highduc,

Or, you know, Israel is a genocidal terrorist state and it’s been doing this sorta shit for decades.

highduc,

EU unblocked 10 billion euro in funds for Hungary.
It’s such bullshit how they portray this as if it wasn’t quid pro quo.
Good for Orban for blackmailing the shit out of them. Fucking cowards can’t even admit to the truth with this “walked out of the room” bullshit.

Poll shows Palestinians back Oct. 7 attack on Israel, support for Hamas rises (www.reuters.com)

Almost three in four Palestinians believe the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israel was correct, and the ensuing Gaza war has lifted support for the Islamist group both there and in the West Bank, a survey from a respected Palestinian polling institute found.

highduc,

So Israel is a hell hole?

highduc,

Guix ftw!

highduc,

I hope Valve will make the Index VR work again after breaking it with the 2.x updates in October :')

highduc,

The hate for China is really dumb but people are too brainwashed to understand anything beyond “China bad”.

Valve needs to step up on Anti-Cheat

So yeah, I want to discuss or point out why I think Valve needs to fix Anti-Cheat issues. They have VAC but apparently its doing jackshit, be it Counter Strike 2 (any previous iterations) or something like Hunt: Showdown the prevalence of cheating players is non deniable. For me personally it has come to a point that I am not...

highduc,

Only Valve has the motivation and means…

I think they have the means but not the motivation. I can think of only 2 reasons why the state of anti-cheat is the way it is:

  1. They don’t want to spend money to fix it
  2. They don’t want to ban paying customers
highduc,

Personally I liked both Horizon and RDR2 but I find it stupid that people are downvoting you for just voicing your opinion.

highduc, (edited )

It’s not all “purists” and “tribalism”, Manjaro actually has issues. Besides the well known certificate issues and older packages, I have the following anecdote which made me really dislike it.

A friend has Manjaro and one day his nvidia drivers stopped working after an update. I helped troubleshoot over the phone, while looking over the wiki. For nvidia drivers they have their own wrapper around pacman.

Turns out there’s a different nvidia driver for each kernel version. Already a stupid design. So unlike arch where there’s 1 kernel package (the latest the distro offers) and 1 matching nvidia driver, Manjaro has dozens…

The wiki never mentions how to install or update the drivers manually with pacman or anything like that. It pushes their own tool, a stupid wrapper around pacman, which is supposed to manage this for you.

In my friend’s case, the tool failed. It was trying to run pacman but there was a conflict issue. But the tool didn’t show the pacman output, so we couldn’t figure out what the tool is trying to do, and why it doesn’t work. We tried removing the tool and re-installing, and all kinds of messing around with it. It failed to install the drivers, it failed to remove the drivers, it kept failing whatever we tried.

Eventually we figured out the naming convention they used for the packages (again not mentioned in the wiki), and manage to install the correct kernel - driver pair manually, using pacman.

Tl;dr: poor design, bad documentation, and they push their own crappy tools which hinder instead of helping

highduc,

I know that these packages are “linked”, and for every kernel update you need a new nvidia driver, I don’t understand though why they keep so many kernel versions in the repo (and their respective nvidia drivers ofc). Just makes things confusing, I assume people generally want the latest kernel the distro has to offer, or if they want something else it’s a different kernel “flavor” like lts, zen, rt, etc.

highduc,

I know you need a new nvidia driver every time the kernel updates, but why keep 50 kernel versions? My beef was them offering so many (outdated) versions instead of keeping the latest one which would make things very simple for users (imo).

highduc,

and ofc console exclusive…

highduc,

They already sanctioned the shit out of Russia and that doesn’t appear to be working (I saw an article earlier about how its domestic industry is doing quite well), and already sent a lot of weapons and equipment.

Russia has fortified its positions and I doubt the EU or the US want to put men on the ground, so I don’t think there’s much they can do?!

highduc,

I should be sleeping right now…
I’ve been trying to adjust my sleep schedule so I go to bead earlier so I can get up at around 9 without being uselessly tired. Haven’t managed yet but I hope to get there slowly.

highduc,

I need to move to France.

highduc,

That looks like it would make a nice racing circuit.

highduc, (edited )

Was. They didn’t like what they found though.

highduc,

Yeah I think that’s an issue in Europe and the rest of the world. Personally I’d like to see successful European companies, but not monstrous unregulated lobbying corporations like in the US. Hopefully EU legislation will level the playing field by making the corpos abide by fair legislation, but I don’t know if that’s gonna help in all instances, and we all know how legislation is always lagging behind by at least 10-20 years.

highduc,

Nice! Hope they fix the bug where opening a new tab with the MMB freezes the whole browser!

highduc,

I think that’s a feature. I find “gaming” laptops with all the red stripes, rgb, stupid angles everywhere, etc. to look very cringe.
If anything it incentivizes people to buy a separate “work” laptop (for those who might need to buy one themselves) because you can’t show up with that thing at a professional meeting or something like that because it looks ridiculous, juvenile, and in bad taste.

highduc,

Does anyone know of a way to make this work with Jellyfin?

highduc,

Is that the right link? Ublock is warning me it might be malicious.

highduc,

I think the language is harder but more powerful than Nix’s.
Imo a better manual and examples would help a lot.
I’d say one of the biggest issues is the one with proprietary drivers - you can’t really find examples and guides on how to get drivers working because it’s kept hush-hush, and to install them yourself requires knowledge on how to set things up, knowledge which beginner users don’t have ofc.
I’m a big fan of Guix and Guile but atm I couldn’t switch over due to this.

highduc,

Shame. I thought the teams had learned to manage plank wear by now. I don’t even know the last time this was an issue.

highduc,

I think it’s much better than the usual shit they do these days like “You won’t believe what bla bla bs”… At least it tells you what the article is about and you can decide if you want to learn more about that or not.

highduc,

The trade war US and EU are pushing for seems like a stupid attempt to stop China from developing.
It’s very petty of them because they can’t compete fairly and have to resort to such BS, and I don’t think it’s going to work.

highduc,

I was talking about trade restrictions they put on chips, EVs, etc., not the defense industry.

highduc,

Took BBC a long while to aknowledge this.

highduc,

Very small update. I’m keeping an eye out for Danger Zone if they bring it back. Also hope they’ll enable demos again so stat sites like leetify work.

highduc,

Can’t believe it. And so “sudden” - though not really, they did give months of warning in advance, but I still wasn’t expecting it. My account is from October 2008 :)

It’s not a perfect tracker. Even this week I was mildly frustrated with a torrent that wasn’t seeded much, but it was good enough for me not to bother with many accounts anywhere else.

Don’t know where to go on next. Please leave suggestions if you know anybody taking in refugees :)

highduc, (edited )

Where’d you get that Russia did it? There was an article going around some time ago that Ukraine special ops (or some sort of tactical strike team, not good with these military terms) did it. That does make sense, why would Russia destroy their own pipeline? They were still hoping Germany would change its mind under economic pressure. With it destroyed no chance of selling to Germans any time soon since it’s now phisically impossible.

Edit: found it washingtonpost.com/…/nord-stream-pipeline-explosi…Edit2: my bad. different pipes

highduc,

Didn’t realize. Ty for clarifying.

highduc,

How is this calculated? I live in Romania and I don’t think it’s so bad (having lived and worked and visited other countries).

highduc,

Regarding the Android bit, it’s so cancerous because everything is locked down and users have no control over the OS. They don’t have admin rights on their own device. Nothing to do with Linux, that’s jus the kernel. Android + GNU utils & root access would be completely different.
People shit on the GNU/Linux meme, but Android actually proves that just the Linux kernel can be put in an OS that’s just as hostile to the user as anything proprietary.

highduc,

Wasn’t expecting it TBH, they seemed pretty reluctant from what I’ve read so far. Let’s see how it pans out.
Edit: but wait, it seems it’s not a done deal and still needs to be approved by the teams and the CEO …

highduc,

If you’re considering buying one you might want to take into account that they removed the headphone jack so they can sell their own wireless buds and headphones.

highduc,

Yeah I think so too

highduc,

Doesn’t crash it for me, also on 0.0.46 :(

highduc,

Love Bill Burr. Hope it’s gonna be good.

highduc,

I saw the news that Microsoft is eying to buy them. That’d be a tragedy and we’d say goodbye to such contributions.

highduc,

I’m worried that Gaben isn’t immortal and he’ll eventually die/retire/sell etc, and the people in his footsteps won’t share his vision. Throughout history this has been an often repeated story.

(Partial rant) Why are gaming communities for multiplayer games so often filled with toxicity? Why aren't game developers doing more to stop this?

There are plenty of multiplayer games I adore. However, it seems like every community has these “brain dead”, patronizing, or out right toxic elements that are just nasty. I’d rather debate politics than make suggestions in some gaming communities because the responses are just so … annoying....

highduc,

For a long time I asked myself the same question. Never found a very satisfying answer. In the meantime I stopped playing Dota 2 (which often has griefers) and Battlefield (which often has cheaters) so I’m not so troubled by this issue anymore.
I think devs just don’t care and leave dealing with these kinda folks up to the players just because it’s the status quo and nobody pushes them to do anything about it.

highduc,

I get what you’re saying. When I was a kid playing some Red Alert or C&C game with a friend we’d be censored when saying “cum?” - which means “how?” in our language. I thought that was stupid as shit. I still do now for the most part. It’s hard to have a conversation when everyday words are censored (and I was too young to know the meaning in english).
A more relatable example: If a group of friends of a particular minority want to play with each other and call each other names (that would be offensive otherwise) that may be in good fun and censoring that would be stupid and ruin the fun.

BUT

If somebody is being harassed and targeted for being black or asian or a girl or whatever, that’s way different. I think we’ve all seen it happen quite often and it sucks and it often goes on for quite a lot - some of these games can last for up to 90 minutes AND they punish you if you leave early! So having to endure all that abuse certainly sucks and that sort of behavior should be punishable so that people don’t become punching bags for others to vent their frustration. In a lot of cases these folks are kids or young adults.

I think companies could deal with that but they choose not to out of convenience (having to implement some sort of moderation could get expensive and to do it properly you need to get some human eyes involved to decide on the matter), and fear that they might lose a paying customer (in case they ban an abusive player for example).

highduc,

I preffer Matrix because it’s FOSS and no paid BS like Nitro. I expect (and sorta hope for) Discord to go through waves of enshittification and push users away.

highduc,

Afaik (from a union leader in my country) farmers are saying they can’t compete with Ukrainian grain because everything from the seeds, fertilizer, pesticides and even the diesel they use is highly subsidized by either the US or the EU and local farmers can’t compete and it’s driving them to starvation and suicide.

highduc,

Yeah but what he’s saying is that even with the subsidies they get they’re unable to sell at a profit, and it’s all to do with much cheaper grain coming from Ukraine. If you choose to believe this or not that’s up to you, I’m just relaying the message because I haven’t seen this being talked about (and ofc I personally tend to believe him). The country in question is Romania, and according to him it’s the subsidies they get, the pesticide and fertilizers they’re allowed to use, are all crap compared to other European countries whose politicians negotiated much better deals for their farmers than our so called “leaders”.
My source is this youtube interview www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m41LZVjulA&t - but unfortunately it’s in Romanian and doesn’t have subtitles.
