hitmyspot,

Raising interest rates to fight inflation works by reducing demand. Jobs get lost so people have less money. So they spend less, so prices drop to be more competitive.

Only poorer people obviously. Rich people are less affected, but still pay more in interest. The increased number of unemployed people means competition for jobs is higher so workers are cheaper to pay, increasing profits again.

High inflation is bad for everyone, but particularly so for the poorer, too. However, measures to fight it should be spread across society. Instead blunt tools like interest rate rises disproportionately affect the poor. They should be combined with higher taxes on business and high earners and high net worth individuals. Worldwide we only really do the first. I wonder who decides?

hitmyspot,

Biodegradable wet wipes are a thing. They are a bit rougher but not bad.

Biodegradable nappies/diapers exist too but they are awful. Similar to try cloth or reusable (with a changeable lining). Awful.

hitmyspot,

I’m sorry, your comment has not been posted. This thread is closed as it has been marked as [SOLVED]

hitmyspot,

I don’t know if it’s related, but my tv does not load the plex app correctly. It stalled on loading and gave the option to restart. Then restart with data cleared. I did so. Got to Home Screen eventually, but when I log in, it is now blank.

hitmyspot,

Yes, but larger variety of active communities is better overall.

hitmyspot,

Is this where the name street er came for the manager in the other two?

hitmyspot,

Having often run into problems where apps won’t download with current versions of android, is there a maxSDK too?

hitmyspot,

I get that it’s up to the devs to authorise it. It just seems odd that they seem to require manual review for some apps and others is just a minimum. Perhaps it’s a setting.

hitmyspot,

Isn’t that just a version of playing it straight, an actual show from the uk, copied in America too.

hitmyspot,

2 years means I wouldn’t buy a new version of it but it’s quite common to buy a phone for up to a year before a replacement model arrives, so potentially this phone is just over a year old.

Not only that, but usually it gets security updates longer than that. Personally, I would expect a phone to last 3 years minim and be usable for 5.

hitmyspot,

Ireland is still an option for UK citizens. If you have skills, nz, Australia or Canada are welcoming too.

It’s not all bad.

hitmyspot,

I don’t think anyone has a problem with Jews playing gentiles or gentiles playing Jews. It’s that putting on a nose prosthetic is seen as trying to match a caricature that was used in antisemiric propaganda. The prosthetic appears to be more pronounced than the real nose he had, so it seems an odd choice. However, it seems earnest in seeking to portray him and the family are fine with it. I think it’s a mountain made out of a molehill, but I understand why the question is being asked.

hitmyspot,

It exists. It’s called android! Honestly though, that’s why Google developed it. They wanted to maintain control and stay as the primary Internet portal for mobile users. Banking, messaging, gaming and productivity all passes through them.

We chat has similar in China but only because competitors were stifled. It won’t work in the west as competition for any aspect will be better for some people and anticompetitive behavior will be clamped down on even if it started to work.

hitmyspot,

You mean all the messaging?

hitmyspot,

It’s not the same. It’s Elon thinking it can be with an app, but it can’t. It’s google realising over 10 years ago that to have that level of control in the western markets, you need to have an entire platform, not an app. Elon can’t even get Twitter to do one thing well, let alone all the things.

hitmyspot,

The measurement of the act doesn’t change the act.

I think the difference is websites have a terms of service they expect you to follow. If you have an account you have agreed to that. TV doesn’t.

People bitching about Lemmy.world blocking piracy instances sound like spoiled teenagers with no consideration of consequences

Humans who run instances are real people who have jobs and mortgages and kids. I also like having piracy communities around to balance the greedy ass corporations trying to control media and copyright…I’m glad to know they are there if I need them or feel like screwing around with it. I just wonder if the people ranting all...

hitmyspot,

They probably could but if they do so without cause, then likely they will lose users and have others defederate from them, too.

I think when it’s easier to migrate accounts between instances, were more likely to see more movement. I had an account on Lemmy.workd and this one. I was hesitant to abandon the world one as I’d already curated blocks and subscribes. It felt like starting over, doing so again elsewhere.

There are now tools to automate but it’s not as simple as it should and likely will be and those tools aren’t baked in.

I imagine that if that instance is flooded with new users and continues to grow, niche communities may become even more attractive as irrelevant content overpowers what many users want to see. It’s also good that new users have a place like that to easily find content, even if it’s broader than what will make for a long term community with adult discussion. Both kinds are good.

The only reason I picked Lemmy world is it was one of the listed communities on the Lemmy instance list. It listed by user numbers, so it’s likely to stay there, if that website continues to be just a list of instances. The advice is to pick an instance that matches your interests, but few instances are purpose built for that. I’d want to trial Lemmy as a new user before doing that level of research.

hitmyspot,

Logging in makes it easier for them to track you across devices and apps. Do you mean a burner for each time you access it from a link?

hitmyspot,

Like all the vaccines do far, they will likely reduce your risk of catching it and reduce your symptoms and risk of hospitalisation or death. None have eliminated the chance to catch it or get symptoms.

That’s not to say they don’t work. That’s how they work. They make your immune system better at dealing with them. Each new variant and time increases your risk again.

hitmyspot,

Or maybe they live in an area that uses technology for better appointment systems and stock management. Let’s not try and assign beliefs to comments that aren’t about it.

hitmyspot,

The sh is silent. Unfortunately, he doesn’t hear people telling him to be quiet.

Ssshhh.

hitmyspot,

Isn’t that up to the creators though. If world is their home instance, why would they create elsewhere? Not being able to create communities would kind of defeat the purpose.

If creators want engagement, they will create on subs with more uptime. That will likely be world in the future, when hardened. The ddos attacks aren’t good for Lemmy now, but it should iron out some wrinkles in the long run for all instances. I think the world admins are doing a great job, both technically and communication wise.

hitmyspot,

The reason unions take a ballot is to decide what their members want. Then they act in unison, irrespective of whether their preferred outcome was successful. It’s perfectly normal for some members to disagree with the outcome, but still support it. I think he made foolish comments, but this is a non story.

hitmyspot,

No, you complete and utter point of sale.

hitmyspot,

Lol, it read to me that your comment was that votes won’t have consequences, rather than people not realising they would. I was thinking, ummm, you’re missing the point entirely. These are the consequences!

hitmyspot,

Omg, thanks for helping me to get the names. The arrs indeed.

hitmyspot,

It is likely very few, but enough that it made it worth their while to stop paying.

hitmyspot,

Meh, it was a fifty fifty chance anyway.

Or 47:53 if you trust the bots.

Android 14 Beta 5 (android-developers.googleblog.com)

With the official release of Android 14 only weeks away, today we’re bringing you Beta 5, the last scheduled update in our Android 14 beta program. It’s the last chance to make sure your apps are ready and provide feedback before non-beta users start getting Android 14. To enable you to test your applications on devices...

hitmyspot,

You can opt out of the beta program at any time, but doing so when there is no stable version means a wipe and reinstall.

Once the stable version is released, you can stay on it and opt out of future betas. Android 15 beta will require a new beta program. Betas for minor upgrades can be opted out.

hitmyspot,

If official software has bugs and they use reports to fix, what’s the difference with using stable beta software as a user?

It’s just early access, with slightly less polish.

hitmyspot,

Turk turkleton begs to differ.

hitmyspot,

I think that’s one of the strengths of the show. They don’t try and ram home every emotion or problem. It’s a hospital. They deal with the worst of times.

hitmyspot,

All aspects of android (pretty much) are customisable. It’s not the os that is the problem, but the developers who program on all this telemetry.

There keyboards on android are much more useful than what’s available on iOS. There is a similar issue with launchers. They, by their nature, need more access to other apps and more permissions. In most cases, that means more features, but meta and Microsoft have launchers too…

I use android and iOS. I find both good but the customisable nature of android is what drove me away from iOS.

Do you forget this piece of cinema for minesweeper comparison? en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battleship_(film)

hitmyspot,

Sonarr, radarr jellyfin, Komi, plex. There’s lists of help to make it even more convenient these days.

hitmyspot,

It could backfire when they themselves run out of new content. Charging a premium for older content seems like a poor business decision.

hitmyspot,

It doesn’t even have apps for most tvs or devices. Complete joke.

'Barbie' makes history with $1 billion at the box office (www.cnn.com)

“Barbie” has answered the billion-dollar question with a resounding “yes.” Barely three weeks into its run, writer-director Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster has raked in an astounding $1.03 billion at the global box office, according to official Warner Bros. estimates. This makes Gerwig the first solo female director with a...

hitmyspot,

It’s based off existing IP, though, so not as fresh as we would like. This is more likely to lead the studio execs to think they can mine kids toys for content, rather than think writing is important.

What are your thoughts on restricting children’s access to pornography online?

There are a lot of GOP-controller legislatures in the USA pushing through so-called “child protection” laws, but there’s a toll in the form of impacting people’s rights and data privacy. Most of these bills involve requiring adults to upload a copy of their photo ID.

hitmyspot,

All politiicans should be listened to with scepticism, but the Republicans have gone to full on lies, alternative truths, fraud, grifting and fascism. It’s not a both sides issue.

hitmyspot,

I think the point is that usually there is a gaggle of hangers on, that think they can avoid being thrown under the bus. That group is shrinking.

Supporters are still supporters, but less inclined to make an effort to support. It’s a sign of waning power as the emperor’s new clothes are indeed missing.

hitmyspot,

Revolut allows you to create disposable cards on the go. And to restrict cards from ATM use or online use.

hitmyspot,

They can declare whatever they want. The ex users won’t hear or rebut.

hitmyspot,

I hope we all win. I miss Reddit. There was a more diverse range of communities that matched my interests. My list is subscribed communities here is growing but some are dead.

That will grow over time and many are. I’m finding there is increasing engagement and comments on many posts and this engagement should breed more engagement.

hitmyspot,

Looking at the list, less a catch more a difference of ethos. Higher taxes for better public services and more even wealth distribution for social cohesion.

Many are less diverse than the USA, which brings pros and cons too.

hitmyspot,

While you are correct, your tone is quite dismissive and unwelcoming. If it’s to be a replacement, it’s reliability is relevant. On most of the update posts ive seen, users are generally appreciative of the work done.

hitmyspot,

I don’t disagree, but discussing reliability and access shouldn’t be met with suggestions to leave the community.

It may be entitled to expect uptime for a volunteer service but it’s also entitled of the project as a whole to expect users if the service is not usable.

I’ve had good reliability. My home instance advises when updated are planned and are normally for minutes. The timeline is generally rough estimates, with the caveat that the admin is doing it outside their usual work hours. The users thank them for the update and take an interest.

hitmyspot,

We all will, by having a worthy president.
