be from a Google researcher cast doubt on the company’s future in AI, stating that it has “no moat” in the industry — and now, we seemingly have confirmation that it was real. In an interview with Decoder, Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google’s DeepMind, told The Verge...

holo_nexus, (edited )
@holo_nexus@kbin.social avatar

Read his quotes and it sounds like he thinks that they can continue with the closed source path, despite of the memo (which I believed had plenty of important points).

You think we’ll see them make a fully open source model?

holo_nexus,
@holo_nexus@kbin.social avatar

Yea I don’t think they will either which is a shame it would’ve been interesting to see what they could have done with an open source model combined with the insane resources they have and 3rd party.

Gizmodo’s staff isn’t happy about G/O Media’s AI-generated content (www.theverge.com)

Do you find that you're on the fed more than you were on r/ just because you're really really excited to watch your favorite communities become more active?

I do, but as more people join I’m also feeling a little republican - i got my spot and this is good; everyone on the outside can go fuck off now. I don’t want it to get so big that it’s what we left. No intended disrespect or lack of acknowledgment to those who were here before.

holo_nexus,
@holo_nexus@kbin.social avatar

Yes, it has been fun adding and contributing to the small and bigger communities on here alike. Not to mention that there have been more constructive conversations as well.

I differ with your view in that I’m looking forward to having more people join and seeing these communities grow. As of now, the platform is still pretty niche (which is nice) but the fediverse can be built in a flexible way to give users the power in what they want to see and block.

Looks like accessing twitter accounts directly without an account still requires login. But looks like individual tweets are now accessible without an account.

Who knows honestly, twitter has been a mess to say the least.

holo_nexus,
@holo_nexus@kbin.social avatar

Now that you pointed it out, I have no clue how people/businesses who rely on twitter can continue to do so with the utter uncertainty the platform runs on daily.

I know they’ve been leaving in droves, but it has been insane how it has been run these past few months.

Because the rulings the current court are making are not what the majority of us want.

The job of SCOTUS is not to rule based on what the “majority” of people want. It’s to check the constitutionality of the policies and laws passed by the other 2 branches.

holo_nexus, (edited )
@holo_nexus@kbin.social avatar

To start, your confusing the cake case with the one from last week that had to do with a website for gay marriage (cake happened years ago). In both, they ruled that the 1st amendment rights of free expression and freedom of religion supersedes state nondiscriminatory laws.

For the record, I’m completely opposed to the rulings. But what you claim to be “pure fantasy of religion” is not something a large portion of the population would not agree with as they believe is some sort of faith, and the right to believe that faith is something that is protected by our 1st amendment whether you like it or not. I mean, it’s something that makes our country great is it not?

In regards to affirmative action, it was bound to be overturned due to its own discriminatory nature. Are there massive discrepancies in access to quality education, funding, wealth, and opportunities on a socio-economic and racial basis that is widespread all throughout society? Of course! But affirmative action is NOT the answer or solution to this, again due to its own discriminatory nature (and therefore, unconstitutional).

The whole bribery thing with Roberts and Thomas is a separate issue, and there needs to be severe consequences for such actions. Does SCOTUS have massive problems currently? Yes! But the faster we realize that it was meant to be a non-partisan institution with the sole purpose of interpreting the constitution and not ruling based on what the majority of people want, the faster we’ll realize that the institution is currently broken and we need to be very careful with what solutions are implemented (and no, packing the court is not a solution. It’ll make the whole situation exponentially worse)

Twitter's API keeps breaking, even for developers paying $42,000 (mashable.com)

Twitter's API issues have frustrated developers in each of Twitter's new API access tiers. Those with Basic or Pro plans — paying $100 and $5000 a month for API access, respectively — have experienced unannounced changes to their plans, numerous bugs, and often receive zero customer support. And developers shelling out for...

New, Conservative Push To Weaken Child Labor Protections Is Gaining Steam (talkingpointsmemo.com)

A movement to weaken American child labor protections at the state level began in 2022. By June 2023, Arkansas, Iowa, New Jersey and New Hampshire had enacted this kind of legislation, and lawmakers in at least another eight states had introduced similar measures.

We shouldn’t be shocked when the education levels of these states (literacy, math, writing, etc) starts to decrease in the near future. It’s not like these politicians, companies, people care sadly, but with the less time teenagers are going to have for studies, extracurricular, and usual teenage things, we can definitely expect to see even further decrease in grades and proficiency levels.

Grades are one thing, but the mental toll and stress a lot teenagers face due to not being have to have an effective school/work/life balance is insane. I have seen a further decrease on these students mental health since the pandemic started (especially now with inflation impact lower SES families) since alot of them have to work to provide for the family as well.

With generative AI and it’s harmful impacts being the hot topic right now, I can see how the EU regulations are garnering so much attention and support right now. Even if they do pass the regulations, it’s still going to be important that other countries (US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, etc) get on board or I can easily see the EU being left behind in this space. Like you said, some sort of protections by the EU are going to be important.

With that said, I just don’t see how these regulations remain long term if there isn’t buy in from other countries.

holo_nexus,
@holo_nexus@kbin.social avatar

While GDPR is possible to enforce (and thrive) while the majority of the world doesn’t, I find it very difficult for its potential AI industry to do the same if the current draft resolution is passed and unchanged.

It’s still to early to tell if the current draft remains the same and is passed in the EU; but if it does, I think many companies will be content with pulling their business from the EU altogether. These regulations can severely limit the data moat that EU based AI companies can have if they want to create their own competitors, already leaving them in a big disadvantage against other companies who are trained in massive amounts of data that the EU may potentially say cannot be accessed.

Btw, I fully lean on the side of the EU with regulated what data AI companies can access and compensation for creatives. Like you said, AI can eat its own tail, which we already see happening with reports of LLMs being trained with other AI generated content.

“Capitalism on the way up, socialism on the way down”

Does anybody feel like the quality of reddit has already dropped massively? (kbin.social)

I see a lot of comments from bootlickers on how the protests are dumb and stupid and dont work and engagement metrics are still holding but the quality of posts and comments has noticeably depreciated imo. So much so that whenever I visit the site Im actually shocked at how bad it is.

holo_nexus,
@holo_nexus@kbin.social avatar

Havnt checked so honestly wouldn’t know. Now that I think of it, it’s kind of crazy that Kbin replaced it so easily for me and I am on it far less (which is a good thing tbh).

It’s also testament to how good the experience here has been so far. And how crap reddits response as been.
